Having the leash attached to the side ring saved me 2 days ago. I had a death loop, broken chicken loop, safety couldn't activate as the red steering line was wrapped around the bar and the center lines, I was being yanked out of the water and thrown 10m downwind. If the leash was attached on the spreader bar behind me, I would almost certainly not be able to release it.

We are glad to hear all went well! Be sure to advise your kite friends when you see anybody with their leash attached to the back.

I tried this. Eventually the attachment point in the harness snapped. Almost lost my kite, saved due to some friends who were quick to help recover it before it reached the bushes. This was with Ion CS Hadlow Harness, 2018 model, which I purchased new less than a year ago. While I got "warranty" (unfortunately just a refund for an already discounted price, and the shop is not in my country), I think it's not a good idea to attach the harness to something that can fail so easily. I didn't even do anything special. Just crashing unhooked tricks for the last year... I don't want to know what would happen with older harnesses.

Very important tip, appreciate it! Have a question though - since the leash is now connected to the spreader bar (or sides), will this hinder doing handle pass?

Absolutely no issue at all. Most pros ride longer leashes now and to not drag it around, they often attach it to the spreader bar and then wrap it around once or even more (for double and triple passes).

Very interesting tips, but it`s my understanding that the leash being attached to one of the front lines will make the kite (bow type for instance) collapse and fall. Maybe Karolina Winkoswska had a different setup, but in my case i would only disconect from the leash if the kite gets entangled with a moving object, like a boat or a car. Am I correct?

In the case you describe it would be correct to disconnect from your leash. But this video is not about disconnecting your leash, it is showing how to connect it properly to your harness. This is independent on where you have the leash attached on the kite side.

If you do this, make sure the loops are solid. I tried and the ring ripped right off when I let go of the bar, cutting the kite loose. Dumb mistake. I thought I'd leave this comment in case it can help someone avoid this happening.

Thanks for the tip. Alternatively you can attach most leashes on the spreader bar loop through (where you have the tension belts going through).

Same thing happened to me. And with a dedicated freestyle harness from Ion, purchased new! They don't even have the option to attach to the spreader bar (no rings).

what about board leash ?
@alwayswindykite
@alwayswindykite 10 жыл бұрын
We really do not recommend using a board leash. The board leash can be extremely dangerous in many scenarious: from wrapping around your quick release to getting hit on the head by it on a crash. If you must use it, always wear a helmet but even then, your neck is not protected and the leash can still tangle on a bad crash. It is much better and safer to practice your bodydrag so you can always return to your board.
