"If you know, you know. This mini crayfish jig is responsible for taking some of the largest wild trout I've seen from waters where a 12-14 inch fish is memorable. Created by a meticulous rod designer and fly tyer Joe Goodspeed ( @teeth_and_trout ), this pattern belongs in the "confidence flies" box. From slow-moving currents and silty bottoms to heavy pocket water, Joe's Mini Crayfish is best fished on a tighltine/euro nymphing system with the occasional twitch and jig. Fish it directly upstream with a dead drift or even cast quartering upstream to cross-lead the pattern in front of willing participants looking for a large and easy meal scurrying past their face."

This is a killer pattern on the Truckee. With a lower fish count, there are a ton of crawfish in the river. They seem to love this pattern in the summer the most

I wouldn’t call this pattern the #1 cray fish pattern although a pretty cool pattern I know a better one especially for the Truckee.

I fish the river in the northeast where I'm told this fly was developed. The density of crayfish there is unbelievable, and the trout, smallmouth and carp really chow down on the little ones. Even where there are not so many crayfish, you'll find them if you just look for them, so this pattern should work most places. It's a great point fly on a euro rig.

Killer pattern!! Can you share some water systems in CO that hold crayfish? Only one I’ve been able to find through research is the Yampa, but guessing there are others? Cheers!!

Sure thing, I've found that the Colorado river and a good number of its tributaries hold fish that appreciate this fly. I also feel that despite crayfish populations, it's more about surprising fish with this high protein offering that seals the deal. When in doubt, try it and the fish will let you know if its working! I have caught fish on this pretty much anytime I have tried it, regardless of seeing or knowing of any crayfish in the area.

Once you start looking for them, you'll see them, or evidence of them, almost everywhere. Just look down as you walk the banks, and you may see the shells where a mink or raccoon has made a meal of them the night before. Or, in the river, you might see a couple of claws sticking out from under a flat rock. But you won't find them until the water temperature hits 55 or after it drops back down below that in the fall. They'll be burrowed into the riverbed or banks.
