Thank you so much. I have been playing sax for three years and have been told that my tonguing is a bit “soft”. Asked if I was using my tongue on the reed, my answer was “Yes’. I WAS, but I was touching the end of the reed with my tongue. It was not until I saw your excellent demonstration in this video that I realised what I had been doing wrong for the last three years. I now have much more distinct articulation and phrasing. Thank you very much for the demonstration and advice.

Thankyou. Such a comprehensive and easy to follow video. I started learning alto sax 2 weeks ago because I'm bored silly in lockdown and since having surgery. I'm a former pro bass trombonist (classical) and have been involved in music for almost 40 years. What I have found is that tonguing in principle is the same for the sax as for the trombone. However, what is very different is perfecting it when now I have s mouthpiece inside my mouth and previously it was up against my mouth. Changes things slightly when it comes to double & triple tonguing, circular breathing etc. Czardas isn't yet a part of my repertoire but I've set myself the goal of playing it before the end of the year. xx

Excellent information. With so much disinformation out there about articulation finding this was a real eye opener. I had the same experience as you, and in fact I avoided using my tongue because very early on I saw KZfaq video of a very well known Berklee sax teacher saying he´d like to cut out his students tongues. He said you could get a better sound just having good technique. I am sure there is an argument for this, but after recording myself again and again, I could hear I needed articulation. So almost 4 years into learning sax I am beginning.

Hi Jamie, As always, very good and educational. Would you consider doing a video on Astor Piazolla's LIBERTANGO for Bb and Eb in keys of DM and AM respectively. There's a lot of staccato tonguing and fast, furious fingering to learn if you're new or not so new to playing sax. What's the best way to practice such semi-complex pieces? Really enjoying your lessons.

Thank you Jamie. There are givers and takers in this world and surely you are a giver. I am brand new to saxophone and have found your first four instructional videos extremely helpful. I actually will put my saxophone together tomorrow and give Mary Had A Little Lamb a go. I will be 69 the end of this month and love the saxophone. I know this is a terribly open question, but once I learn the basic notes should scales be concentrated on mostly? I greatly appreciate your help. John here, from the back-roads of Tennessee. :)>

@GetYourSaxTogether

First thing is to swab it every time you play. I guess you could sanitise with Milton’s fluid or whatever but don’t leave it standing in it. It’s quite easy to discolour mouthpieces.

Great video, Jamie. I don't think I've been using the right part of my tongue to articulate, and this video helps. If I may ask, is it best to keep the middle and back of my tongue down between my molars normally, and only lift it up for a particular effect?

Hello Jamie, I've been playing just over a year, I'm 69 and it's my first serious instrument !! I'm working through your videos. Just realised I never learned to tongue from the beginning !! I have a tenor and used a Yamaha 4C with a 2.5 American cut . I got quite used to it and was getting on fine... until i dropped and broke both the 4C and the reed. I have gone back to cane reeds,(Legere 2.5) and bought a Select Jazz 7. I just can not get on with the Jazz, I miss a lot of notes. run out of breath but those higher notes sound great when I do get them, Should I persevere or go back to a 4C and the American cut or am I doing something wrong ?? I asked this question on your live you Tube but I wasn't clear as to what the problem was. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

My tounge has problems. The tip of my tounge goes up when I tounge. Like a j shape. Like inverted than the usual anchor tounge shape.

Struggling with legato tonguing since I started playing 4 years ago. I can only legato tongue on repeated notes, but cannot legato tongue from one pitch to another. There’s always a gap. If I tongue extremely slow from one note to another there’s still a slight gap. Is this a coordination of tonguing and fingers flaw I have? My finger technique is very good. I can play Sanborn and top 49 pop song solos that I have transcribed and etudes no problem and clean as long as I slur.

Just discovered the pdf ..fab! However Jamie some of the scales only go up to E rather than F. Why is that if we are to play over the full range?
@GetYourSaxTogether

I guess some people don't have a high F# key and that will be their limit on some scales. You should play up as high as you can for your ability though. :-)

How can I vary the loudness of the tone? You sometimes use the analogy of a pressured hose or tap which can be released a little but with backpressure still remaining. But I cannot remember you ever explaining what you mean with that, how it's done. Is it breath control? Or tongue? or both? or what?

I wouldn’t overthink it too much. To blow louder you just blow harder. That’s kinda it!

The problem is mostly with continuous notes in a Melody . For example if I'm playing A Bb Bb Bb . Bb.... The Bb notes have poor articulation. It just sounds like one stream of notes (rushed)

Ok, well, I can't diagnose anything over a KZfaq comment, but "rushed" sounds like it's more to do with timing than tonguing? J:-)
