@@adamboof6769 no it doesn't. It's a common technique in Kyokushin. It takes a particular set-up for that kind of combat, but it can be adapted. Andy Hugh was a tremendous fighter. I sparred in Kyokushin and they don't flinch at quite heavy blows. I would bet that the spinning low kick would take many by surprise with more effective results then a spinning back kick to the head.
@denisl2760
@denisl2760 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamboof6769 I'd imagine landing to the head would be much harder than landing to the thigh or body. People usually guard their head and move out of the way, very few people would expect a spinning attack to the leg.

Spot on! Beautiful breakdown! You covered everything including the “being nice to your sparring partners by hitting with the bottom of the foot instead of the heel” move. I do that with the regular hook kick too. Turns it into a slap instead damaging your sparring partner’s face.
@GabrielVargaOfficial

@@GabrielVargaOfficial it’s all relative. I usually really pull it too. The guys I usually throw it at have a more Muay Thai type background and aren’t used to seeing kicks from that angle. I throw it early mostly so they have something to worry about for the rest of the round.

One way I was taught to throw the kick was to think of throwing a side kick to the side of the opponent and then pulling the lower leg exactly as you describe. Allowing you to practice both the turning side kick and turning hook kick with similar starting mechanics. I saw the KZfaq of the fight between benny the jet urquidez and Rick Sinmerly, where Benny threw a jump spinning hook kick with a step. He didn't quite land flush with it but it certainly was interesting. You can gain a ton of angular momentum from the movement thats for sure. Thank you for your set up tips!

Another great video sensei, much respect! If I may add something from my experience that I found important. If the foot is straight (taekwondo kick) it has a bigger range for sole/instep slap. But for a K.O. head kick or heavy bag kicks, I suggest using the heel with a bent foot. Hitting a hard target with straight foot and connecting with a heel is a high risk of tremendous stress on a foot tendon which can cause some serious injury. I closely observed Badr's fatal spinning back kick vs Riko and I believe that's exactly what happened to his foot. “The devil is in the detail.” :)

Thanks, going to drill and hopefully add it to the toolbox! A question, I worry that sometimes in sparring I'm just throwing love taps and maybe never let go. Maybe it's to do with stance positioning though? Also I think a video on the benefits to working out of unorthodox may be cool, it's nice to get through with the cross against orthodox opponents, seems unexpected! Thanks!

So slick! Gabriel...seeing as you are a truth teller. Can you do a video on peoples fears about kicking bare shin in fights. One of the most terrifying things coming up from amateur bouts with shin pads....is the prospect of fighting bare shin. And the horror of training and clapping shins with someone haunts the mind moving into prepping for your first no shin pad bout.
@GabrielVargaOfficial
@GabrielVargaOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
I have a video coming out about protecting your shins from breaking but didn't cover your topic much. Honestly you don't feel much in the fight. Adrenaline gets you through. My shins still hurt like crazy if I bump them into something or clash at the gym. In the fight not much pain until after the fight.

@@GabrielVargaOfficial yeah same Gabriel. I find myself explaining this to the few guys i teach so wondered if its a common fear...like maybe someone who's achieved as much as you could put peoples minds at ease. The best setup is hitting someone good with a low kick from the back leg, then faking it while stepping into side stance (pretend to do another low kick but instead let your foot slide into the opposite stance, sidestance if this makes sense?). If they check the low kick that is not coming, they cannot move and thus get hit much easier with the spinning hook kick. You can also do a jumping tornado kick from this amazing setup.
