Learn how to tie a Dropper loop to create a strong Paternoster rig for a range off reef species like Red Emperor, Large Mouth Nannygai, Coral Trout, Jewfish, Pearl Perch, Snapper and more. It's also ideal for other bottom feeding species like whiting, Flathead, sharks and more.

This is one of the best videos I've seen, demonstrating how to tie a paternoster rig. Doing it on the black cloth with white coloured line clearly outlines how to tie the rig.

@@pauloakley8424 Yes but the granny knot PLUS passing it over the hook is a Palomar knot. Been using it for 40 years, because its easy to tie in the dark, in wind etc and maintains 97% of the original breaking strain of the line.

So many things in life, such as tying knots, seem difficult with two hands, but could be pretty easy with three hands. Makes me wonder why we evolved with only two when a third-especially a center hand-would be so useful.

Hi Greg, just been practicing this for next time I get out. Question ? I’m doing the overhand knot on the dropper with some 7/0 octopus beak hooks aka suicide hook with the bent hook shank ! Does this same overhand knot thing work with these hooks ? Or should I stick to a straight shank hook ? It does sit slightly funny would it effect it or will be ok or what’s best ? I noticed your circles had bent shanks …
@gregswickedfishing

I've used it on all hooks and even ones with bent shank. Just make sure you try to help it slip down nicely onto the eye as your pulling it tight.

It can also come untied and send your 4oz Weight sailing into oblivion, leaving your line behind. Use a double surgeons loop, and tie a simple square not just above it. The square knot is the weakest link in the rig, and the line will break there.
