It's called the taught line hitch and is used quite often in camping to adjust tent guylines and other places where you need an adjustable line or rope that will not slip. There is a right way and a wrong way to tie it also. There are many tutorials for it 9n KZfaq as well as other knots for tying up pants using adjustable knots that won't slip or come undone. First Class Amature has tutorials on these and many other types of knots.
