Thinking about TikTok for business? Then you need to know about hashtags! Find out how hashtags work on TikTok - and how to track them - inside the video!
Hey, it’s Chia from Brand24 and this week we’re talking about how hashtags work on TikTok.
So, TikTok is a social media platform where users can share short videos, in a format that’s kind of like Vine, Snapchat and Instagram combined. And similar to Instagram, TikTok is virtually powered by hashtags. It’s how users share content, find content, and also how communities are built … which is why it’s so important for businesses to know how to use and track hashtags on TikTok.
But first, let’s briefly go over the basics of the app. TikTok is all about videos, especially musical ones. If you’re familiar with the musical.ly app, then you’re sure to spot a lot of similarities, since it merged with TikTok just last year, to create a much larger video-based social platform still under the name, TikTok. And TikTok is really well-designed to foster engagement through content, which you can tell from the kind of features that it has.
For instance, the React button lets users engage with each other through reactions. Basically, if you see an interesting video on TikTok, instead of just ‘liking’ it or leaving a comment, you can take it a step further by making a new video that incorporates your reaction to it.
And Duets are another cool feature that encourages TikTok creators to collaborate and engage with each other through content. Just like with the React button, you can create new content by adding onto someone else’s video. But instead of just having a small window for your reaction, both the video and yours are displayed side-by-side.
Features like these are designed to keep users on the platform for as long as possible by encouraging engagement through content creation. This makes it the perfect place for creators to connect, and for businesses to learn more about their potential customers and what they’re interested in, especially with TikTok growth showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This also makes it the ideal channel for influencer marketing with TikTok creators who have built amazing communities around their content.
And TikTok definitely isn’t just for businesses that market to teenagers or generation Z. Even newspapers like The Washington Post maintain an active presence on the platform.
So, actually, that’s a good question: why would a publication that generally discusses more serious topics - like national politics and the federal government - invest in building brand awareness on TikTok?
Because it’s a great place to (a) reach a younger demographic, (b) figure out how to cater to that demographic, and (c) it’s just necessary to keep up and grow with technology if you don’t want to become tomorrow’s out-of-touch dinosaur...
But now - what about hashtags on Tik Tok?
Well, hashtags are at the heart of the platform; just look at all the Hashtag Challenges!

😜 I used to purposely have more sections with full-screen images where you could only hear my voice, but then it seemed a little pointless to do that unless I was showing the viewer something very useful on-screen... _you live, you learn_!

Hey Jordy! 👋🏻 Yep, every single video tagged with that hashtag can be found on the Hashtag Page - if you don't see your video, you may need to either refresh your feed or just keep scrolling down, especially if you're using super popular hashtags that everybody else is using too (like #friday when posting on Friday). Question when creating content for tiktok. Do I mainly focus my hashtags on what the video's content is about? Do I only put hashtags that are trending or a mixture of both? I want to know if tiktok works the same as youtube's hashtags.

Relevance is a must. You want to use trending hashtags, but you also don't want to overlook relevant hashtags that aren't quite as popular. If you use only top trending hashtags that have tons and tons of videos, it will be harder to stand out... but if you omit them entirely, there may not be enough interest. Try to use a mix of both - but only the ones that really apply to your vid, or it can look spam-y - paired with popular songs (and, of course, awesome videos)... Hope this helps!!

Hey Shubham! 👋🏻 I think it's always better to use relevant hashtags - this helps audiences who are truly interested in the topic of your video find your content. And this probably goes without saying, but the best way to get more likes and followers is to keep creating your best content and share consistently and engage on the platform. Have fun with it 😀 you can really explore your creative side here - and def don't forget to engage with other creators through Duets and Reactions, or participate in some fun hashtag challenges. Algorithms often favor profiles that are very active ~

Thanks Wilson! The first thing you want to do is create a hashtag to use for your challenge (like the #DistanceDance or #SavageChallenge)... and then start using it! 😉 You'll want to coordinate with your marketing team to generate interest, but ultimately you have to just start using it (try to activate and engage your colleagues and people from your company if you can). It doesn't have to be a dance: there are challenges involving food, arranging gummy bears, and the famous #BottlecapChallenge where people had to come up with different ways to open a bottle without using their hands... it depends on your brand personality and how you want to engage your community... but I'd say the most important thing is to have fun with it 💃🕺 that's what TikTok is for! Hope this helped a bit! 💪

Hi! I'm a regular Instagram user who shares my hobby. There are several hashtags I use, and when I search those hashtags, I'll find my post. I had been interested in Tiktok, so I created an account, made sure it was public, and posted a video using related hashtags, but after I searched those hashtags, I couldn't find my video. Hi Jennifer! As long as your TikTok video contains hashtags, it's linked to the corresponding Hashtag Page. *However*, since videos aren't dated on TikTok, we know the feed isn't chronological. This means that if you're using the same super popular hashtags that top TikTok influencers are using, your video risks getting pushed down to the bottom of the page or jammed somewhere in-between, making them easy to overlook - unless it receives a lot of engagement (engagement is key!). Is it possible that you used super popular hashtags that a lot of top TikTok influencers were using, so that your videos kept getting pushed down making them hard to find?

You can save the video and re-upload it (so you don't have to spend time editing the video again) with new hashtags. Otherwise, as Abigail mentioned, it is currently not possible to edit hashtags after the video has been posted ~

Hi! So one thing I want to mention before we try to troubleshoot is: if you are not 16+, then your video might not appear on the Hashtag Page (used to be 13+, but it's reported to be rising). Otherwise, a "shadow ban" can also prevent your video from appearing on the Hashtag Page - and this could have been prompted by an earlier video, not necessarily your latest one. This means that to figure out what's going on, you want to look at your account as a whole - especially for videos where you start to notice less engagement or if you have any earlier videos that also didn't appear under the Hashtag Page: ▪️ Do you have more than one TikTok account on your device? (It's best to stick to one account per device) ▪️ If you make a video with more than 1 person, tag everyone, but try to post it from just 1 account - you can always share it later (multiple posts of the same video from different accounts can look spam-y). ▪️ Ensure the audio doesn't say "trying to obtain copyright" and that you've tagged the right song/sound (or the algorithm might think that music copyrights have been violated). ▪️ Make sure you're using relevant hashtags, and none that have been shadow banned. ▪️ Avoid using any props that may look like guns, knives or other weapons. ▪️ Don't post more than 3 videos per day ▪️ Vertical videos are preferred. ▪️ Double-check to make sure you adhere to all Terms of Service. If it's not because of age, then you can troubleshoot the problem via the list above. Most shadow bans are reported to last around 2 weeks, and it helps if you can go through the checklist to identify the issues, and perhaps hide the videos that might be raising red flags to get your account back in TikTok's good graces. Hope this helps! 💪

Hi! The lines between social media and TV are getting pretty blurry, especially where TikTok is concerned. Quite a few shows have been launching campaigns on TikTok recently to generate interest (an article that touches on this here: digiday.com/media/inside-comedy-channel-daves-tiktok-strategy/ ). Regarding any hashtags and/or content that TikTok doesn't want to promote... there have been concerns about the censorship of certain topics, presumably to protect users from being bullied: www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/dec/03/tiktok-owns-up-to-censoring-some-users-videos-to-stop-bullying The platform may be loosening up about this, though: www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/01/28/tiktok-has-become-soul-lgbtq-internet/ P.S. Do hashtags play a part in your video views and should we always us the trending hashtag

You can try to think of hashtags as a kind of "organizational" system. Each hashtag refers to a theme / topic, and they help people who are interested in those themes / topics find videos they might enjoy. If your video is relevant to a trending hashtag, you can use it, and it can potentially boost your views (combined with other factors, like music and engagement, etc.)! But if it's totally unrelated, use another hashtag instead; otherwise, your account can be seen as 'spam-y' and the algo doesn't like that.

Hey Steff, I'm afraid it's not (currently) possible to add or edit your hashtags once you've made your video public :-( If you realllllly want to use different hashtags, the easiest way to do that is by "saving" that video in your account and then re-uploading it (so you don't have to spend time editing the video again) with new hashtags. But remember to delete the version with the old hashtags, or the algo may find your account spam-y 😉

Hi! My guess is that the hashtags are blocking parts of the videos on TikTok so you can't read the text or see part of the screen? Unfortunately, there's no "official" way to do this, but there are a couple of "hacks": (1) If you long press on the video, the option to report it pops up and then the caption and hashtags are hidden (but don't actually report the video, unless that's your intention! :-P) Part of the middle of the screen will be blocked by the pop-up, but the area where the caption & hashtags usually are will be visible. (2) You can also download the video, and then the hashtags won't be displayed when you view the downloaded version. Hope this helps! :-)

It's a combination of so many things: trending songs, trending/relevant hashtags, challenges, collabs and... _engagement, engagement, engagement_! Basically, TikTok will show or recommend your video to more users if they think that your videos will keep users on their platform... which means engagement! Don't worry too much about whether your video is visible on the Hashtag page (although it's still really important to use relevant + trending hashtags!!!); instead, aim to get on the For You page. This means creating videos that encourage people to comment / share / like, etc (I know it's hard, but engagement is key). And for a little bump that could make all the difference, try letting your friends and followers know whenever you have a new TikTok video up (via email, chat, posts on external platforms, etc...) and ask them for their support if they like it! It's currently not possible to change hashtags after your video has been posted. You can save the video (so you don't have to spend time editing again) and then re-upload it with new hashtags but, unfortunately, you can't *edit* hashtags to a posted video.

If it's not because of age, then you can troubleshoot the problem via the list above. Most shadow bans are reported to last around 2 weeks, and it helps if you can go through the checklist to identify the issues, and perhaps hide the vids that might be raising red flags to get your account back in TikTok's good graces. Oops, you're right, I forgot to include that part 😅: So, after you've uploaded your video, applied any filters / stickers / transitions, etc., you'll be taken to the "Video Description" section. That's where you can put your caption, tag people, and apply any hashtags that you want to use ~ hope this helps!!

Yeah, it's kind of a pain. Some creators try to track dates by commenting on their own videos as soon as they publish. That's one way to do it, since the comments are dated, but even then they're not displayed chronologically. So if you get a ton of engagement on a video, you might still have to dig through the comments section to find the one with your timestamp. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hey Daniel, unfortunately, you can't really block hashtags (at least not currently). You *can* turn on Restricted Mode (to avoid seeing content that might not be appropriate for audiences of all ages) under "Digital Wellbeing" in your app settings. And you can also long-press on videos that you're not interested in seeing again. Hope this helps!

Hi Rhys!! Hashtags can be pretty helpful here ~ have you tried participating in some hashtag challenges? And do you use hashtags for all of your videos? (This might seem a bit tedious, but unless your vid gets featured by TikTok on the For You page, hashtags are a key element in helping you get more views). Engagement is another one: TikTok will recommend your video to more viewers if they think that it will help keep users on TikTok (it's a cycle 🔄), which is measured by engagement (shares, comments, likes, etc). Basically, using the right *hashtags* will help people find your video in the first place, while more *engagement* will help you get featured by the algorithm. Something small you can do to help (in addition to using good hashtags) is to let people know as soon as you post a new video, whether it's via email, Messenger or Twitter... and ask them for their support if they like it! (I hope that doesn't sound too corny, but that initial wave of support from your followers can help you get more engagement, which means more subs and more views.) Hope this helps!! Hey Soledad! After you've uploaded your video onto TikTok and finished editing it, you'll be taken to a page where you can enter your caption/video description and that's also where you can add your hashtags (you'll see a "hashtag" button).
