Watch our Marketing & Fly Fishing Manager, Parker Redmond, demonstrate how to tie the blood knot. With a little practice you'll wonder why you tied differently all this time. This is truly an original way to a fly fishing knot that has been around forever.
This blood knot is great for connecting leaders to tippet. It works exceptionally well when it's windy, cold, dark or if you just need an easier way to get this solid knot tied.
The keys to this blood knot is keeping tension on the knot at all times throughout the tying process. The most difficult step in tying this knot is learning how to twist the center loop. With about 10 minutes of practice though, you should get the hang of it. It just takes a little bit of training and muscle memory before this knot becomes second nature.

Parker, few video's show the real life method of tying a line-- line knot , in a rocking boat, wind blowing, and hands unstable. Gosh this method fits the right way to tie in a real situation. So many video's, so many knots, so many ways to tie them. I will follow your example from now on with ease for a repeatable method I can do anywhere . Thanks much.

If I could like this 1 million times I would. This was the easiest Bloodknot I’ve ever tied. I do you have to look at this video once every year just to remind myself before a trip. Thank you! I hope this never gets taken down lol.

Did this for the first time last night fly fishing for bass on a friends pond. I ran the tag ends in opposite directions. Left one tag end between my teeth while pushing the first one through. First time doing it and was probably about 20 seconds and it looked perfect. Didn’t fail the whole night and I caught a bunch of bass and brim. Thanks Mr. Redmond!

A blood knot is supposed to have the tag ends come out on opposite sides of each other

That's a fun way to do it. Effectively a dropper loop knot like you see for saltwater fishing.

Just tie a square knot then loop the lines over each other and do this same process and it's a lot easier.

tag ends are supposed to go in opposite direction

Absolutely. This is definitely the quickest method I know of for splicing two pieces of tippet together. You can certainly take the extra step to stick the tag ends in opposites sides of the loop. I've never officially performed a strength comparison, however I've not noticed any reduction in knot strength using my method. However! I will say that I think some brands of fluorocarbon could slip out when you go in the same direction. I also haven't tested this but I'm a little superstitious when it comes to fly fishing and normally choose to finish the knot in the traditional manner if I'm using fluoro. Thanks for commenting!

Both ends go the same way. Does that make your mono kink a little the opposite direction? Symmetry might be important.

That looks more complex but lets break it down. 1. We need wraps, right but how many? Say five on each side as a standard to put the loops through. Well, why not just wrap 10 times with one end, does it matter? We need 10 wraps total, so after 5, put your index finger to create space for the loop, and keep wrapping with the same end. At the end bring the ends through. Much simpler.
@parkerredmond5448
@parkerredmond5448 2 жыл бұрын
That would certainly work! We all tie it in different ways and in the end if there's 5 wraps on both sides of a loop then you've got the knot. How we get there is personal preference and I find it simpler to utilize my teeth to aid in the process of creating the loop.
