When I was learning English, I used to watch a video repeatedly for many days. That could help me to have all those words and structures in my long term memory. So pick up a video and then watch it every day for a week. That could be boring but the result is gonna be wonderful.

If you want to learn a language efficiently, then you need to give that language life. Every word needs to connect to sounds, images, senses, tastes, and emotions. Every bit of grammar can’t be some kind of abstract grammatical quote, needs to be something that can help you tell your story. 5-Discipline, you have to know before learning a new language 1. Make learning fun. 2. Make lots of mistakes and learn from them. 3. Don’t compare yourself with other learners. 4. Be Patient (Don’t say when I learn the language like a native, make it step by step). 5. Live with this language. Make a suitable method for you, there’re thousands of methods to learn a language choose a fun method. 5-Discipline, you have to practice the language every single day 1. Listen at least for 30 minutes. 2. Read a novel or news or anything you are interested in for 30 minutes. 3. Speak with yourself or a partner if you have, discuss different topics, or talk about what happened in your day before you go to sleep. 4. Learn 5 new words or sentences and repeat them everyday day, and use them in your conversations. 5. Write your personal journal every day ‘’If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his language, that goes to his heart.” Nelson Mandela Remind yourself about the benefits of learning this language, That will motivate you. Read this quote load every day ‘’Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever.’’ Don’t focus on yourself, focus on the result that you want to achieve. English is not an art to be mastered, English is just a tool to use to get results.

I speak day by day. Begin with a simple sentence. Don't care that "Oh, my grammar isn't correct.", "My accent is terrible!"... Besides, I really like reading newspaper, Quora, people's comments on KZfaq. I also like writing comment and replying comments. Surprisingly, I wasn't trying too hard to learn English but I was able to naturally say my thoughts. Finally, in my opinion, practice patiently and confidently, speak and write down your thoughts. This not only makes you feel no pressure of studying, but also an opportunity to make friends, confidently communicate with strangers. P/s: My writing skills is very bad 😆 And when I activily comment on KZfaq or something like that. It looks like I improved a lot.

My personal tips: 1- Start to read more in English. Everyday read texts that are relevant and interesting for you. Use the internet to find nice articles. 2- Read them without translating a single word on you head. Only worry about the pronunciation. The main porpouse is to learn new words and strength the ones you've already know. If you notice that you're translating in your head, stop translating and start again. This will also help you start thinking in English. 3- After you've already read the text. Get the words that you don't know in a list and look for them in a English-English dictionary. If you are a beginner it's ok to use an Eglish-(your language) dictionary, but when you become a intermediate student, use only English-English dictionary. 4- This exercise will help you to thinking in English and your reading speed and comprehension will increase a lot. This will also help you with listening, that's why you need to learn the correct words pronunciation, because once you hear that word you'll get it. 5- Start to watch KZfaq videos in English. Use subtitles IN ENGLISH until you get more advanced and confident to watch videos without them. 6- Watch videos about issues that are relevant and interesting for you and when you're listening the words don't worry about their meaning, focus on the pronunciation only. You gonna learn a lots of words throughout the context. 7-Combine reading texts and watch videos about the same subject in English. You gonna learn a lots of vocabulary and your reading, speaking, thinking, listening and comprehension skills will level up amazingly. And always remember about to not translating in your head. Just learn the words how they are pronounced and look for the meanings you don't know using an English-English dictionary. A nice online English-English dictionary is vocabulary.com, they have easy explanations with examples and you can also hear how the words are pronounced by a native speaker.

@@aminata7778 best way to memorize words is speaking and practising. If you have noone to practise with do it like Rachel told. Speak with yourself or do it like my way and choose a subject that you are interested in and do as much as comments on a youtube channel and discuss ideas and share your ideas with others. That is very good options. You will memorize the words that you will need most in your life. The commentors will be real people in the life not people for speaking. Noone makes fun of your English. Hi Rachel. Most of these ideas, I used to do them when I was learning English without even realizing, you know. Like switching the language on my phone (never switched it back and still have it in English since then), talking to myself in my head or writing down American English idioms and collocations from subtitles or downloading movie scripts from movies that I enjoyed watching. In fact, when you really enjoy learning a new language, you eagerly find different ways to practice. And if we add up time to that thing, there's no way that progress cannot occur. By the way, you look pretty much and sound like a lady who was my boss in NC and who I was lucky to meet at work and inspired me to gain more fluency. I follow you from a long time ago. The content of your videos is just awesome. Thank you

What does “most native” mean? The British used to pronounce R’s like Americans (rhotic R’s) in the 1750’s but they diverged from their own original pronunciation.

I use my smartphone in English, my computer is in English, I play games in English, watch movies and videos in English, sometimes I talk with myself in English too, but when it comes to speak or writing, I just become dumb, I struggle, make bad structures and forgot words. I usually do what I feel that is natural, but I'm not always confident about it. Pronounciation is a thing that I do poorly too, so I'm gonna see how far can I improve watching your videos, I have learned a lot already.

Hello, Rachel I very much appreciate what you are doing to help learners of English. I am from Congo which is a French speaking country, I don't do exactly everything that you've mentioned, but I practice my English every single day by listening to English news on BBC or watching CBS news on my computer and also talk with my french speaking friends who learn English and guess what? I most of the time dream in English and when I wake up I can remember exactly what I dream of.

When I started learning English I would translate each word in the sentence to my native language and I find it difficult because the translation don't match the definition of the word so what happened is I felt overwhelmed and what I did to overcome this is I started writing in English and I avoid translating it to my native language and every time I want to talk on something I would use English instead of my native language and I set a time each day where I can learn a new word to add up to my vocabulary and every time I reflect for my day I speak it in English. Right now at this time, I can say that I improved a lot in my speaking in English and this video helped me a lot. This makes me realize that I'm on the right path in learning English. For those people out there that are also learning English don't give up and always practice and believe in yourself this will take time so be patient and keep going.

Reading and watching videos and movies in english were 2 things that really helped me to stop translating. At first, I used think: "I can't get anything" and this thought was responsible for making me give up and translate, but once I decided to pretend I was understanding everything, I started to really understand and actually learn new words, phrasal verbs, etc.

@@rachelsenglish Is it really possible to be fluent in english if I just talk in my head? I'm too shy that I can't even talk in english with my family around. I'm actually just starting and motivated but whenever I get into videos or articles that says "you have to speak" that's when I feel hopeless and feel demotivated. Is it enough that I listen to podcasts, watch movies, youtube videos and I read fb posts. I write anything about anything in english using the new words I got from watching and reading and stuff. By the way, I love thinking in english, like a lot. Is it all right? Thanks 🐱

To improve my active vocabulary I started to write essays in English. But it was very difficult to find topics to write about. Trying to find a solution I started to retell the plot of my favorite book. And it worked very well! There was not a need to figure out what to write about by myself, and I was able to just focus on finding write words in my passive vocabulary and using it to gradually transfer it in an active one. If someone has similar problem, you can try this method, it’s very effective🙂

Good thing this works on every language, and it's even easier and more understandable when you're learning another one. I started to think in English like a year ago and it was such an experience. First of all, I got used to language (reading, watching etc a lot, even if I've been understanding not that much). And then, before a university conference (when we were telling some information about innovations to each other) I tried to explain my topic to myself (as if I were telling it to someone) after watching a video related to my topic. And tried to do it without translations. It was hard, but I felt that something has changed. So it helped me a lot. After a conference (where I did well, I was surprised by that fact) and little dialogues in one videogame I couldn't sleep all night because of thinking in English 🤣🤣🤣. I saw that I haven't studied for nothing, I finally saw such results. And after that it was easier to learn (use) English - talk, listen, read, etc. (Ngl I'm far from perfect and still need to speak and read a lot (havent spoken in a while) but still) And now I'll try to repeat this expepience with Japanese, that's why I rewatched the main points for thinking in target language (I knew most of it, yes, but I had to make sure I didnt miss something). Well, good luck to everyone!
