It's a quick release slip knot with a safety tail end fed through the quick release loop. Beautifully demonstrated. Watching the expert eating skills of these birds, it's hardly surprising if they figure out how to unpick a knot ... avian intelligence is much underrated.

The first Barred Owl I ever rehabbed could untie knots, remove key rings and a variety of other little things. After working with other Raptors for so long, seeing the blatant difference in their thought processes and intelligence was absolutely astounding! While of course I still rehab whatever raptor needs me, I've got an ultra soft spot for Owls as they never cease to amaze me with their innate abilities ♡

Your videos are so well made-you should start your own small business teaching owl falconry and training in Belgium. I would gladly pay you to teach me owl falconry, and I don't even own an owl! Your English is IMPECCABLE. Please continue to make educational and Lookie & Elke fan videos. Unfortunately, I live in America, and a lot of us need videos like yours to keep our spirits up and help with depression as we have to deal with this "person" as the president for now. I say, "Lookie for President!" 😀

We just moved to a big house today where Lookie and Back Up have a big yard and the quality of my vids Will be way better. I'm installing everything tomorrow and Monday and then I'll be back with A LOT of videos hehe. Yeah I'm shocked he made president!

It's not "Owl falconry" if she's not hunting the bird, she's just pet keeping. In the US, you can't keep a barn owl as a pet, you need a falconry license, and to get a falconry license you will need to pass an exam and facility inspections AND have a licensed falconer sign an application form for you. And if you're wanting to keep an owl for a pet under a falconry license, it will be extremely difficult to get anybody to sign for you. Also, why pay for what you can get free from a sponsor?

I guess he had very smart birds then? Lookie has actually never tried to untie the falconers knot. She only pulls her anklets... But it is safer just in case to use two and a half...

If you want to be able to handle them yes... You can remove the jesses whenever your owl is flying freelee though.

That's something my mentors always did. I know how to do it but it's hard to explain. You wrap the owl in a towl so that it can't move (for it's own protection) and you click the anklets together with a special tong.

You need anklets eyelets and dies and then you need a special tool here In the uk called falconry eyelet pliers. You wrap the barn owl in a towel as they dont like their feet or legs being messed with (better if their is two of you) Wrap the anklet round the birds legs and put on a eyelet and die. And then use the pliers to stamp both together thus keeping the anklet on. After that install jessies vegan hippie has videos on her channel showing how to do this. X
