Video #743: Pinata Alcohol Inks mixed with Sculpey Liquid Bakeable Clay, Kato Liquid Polyclay, Fimo Liquid Gel and Translucent Liquid Sculpey (TLS)... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Today in the PcT Test Lab, I'm going to show you how to tint liquid polymer clay with alcohol inks.
The reason I thought to do this testing is that Sculpey recently sent my a sample of their newest Sculpey Liquid Bakeable Clay - Pearl, which is one of their new products for 2016. You may be familiar with the Gold and Silver version of liquid Sculpey that came out last year.
Now I was thinking... since they have Gold and Silver, I thought it would be fun to have a bunch of different colors in the Pearly clay, so I experimented by mixing alcohol inks into the Sculpey Liquid Pearl.
Then I compared those mixes with the other brands of liquid polymer clay.
In the video, I show baked examples of Pinata Alcohol ink in the colors Senorita Magenta, Sapphire Blue and Sunbright Yellow... mixed into each of the following brands/types of liquid polymer clay... Kato Liquid Polyclay (Clear), Fimo Liquid Gel, Translucent Liquid Sculpey (TLS), Sculpey Liquid Bakeable Clay (Pearl), Sculpey Liquid Bakeable Clay (Silver) and Sculpey Liquid Bakeable Clay (Gold).
The samples were made using a pea sized ball of liquid clay and one drop of alcohol ink, that were mixed thoroughly and spread as thin as possible onto a glass tile to bake. Make sure to mix the liquid clay and alcohol ink before the ink dries, or the clay will look speckled.
Each sample was baked at 275F (135C) for 1 hour. Note that the label suggests Fimo Liquid Gel should be baked at 265F (130C), but that it will be more translucent at a higher temperature. So I baked it at 275F with the rest of the samples and saw no adverse affect.
From my tests, all the different brands tinted beautifully, though I noticed that the Kato Liquid Polyclay and the Senorita Magenta seemed to darken quite a bit. The colors with the biggest difference were the colors mixed with the Sculpey Liquid Gold, which makes sense, because the Gold particles in the clay added to the color tint. The Magenta turned it Coral, the Blue turned it teal and the Yellow made it very bright Gold.
The baked liquid clay kept it's clarity and strength. Other than the color tinting the properties stayed the same as it was before tinting.
I also did some samples where I mixed the Yellow and the Blue together in the liquid clay's... which basically shows that the color mixing possibilities are endless, when you start combining colors.
So go ahead and mix up a rainbow of Liquid Polymer Clay in clear or the new Pearly colors. You're not limited to plain old translucent liquid clay anymore!

My Michael's finally got in the gold and silver liquid Sculpey, I picked up a gold last week and yesterday went to use my coupon on the silver but saw the pearl there as well. Was a nice surprise, but I used my coupon on the beginning bead making kit. Now it will be sold out once people realize it's in the store! lol. Thanks again for another great demo, Cindy!

Very cool! I feel like with all the colors, the kato was a bit patchy but I suppose if you're using a bigger quantity it won't matter so much. Thanks so much, Cindy!

Every time you put up new videos of new products I get so jealous. My local Michaels just stocked the new Sculpey Soufflé line. Wonder how long I'll have to wait for these :)!

I don't know your location, I'm in NYC, and the Michaels in my area does have Adirondak Alcohol inks which I have seen in videos and seem to work beautifully according to those videos; I have also seen bottles of liquid sculpey there though I can't vouch for the colors as I didn't even want to look and get tempted

I have a quick question, i bought some clay from a private person, and a lot was in the package but a lot of them were just a mess, all the color are dirty and some are dried up . I know from your video, i can clean some of it with alcohol and heat up to make it work. Do you have any other suggestions ? Thanks. :)

Is it ok to bake liquid clays for an hr like we do with clay blocks? The clay blocks packages say to bake them for 30 mins but baking them for an hr makes them stronger and doesn't really do anything to them other than making them slightly darker, but is liquid clay the exception and do they change? I'm planning on series baking a charm, it's going to have chocolate sauce in liquid clay as well as hot chocolate, but i also plan on using TLS as a varnish on it but between me wanting to bake my premo parts for 1hr with the TLS and what i'm using it for it's getting confusing planning how to go about it. Some of my clay component pieces will be partially submerged into the TLS like a gingerbread man sitting in hot chocolate, but i still have to figure out a way to bake them all around the same time because i want to seal the pastel chalk in with TLS for a matte finish. If we can bake them longer than 30 mins how much longer before they start behaving negatively?

Hi, really enjoy all of your videos! I'm new to Polymer Clay and wondering if India Inks (like Dr PhMartin's Bombay) can also be used to tint liquid OR regular clay? Thanks for all the great info.

So, I make my own alcohol inks by using isopropyl alcohol and permanent markers. That's not especially relevant to my question, except that I store the ink in little eye-dropper bottles. Do you know if you would be able to mix the liquid sculpey and the alcohol ink, and store it in an eye dropper bottle for future use? Or would it not store well? If I could store it, I could just make a bunch of colors ahead of time and have them on hand when I need to use them. That way I wouldn't have to guess how much I was mixing and waste what I didn't get to use.

Super test Cindy! Much appreciated. Wondering if using alcohol inks would be easier and/or a cleaner process than Genesis bake on paints - which require thinner and brush cleaner, etc. Of course, these liquids would have a thicker result. Any insight on that?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 8 жыл бұрын
I have never used Genesis paints so I really can't advise you there. But if you needed thicker liquid clay, you could probably just use a little less ink or let it dry a little before mixing.

terrific video; recently bought some Adirondak alcohol inks and have just begun to experiment with them. I have a request: I have the sculpey hollow bead maker but have lots of difficulty attaching the two sides together so that it looks seamless, or at least if not, attractive. I've seen that you've done that with a mokume gane necklace which is gorgeous - could you do a video on how to attach the two sides. Thanks so much!

Hi I’m fairly new to polymerclay and I’m trying to experiment with alcohol inks I purchased from Amazon, I was advised that’s it’s flammable and could possibly make my oven explode and now I’m nervous about it even tho I’ve seen others do it, is there a specific type of ink to use that’s safe or a recommended baking time? I’d appreciate your help , thank you 💞
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 3 жыл бұрын
First of all your oven won't explode, whoever said that doesn't know what they're talking about. (Perhaps if you put a whole bottle of it inside a gas oven, flames could happen, but hopefully no one is dumb enough to do that!) Just let the ink dry before putting in the oven. All the alcohol dissipates after a few minutes and is no longer flammable.

I love rose beads, sometimes known as rosebud beads. How would you go about producing them in clay? I have had limited success, but would love to have them come out more consistently round and equal in size. Then there would be no limit to the colors and effects you could have them in!

I love your videos so much. I'm going to try alcohol ink in my liquid clay...I do have a question: can I embed paper in liquid clay then bake it? Is this dangerous, in terms of paper in the oven?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can embed paper in liquid clay and bake it. Paper combusts at 451F and we bake polymer clay at 230F-325F depending on the type and brand. As long as paper doesn't touch the elements directly, it is fin in the oven... especially if it is covered in liquid clay. Thank you for the kind words!
