I cooked lunch in the kitchen of a developmentally disabled facility. If it was a popular dish, 85 meals that day. When a social worker brought a new candidate to work in the kitchen, the first thing I did was look at this person’s shoes. If they had velcro instead of laces, I knew, from experience, that their functioning ability was very low. Too low to be much of a help.

Good tip! The REASON the second way works better is easy to understand: because the first way is essentially a "Granny Knot" while the second is a square knot. The Granny Knot is the false square knot and is the bane of all beginning Boy Scouts. I discovered this for myself only recently after decades. But the reason I discovered it is because my 9-year-old son's laces always come untied and I wanted to help him. There remains the question as to why we all tie it the wrong way (a Granny knot). Reason: I am right-handed so the first overhand knot is right over left, and it's easier to follow it by right over left again, giving the Granny. You have to consciously think "roght over left; left over right " to get the square knot described in the video. Now there's a well-known fix known as the double knot: just tie an overhand knot (either direction will work- but best would be another square knot, so R/L, L/R, R/L)) on top of the usual knot. To undo it, you have to first undo the overhand knot, then pull the lace. But this has the disadvantage that if you forget you tied a double knot and simply pull on the lace, it will tighten and be much harder to untie. There's a BETTER OPTION my Dad taught me which he I think taught himself when he was in his 80s. We call it "Grandpa's knot". You tie it just like the standard knot, but you loop it around one extra time. So, it's like R/L overhand, then either way but twice (best would be L/R). Sort of like a "fisherman's knot" which is a many -times-repeated overhand. The ADVANTAGE is it amost never comes undone (almost as stable as the double knot) but it unties with a simple pull of the lace. BUT my son has trouble tying this so we stick with whatever and re-tie it for him in emergency!

It’s been 9 years, but I may as well offer some advice to people who do tie them with bunny ears. Tie the base knot with the right side crossed over the left side, and then tie the bunny ears with the left side crossed over the right side. This should give you the same effect

Exactly! That’s what I always tell people when I try to explain to them how to improve their shoelace tying, but even that simple adjustment is met with a lot of resistance... people just want to do it the way they’ve always done it. Sigh :)

Cameron RJ M It really has! I've only had to retie my shoes a couple times in the last 2 weeks, and it's only been due to stepping or kneeling on the lace and yanking it free. It took about a week of retraining myself to tie it "backwards", but now I do it without too much thought.

You don't even have shoes.

Me too. Just whatever side you put on top on the initial cross, put the other side's loop on top and tie. There's your strong knot.
