No wonder I couldn’t get it to work. When I was 8, my dad got me a little knife. I can’t tell you how many hours I practiced, throwing a knife to see if I could get it to stick in a tree! Come to find out now, when I am 68 years old. It wasn’t going to work….ever! Thanks for the lesson, Jason, we appreciate all you do. God bless.

No-spin is the only real-world way to sink a knife with accuracy and consistency. Anyone that tells you that you need to flip or spin the knife is trying to sell you a knife throwing course that will get you injured or worse. Spinning uses up too much of the kinetic energy of the throw, is wildly unpredictable, and just plain ineffective. No-spin from 5-7 feet is almost 100% effective, if you practice, as I do every single day.

My recommendation is to buy at least TWO of your favorite knives and practice throwing only one of them. That way when you break your practice knife, you still have the other one for use. I have been practicing no-spin knife throwing as a surprise move with both over hand throws and under-hand tosses. There are specific distances that these two methods produce a zero-spin point-first hit, and I wait until my target is inside of that distance window. Throwing other items such as your tire iron or a garden spade (used for digging field latrines) might work better sometimes. Be ready to improvise. Jason, how about a tutorial on selecting and throwing a stick? A full, sealed beverage can is also a rather effective hurled object--weighing between 12 and 24 ounces, these can be thrown with accuracy past 50 feet, and if your target doesn't get out of the way it'll leave a mark! If your target does watch the can coming and ducks, then you've distracted your target for a moment--use that moment! Hey--that's one good use for Bud Light!

I think the best option is to use a throwing star instead of a throwing knife. Even a simple one made of sheet metal like a can lid sharpened will work, (although it will lack weight). 3D print a carrying case or sew a little pouch for them. Throwing stars were originally designed specifically for a distraction, not really to wound/kill, so they are effective for that purpose as the point will impact even if you throw in an awkward way you didn't fully practice. A gun is best though, lol

Many years ago, I trained in knife fighting. One day, I asked my instructor to teach me how to throw it like they did on tv. His response was “why do you want to give your weapon to your enemy?” He went on with his criticism of my question, but that response stuck in my head. Needless to say, I never learned how to throw a knife effectively. I usually look like you did with that tree. 😂 Great video and God bless you and your family!

Try using hay or straw "short" bale stacked flat with the edges towards you. Make sure that the bales are baled tight and the stack is tight. This works great for starting tomahawk throwing and makes easier for sticking knives. It saves the handles of both and the knives and tomahawk won't bounce back so far. Best if stacked on lawn or dirt.

I throw from the sheath. It will increase your velocity and accuracy. Application for a sheath throw, would not be a react to contact scenario. It would be more suitable for relieving a sentry guard, or hunting. Find a leather sheath, insert the knife...this will allow you to palm the blade. Throw a regular knife, no spin . I got 4 "duct knives" Milwaukee from Home Depot. - Always use safety glasses for practice!!!! - Grab the handle. - You put your pointing finger on top of the handle, along with the knife. - Keeping your forearm vertical, throw with a long horizontal movement toward the target - chest level - making sure you break the rotational motion of the handle with your palm. - Start from a short distance, increase it as you get better. - Your danger zone is within 4 feet of your attacker. More than that - you are safe. - Position yourself 8 - 10 feet away. - You may step back, leaning on the ball of your back foot, like a boxer. Say you're throwing from 9 feet. Your arm will extend 3 feet so the knife has to only travel 6 feet within 1/5th or 1/10th of a second. He has no chance.

Actually got pretty proficient at throwing knives when I was young. Thought I'd see if I could still do it after all these years. Just for giggles,.. used a fixed blade and don't you know,.. had throw it three times before it stuck. However, afterwards I stuck it every time at ten feet. Took a minute to get the hang of it again. Also, I throw a lot harder as I want it to stick deep or hurt as much as possible. Regular throwing knives are a different matter of technique. All in all, never bring a knife to a gun fight. Keep your gun handy, loaded and clean. Practice that often! Love blades BUT,.. not my go to.

Interesting. I started throwing knives in the earl '60s and became quite adept over 3 to about 25 feet using a rotating method. I pitched newspapers onto porches for 11 years, from the age of 10 ,while often riding my Mustang bike. I had a feel of rotations over distance and am intrigued that this video shows more misses than hits with a non-rotating technique. In my 70s now, I still reckon I can launch a knife some 20' across my backyard and stick it into a 4' diameter target. Just now placing an order for a matched set to test my cocky comment.

“No spin” is still spinning, but you’re so close it doesn’t appear to be. If you’re that close (3-7 feet?, depending on knife length, your grip, etc.) the primary reason I can think of to throw your knife would be to distract the assailant and give yourself an extra second to present your gun.

Great stuff works great too but remember it expands and you have to let it dry. Pine, Spruce and Poplar are also great softwoods for targets if you want to go the wood route.

So yes, offcourse throwing with a spin is more movie’esh, but stil very much realistic, and IMO, having to go through the bigger arm movement to negate spinning telegraphs your action to much. So it’s a good technique for recreational use, but in a situation where you need to protect yourself it’s way to obvious. The Practicality of a spinning throw is that you can almost exclusively lowerarm/wrist it with more accuracy. Also the distance according to the technique/point of release you use is very important.

Love the idea of knife throwin but ya its all around a bad idea. Dont give the enemy your weapon. Ive learned it helps to know the spin vs distance ratio . Like 3 feet 1 flip by the point is one of my ratios. 4 feet by the hilt 2 flip. A quick jerk back at the end of the throw increases flips but decreases power.

The fact you even got it to stick at all, you're a better man than me. 😁 I've had about the same luck with throwing axes/tomahawks. Actually, have had more success with shuriken spikes. Made a bunch out of scrap metal. The kids and I throw them in old chunks of Dow extruded Styrofoam (after they destroyed my archery target with their homemade spears 🤬). Looks a lot like your football pass analogy. Fast overhand or underhand throw, slides off the palm. I'm sure with a ton of practice could be epically ninja-ish, but strangely enough monolithic hollow points... work even better.

A good technique is a no spin underhand throw. A hold by the handle throw akin to James Coburn in the Magnificent Seven

I don’t rotate it I hold by the handle a use a no spin, but depending on knife you can use a half spin

This uses the samurai technique of throwing shuriken to close the distance and use a katana. Since you have a pistol, it is less useful. It would be a better strategy to throw a kick to buy time and draw. I would throw a knife if I had no choice , for instance the attacker is a shooter and the only weapons I had were knives, as in a gun free zone where criminals are free to have guns. To stick a knife in a tree you need a heavier throwing knife. To stick a knife in flesh you don’t. I have found that Spyderco Enduras work well out to 7 yards with a handle held no spin throw. I carry a pr, and also a fixed blade Kasper Companion. Just from my lessons in life

You can throw harder if you spin it and it will stick every time when you practice enough. How balanced the knife is is not that big of a deal if the knife is heavy. You need to throw a couple hundred times to get good

I’ve got a couple “Morakniv” knives, both are reliable enough for use in a camping situation, but I wouldn’t want to rely on them as a throwing weapon, it’s just too lightweight, I think. I’ve tried throwing knives, even stars, this is who I always have a backup

The trick is the distance from the tree/target. Each person has their “own” distance depending upon arm length, and consistent style. For example, I started somewhat close and the knife bounce off. As I moved back, the area of contact on the knife changed - moving closer to the point of the knife. After a couple of adjustments, I reached a distance where the knife reached the tree point first. From then on, it would always stick (same knife of course) at that distance. Note in the video that the guy kept moving back a little until he reached the right distance for him. Now when you have to throw but are not at your magic distance, if you are close, you might give it a tad more (or less) wrist flick. This is something you gain with practice. It’s an “eyes see, body does” type of thing. Like if you camp with a hammock, you start to just know how far apart a pair of trees are - no need to measure. And you “know” what connection height to the tree is necessary to get the right hang angle. When you are first learning, sure, then you measure. But soon you can just “see” and do. If you want the knife to stick, you’ll know how far away you need to be from the target - along with the style correction if you are a little too close or a little too far.
