In this video, I walk you through the different components that make up a cast net; the components consist of the following:
Hand line
Swivel
Braille Lines
Netting
Lead Lines
Weights
I then show you step by step a straight forward approach on how to throw a large cast net, I noticed many "How to videos" on KZfaq but most don't have clear instruction on how to properly load and throw a net. In this tutorial, I walk you through the very first way I learned to throw a large cast net. It allows you to easily prepare the net, load the net and make a cast that opens 99 percent of the time, if followed like shown. I also give you the cast net specifications for different water depths and bait sizes. See below for reference purposes:
Ideally, your net should have 1.5lbs of lead per radius foot.
¼ inch mesh is ideal for 8 foot of water or less, and is perfect for small greenbacks, glass minnows, mud minnows and pinfish.
3/8 inch mesh is good for 12 foot of water or less, typically good for medium greenbacks, pinfish and shad.
5/8 inch mesh is good for 20 feet or less of water. It's ideal for large greenbacks, shad, pinfish, threadfins and medium mullet and ladyfish.
One inch mesh is used for deep water and large baits, such as large mullet, ladyfish and shad.
Gear used:
Tim Wade custom 10ft net with a 3/8 inch mesh
Sponsors:
St. Croix Rods
Pro-Cure Baits
Orion Coolers

Everyone is so afraid of putting it in their mouth but this method seems the easiest to remember when learning without the video. I’m about to go give it a try. Thanks and hope you’re doing well and in health in these days

Joshua Taylor, I have been castnetting for over 28 years, this video, by far,is clearest and most informative I have ever seen. The method I throw my net is completely different because I usually do it standing in breast high water, but as for standing on something or shallow water, you makes a piece of cake the way you do it. Thanks for the great video.

Finally someone shows how the damn thing closes. Hahaha. I have watched hundreds of these videos trying to figure out what keeps the fish from falling out and finally someone shows the lines to the lead-line. Thanks! Mystery solved for this land-locked guy who has never seen a net in his life.

***** haha thanks bud. Im moving to Africa in a couple weeks right on the beach so I've been watching videos on cast nets, crabbing, shrimping, octopus traps, making sea salt, surf fishing, flounder, lobster traps and all that cool salt water stuff. My only experience with the ocean is catching a little spiny fish that puffed up til i threw him back. I was four years old on a family vacation then. Haha

Nice job. Been trowing 9-13 foot nets for about 40 years. I learned to throw the net from my wife's grandfather who was born on Terra Ciea Island on Tampa bay in 1898. This is how he taught me, so I'm safe to say that this how we "old timers" do it !

THANK YOU! This is hands down the best tutorial I've ever seen. You've helped me to cross over the line to try to lean to throw one. I had previously used a device that helped me throw smaller nets like a frisbee but it can't handle larger or heavy nets and is not of much use usually. I now feel confident enough to purchase a net and practice throwing it using your guide here. Thank you! Now I just have to decide size/mesh and weight to purchase as I'm a big guy at 6'3 370 lbs and I can probably sling a pretty good size one once I learn. So I know a smaller one will be better to learn on but I don't want to waste the money on a net that won't be optimal later. Thanks for discussing mesh size and recommended depths for them-that was very useful for a greenhorn like me. Many thanks Josh-!!

Great instruction. I've tried out many of the other cast net techniques from other KZfaq videos, but this one worked best for me. Thanks. Also, at least for me, letting the section in my mouth get pulled out (a little pull pressure vs. just letting it go) helps me get a better spread. It opens up the backend better. Also, this technique is easier to do in the tight confines of small center console boat, plus you don't have to hold the weight for a long time. I've seen many cast netters that can only throw the net a few times because holding the weight for a long time does them in. Thanks again. Roger.

this basically how i throw mine. you make it seem hard by adding stuff but you can get the same effect with that same net with just folding it and grabing the lead line, then throwing it. the most important thing is to get the lead line to fully open up with as much force as possible. really focus on spinning it to were it rotates outward as much as you can. it takes practice but youll get it.

Yea, I objectively reviewed my boat, while trying not to be bias. I've been on many inshore boats and I prefer my boat over the ones I have been on. Really it's all relative and preference. You just have to find the one that is functional for your intended purpose and one you are happy with.

If you are a small or young kid and want to throw a 10 foot or larger or heavy net without making your back sore or wearing your arm out from holding most of the weight in one hand and without using your teeth or getting your upper body soaked, my video shows a great method. I bought a heavy weighted 14 1/2 pound 10 foot net for my small 13 year old son and using the method in the video I uploaded, he mastered it in about 5 minutes and now throws like a champ.
