How to to tie an Intruder steelhead fly on a waddington shank. This variation of an intruder takes advantage of using both synthetic and natural materials, which allows for the water shedding properties of synthetic and the exceptional movement from the natural materials.

Really like that gold in the rear of the fly. Of course it looks good in the front too but I think the back gives it a shrimp look. I hadn't noticed the metallic differences in the fibers. I don't have any Waddington shanks, I use tubes usually when I tie steelhead flies. I am a tier only because of family illness, I have not been fishing in 10 years! I picked up tying as a hobby to keep my fine motor skills. I am a watch repairman for old mechanical watches. Thanks for sharing your way of tying these fantastic flies. All the best, Sean

Black and blue! Right colours and very talented tie. Parked my down and dirty skagit rig, much prefer to spey a full sink or sink tip scandi without weighted flies. Don’t catch as many fish, but the ones that do hook up are very satisfying.

Thanks for checking it out. Take off the weighted eyes and you could make this work on a scandi rig

@@KevinHospodar Experimenting with 2 station flies on #2 tapered eye heavy wire hooks. From the butt . . . sparse pheasant dub ball, orange guinea hackle, tinsel body, sparse pheasant dub ball, black marabou hackle sparse, blue/black barred marabou sparse, black flash for both sides. Scandi on a 7X LOOP 6wt (7wt any other brand) under a floating mid belly or sink tip Scandi. Catches fish AND a pleasure to spey. Thanks Kevin for this fly and your techniques.

When you set the rear Schlappen, did you intend the concave side to face forward? I noticed the feather turned 180 on you. I tie mine with concave side face the rear wet fly style. Very well narrated video. Buy some new Gorilla Super Glue.

I wish that these tying videos for spey they would mention what lines and tips they would fish that particular fly on

Hey nick. This fly would need a skagit head and appropriate sized leader or tip to turn over. A lot comes down to personal personal preference. But as tied a 450 skagit and 10 ft tip of T11 would be a standard set up to fish this OR a 500 and T14

Hey man, excellent video! I was wondering, as I am just getting into swinging flies and tying them… Do you prefer fire line still over intruder wire and things like that? I just picked up some Senyo wire and I honestly don’t really like it because it is impossible to get through eyelets and kinks so easily. Do you believe the fire line doubled up has the ability to last long enough without sag through multiple hook ups and bouncing off bottom at times?

Thanks for checking it out. Yes I am still on the same style of fire line rigging… and have never had an issues. It survived on flies fished over a few years and catching lots of fish - no issues.
