Mike S I think just showing us an image of the cable doesn't qualify this video as a "how to tether video" . I can show you a picture of some guys playing soccer and do a close up on the ball and that doesn't qualify as a how to video

Tony. Would it be good idea to update this video as new wifi cards have improved a great deal, and tethering with a cable can be a pain in the neck .It is very easy to trip over the tether cable and pull out your connection that might cost a great deal to repair your equipment. I would really like someone to make a video showing new ways to connect the camera to a laptop without using the cable method. Without using the hot shoe as my godox trigger sits on this to control the studio lights

Tony, I have been following your amazing video pretty closely, I greatly learn from these videos and thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge pretty liberally. My question is tethering is all great when indoors, what would you recommend for outdoors when shooting in different environments, climate conditions , at least I am unable to judge the clarity of the image pretty accurately irrespective how much I zoom, that too with my reading glasses on the Camera LCD let alone the view finder. How can tethering work in outdoors ?

I am just getting started learning to Tether my camera to a laptop. I have a 5Ds as well and found your video very helpful. I purchased the manfrotto 183 stand but was unable to stabilize it using a light stand . I was able to use it with my tripod. I use a tripod for my camera work so it cannot be dedicated to the 183. Is there an extra add on that I can buy to make the light stand more stable?

Very nice setup you got there. Side note for the probably very small amount of people who are both into Linux and photography: I've had good results with Darktable and tethering my Canon. As long as your camera is supported by the libgphoto2 library it should work if I'm not mistaken. Probably not something you'd use if you earn your living with photography, but for me as a hobbyist it has yielded good results and allowed me to combine two of my interests (plus I don't need to set up a Windows install just for photography stuff).

Thanks for sharing your tethering gears Tony :) Can you throw some light on how you transfer wirelessly from the studio computer (alienware) to your power horse desktop in downstairs.Any software in particular? Does this update every picture you take to the other desktop ? . Also is there any wireless gear to add to the camera to transfer files wirelessly instead of a USB cable ? , which could help both camera and computer to be more mobile in the studio.

I recently attended a seminar on tethering sponsored by Tether Tools. They compared Lightroom with the On1 Photo RAW 2018.5 software. The On1 beat the pants off Lightroom in speed. One thing that increased the speed of Lightroom was adding a Tether Tools booster inline between the camera and the computer. However, Lightroom still lagged far behind On1 in speed....

Thanks for the video - I'm curious about the dual Capture One and Lightroom workflow - the processing algorithms are (in my experience) quite different between the two programs (I use C1 on location, but LR to manage everything at home). Do you export TIFFs from C1 to lock in the 'look' you have on your screen as you shoot, or are you just copying over the unedited CR2 files and starting from scratch in LR?

Having watched your video about why I don't need ND filters, I tried blending some images in Ps CS6. About 170. The i5 processor wasn't too overtaxed at 25% utilisation, but I saw my SSD peak at just over 1gBytes per second. I don't think an i7 is needed. Capture One can used GPUs for processing, it's worth ensuring that you have one that's supported.

11:10 I have the same problem here but use powerline ethernet adaptors. They just plug into the wall at any points in the house and use your power cables to create a wired network connection. It's the only thing that gives me 100% up time as WiFi occasionally drops out in my loft.

I am seriously looking into capturing my landscapes tethered to a laptop using Lightroom. I don't actually need the raw files on my laptop since I only want to have a bigger preview for focus, framing etc.. Is there a way I can only change my live view to another monitor than the one on the back of the camera while still capturing the files to the SD card?

@m0rph3us100

+YuriFineart I use a tablet or a laptop tethered to my DSLR while outdoors capturing landscapes. 1. Laptop: I use ControlMyNikon software installed on the laptop, im sure Canon may have a similar option, I use ControlMyNikon because it has a lot more control over Nikon's proprietary software. ControlMyNikon has liveview, full control over your DSLR settings, shutter speed etc. Automated focus stacking, HDR, Timelapse etc... its a great piece of software. You can also choose to store images on camera only, computer only or both. 2. Tablet: for this option I use a 10.1" tablet (with USB Host capability) this is important. And an OTG (On the Go) cable, this cable connects into the micro USB port on the tablet and on the other end it had a female full-size USB port. Connect your DSLR cable into this port. The software I use on the tablet (Andriod by the way) is "DSLR Dashboard" or "Helicon Remote". I find these apps are pretty good and again give me full control over my DSLR with liveview etc... I hope this helps.
@YuriFineart

mr. morpheus thank you very much for your time! I really just need a bigger preview of the landscape though, i don't really care about controlls or saving the files to the device. Ideal would be an affordable 10 inch portable monitor or some way to turn a table in just an HDMI monitor without any apps but i suppose that's difficult but i think I'm gonna try out some of these apps you've listed! thank you so much for your time again!
@m0rph3us100
@m0rph3us100 8 жыл бұрын
+YuriFineart Youre welcome, how do you plan to power the portable monitor outdoors ? is that your goal ? It may actually be cheaper to purchase an android tablet, simply to use as a larger viewfinder with a half decent screen. I know BQ sell full HD res 10.1" tablets for as little as 200Euros, Im confident that is a fair bit cheaper than purchasing a USB powered, or battery powered PC monitor. The Android apps that I use are free. Personally I prefer Helix Remote app. If you have the luxury of a smartphone with IR on it i can suggest a great way of remote triggering your DSLR :-)
@YuriFineart
@YuriFineart 8 жыл бұрын
mr. morpheus yea i think a tablet is the best, cheapest and most efficient way to go, I really just need a bigger preview to compose, I don't really care about color accuracy or any of that. I was looking at portable monitors with a battery bank and the aputure 7 inch screen but I really think i'm gonna go with a 10 inch tablet... thank you very much for your time again!

I never thought of doing a cart like that with a small form factor computer and a good, yet "small" monitor (funny how 24" monitor used to be considered big). Looks like when I go visit the inlaws for Christmas, I need to go help my sister in law by cleaning up her hubby's testing office for some supplies to build a new small system. I love having a brother in law that's a hardware tester :-) One question regarding Capture One. Do you find any differences in editing your raw files on it vs Lightroom?

Hi, Tony! @6:16, you mentioned that you sychronize your camera to your computer , so that it can go to your computer in your work space or editing space. I have 2 questions. Can you tell me or give a video link, that I can watch, so that I can do the same? Will the synching allow me to transfer video footage? I'm asking, because, my recording studio is upstairs and my editing space is downstairs. I'm tired of taking my camera, up and downstairs, to import media. I'm afraid that I may fall and break my camera or something. It's a waste time and I hate unplugging and replugging my camera, back and forth, to 2 different computers. I'm frustrated! Please, answer, me. Thank you!

No bad jokes intended.) I'm also more interested in wireless options because I tend to move around a lot rather than doing fixed-camera shots.

Hello Tony. How are you? I'm learning a lot from you on how to better take pictures when travelling with my family on a vacation with my D5600 Nikon. I hope you don't mind, may I ask if the tethering application in Lightroom Classic 9.2.1 which came with my Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is compatible now with Catalina 10.15.4? Last Nov 2019 I upgrade the OS of my laptop from Mojave 10.14.6 to Catalina 10.15.4 and tethering didn’t work. I had to pay Apple service USD50 to bring back the OS Mojave 10.14.6. thank you.

Dear Mr & Ms Northrup: I would like to bring your attention to ultra-wide monitors like the LG 34UM95 for tethering and image & video editing. When tethering I find that I can have on the same monitor the camera remote controls, live preview and the pictures I taken all at view at the same time. I find this very useful for macro pictures as this is what I do the most. When editing pictures, I can have multiple pictures opened at the same time on Photoshop and compare/work on them on the same screen. I find this very important as I can compare/work on my pictures on the same monitor without any variation (color, saturation etc) due to using different monitors. Also, panoramas are something else in these types of monitors. For video editing, the main advantage is the vast available workspace. Timelines can be expanded in such a way that you can do work on them without needing to expand or contract them all the time. This ultra-Wide monitors are usually available in curved format as well. These avoid you to have to move on your desk one side to the other to see things on the corner, however, they probably are not the best option for serious image editing due to the panel curvature. Anyway, just a recommendation I wanted to throw up there.

Just a mention that you can tether with Aperture 3 as well... and it's fast. Too bad there's no assurance as to its future. Hope DxO Pro develops the capability.

Tony I was hoping you had an answer for this tethering challenge. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro (upgraded), capture one 11 & Sony A7r III that I’ve been tethering with with no issues for years. Until three days ago. I cannot shoot tethered with my laptop unplugged any longer or I get an alert that says “ USB accessories disabled. Using too much power”. Like I said this has never happened before.I’m getting these tiny little glitches after updating to Catalina. So, I upgraded capture one 11 to capture one 20 thinking it might be a application issue (nope). The next step is I’ve been shooting with the same tethertools cord for three years so I ordered a new cord to see if maybe that’s it. That will get here on Wednesday. Do you have any idea what this could be?

Tony Northrup The link for your computer brought me to a computer with a yellow accent, but yours has a purple accent. For some reason, the purple accented version with i7 is much more money and has different specs. Do you have a link to the purple accented one? Thanks!

This is quite an old video. But having just found it, I am AMAZED at the number of people who don't know how to plug in the two ends of a cable. And get this, you troubled folks, not every camera has the same kind of USB port on it. And not all computers have the same kind of USB ports on them. (Which we would be evident if you even listened to what Tony says.) SO there is no way Tony could tell you "what kind of cable you need", except that, it needs to link two USB ports. So it's a USB cable, Doh!! If someone doesn't figure out they need to find a USB cable that connects THEIR computer to THEIR camera, I think they are going to get little help out of this video. And those complaints that he's not providing any information or that insulting "just a salesman not a photographer" .. .these are just so blind lame and ignorant. The guy is easily confirmed to be a highly competent photographer. And he's giving a lot of real world information about what he finds works best, and what doesn't, including what kinds of gear is best for these purposes (e.g. not just a tripod by a seriously heavy one; not just a monitor but a hgih-resolution monitor, not just a mouse but a mouse with a wheel, etc.) and showing what the advantages of tethering are. (I was hoping to find a video on wi-fi tethering. But that's a different thing.)
