Jeff, I work at a Lowe’s as a flooring specialist and I sell a lot of installations. One of the things I learned from our installers is that they prefer to always finish out using sanded caulk in lieu of unsanded caulk because they say it finishes out smoother. This is even when they have used unsanded grout. I am very grateful for your channel and the information you share other than the fact that you’re not near any Lowe’s in your area 😆! I have learned a lot watching you and I use the information to direct a lot of DIYers How to do projects by themselves. I also referred many of them at least three or four times daily To watch your channel for specific projects they’re getting ready to do. Thank you for simplifying things for the rest of us.

Excellent instructional video Jeff. That shower looks amazing.👍 I had my bathroom renovated along with my kitchen by a contractor. I had the tub removed and had a shower put in with the same nooks and seat. I love it. No more worrying about falling in the tub getting in and out. 👍 The shower is not a job I wanted to do. I have done my own backsplash twice. That’s enough for me.

Yes, your work seems professional, and I learned more of your video. I didn't know about installing the top stone by the glass, one thing I won't do is get all walls with grout and had to clean all. It will be easier to do small area only since spacers are small, also grout penetratesthe stone sometimes. Less work. Love the spacers and how to align the stones. Thank you very much and keep up the good work.

Gutting a walk in, similar to yours, including the bench. This whole series is just the ticket for me. Always been a drier. I need to accommodate handicapped rails and handles. I am in Florida and this shower is on an outside wall. After gutting, I am down to the thermal barrier. Will add another layer and also insulate both bedroom walls before doing the cement board. I have ALWAYS said I never want to take apart any project I have done. This one will be overkill, even tho this is a one story built on concrete. THANKS.

Question: Why did you not have to put the waterproofing on the entire wall? I've never seen it done like this but can see that it can save on the expense of waterproofing where it is not needed. Is there a formula for determining how far out from the shower head the waterproofing need to go out? Love all your videos and I've learn so much. Thanks for doing what you do!

He mentioned in the video on backer board installation that he was using what he had left from a previous job, and as this isn't a steam shower he wasn't terribly concerned about waterproofing the entire shower and just wanted enough waterproofing so that typical splashes had a route back to the shower pan.

To prevent the humps in the wall, you're supposed to shim out the studs with cardboard shims before installing the backer. Makes your job super easy. Also, you're supposed to start with the back wall first and start in the center. Also, with any tile over 18", you're supposed to use a 1/2" trowel. Sooo much "wrong" in this video. The only thing you did right in this video was back butter.

@@alexjulius69 well you go in one direction so the air can escape and you get a solid adhesion. You’re right. Just hope the next “professional” that’s there fixing his work later on uses the correct “system” and not just his own.

@@jamesthornton5727 It'll be fine, I don't know much about construction, but there's a big ego problem in these labour sectors such as construction, that's all there is to it. So like I said, keep your ballsack in your pants and don't look for fault where there isn't any.

This is an excellent video and I even like that you didn't spilt this into 6x 10 minute segmants like alot of other people do on KZfaq. Watched the majority of this on my work break as I'm contemplating doing my entire new bathroom myself as local people are quoting me ridiculous prices to do the job. I guess the initial cost for me would be purchasing all the required tools first of all and getting confident with them.

Yes, that is the trade-off. You either pay for contract or buy the tools for yourself and hope that you will use it later and that you have more tools for yourself.

That tile is really pretty but it sucks the way it matches on the butt ends 😕 That metal edging is dead SEXY!! But I’m not sure my rear would fit in that bench-and I’m in the small side 🤔🤣

My father was an Ironworker and knew his trade well. He had a term for a man who knew the trade and performed at a high level. That term was "workwise" and you also demonstrate that quality. I still maintain much of what he taught me today; such as measure "measure twice and cut once." Although I chose to go to college and become a teacher I have been a lifelong DYI man and have also worked as a heavy commercial carpenter and ironworker when not teaching. I am curious about your knowledge. You know more than more men and have great technique. Tell us a little about yourself. I know a lot of fellows have probably wondered how you learned so much about so many things. Enlighten us please. By the way, your wife is a nice addition to an episode that I recently watched. Good luck and hope that you produce many more episodes. From Idaho.

This guy's strengths include his enthusiasm, his ability to clearly and completely explain what he's thinking, his broad familiarity with a wide range of remodeling products, approaches and styles and the large amount of detailed information that he conveys. His weaknesses include his desire to make everything appear easy, his willingness to sometimes accept quick and imprecise solutions to problems rather than take extra time to properly correct them, and the fact that his work is not always consistent with his explanations. He is not a full time tile setter and it shows. My comments approximately follow the order of the video. Process comments: 1) He does not appear concerned with protecting the shower pan that he is working on. Don't follow his example. Some perimeter painter's tape prevents any scuffing from thinset drips along the edges, while a thick drop cloth with a sheet of plywood on top provides good protection against damage if something drops. 2) His thinset is a little bit too wet and runny throughout the video (not just at the end). Not a problem, but characteristic of part time tile setter. He says a lot of good things about what a quality niche install should look like. Making a niche line up perfectly with a grout line is not easy, but he pulls it off. Except: somehow, even after explaining how important it is to make your tile lines consistent through the niche, he botches it (37:01-38:59). The left side niche tile sits higher than the adjacent wall tile. While telling us how to avoid such mistakes he has, ironically, done the opposite. His bench is worst mistake we see because the trim looks exactly like what it is: a hasty fix for a mistake. At 2:20 he brags that his planning is “perfect,” but at 15:35 we can see the problem: the top of the metal edge of the seat sits below the level of the wall tile. Much later at 42:56 he goes into a cringeworthy rationalization. It's BS: the wall tile was mis-cut. His solution of doubling up on the metal edge looks, and is, quite unprofessional. In addition, at 27:44 the hollow end of the metal edge is showing. He should have mitered that, or used a corner piece if available. Don't follow his example.Rather than moving fast, be patient. If you were doing this same job, you would be wise to do this: set the wall tile piece, then hold the bench front piece in place with the trim on top to see how it looks. You would see how the wall piece needed to be recut and you would pull this one off, cut a new one, install and check again. His design decision seems odd. Normally the wall tile on the ends of the shower are symmetric. In this case that would mean that the right side would finish just as the left side did: with only the metal edge extending down along the side of the pan as he discusses at 1:55. But since the right side wall tile butted up against the long wall tile, it would have protruded roughly 1/2” beyond the shower pan. I'm starting to think that he tried to be too cute with trying to build a shower to exactly match the tile size. The grout line that goes straight down from the bottom of the metal edge looks bad. It looks like another design error. He should have made the bench about 6” shorter on the right and then ended the tile on the right wall just like he did on the left.
