Thank you Susan and DogsThat team! We have had Stevie, our Greek rescue for two weeks and this almost made me cry. She is doing really well, but I am a wreck. Please keep posting step by step how you dealt with reinforcing the good stuff so that the stuff they are used to from their previous life doesn't seem so great---you named a few in the video that Tater Salad did. As a new dog owner, it is difficult to know if I am reinforcing poor behaviour or if I am helping Stevie make the right choices.

When I got my 5yr old Daisy it was apparent that she had been abused. She was afraid of hands so I made of some hand games to play. She was so tender we really watched our tone of voice. But the biggest incident that showed us we were on the right track was when she got brave enough to try and raid the trash. But she got in the trash! She felt secure enough to get in the trash! I wanted to celebrate. I calmly told her to leave it, she did without quaking in fear so we celebrated that instead. Daisy blossomed and went on to participate in agility, obedience, rally and was a pet therapy animal. Age caught up with us and she lost her vision so we started playing nose work. She passed 1/2021 at 13. I miss the flower within my heart every day.

Would love to see the early video training of Tater - I think it would be super helpful for us to see how he was and how he became a "model citizen"

So glad you did an episode specific to rescue dogs! I started your Recallers course a few months ago and it's been a game changer with my 85 lb rescue. We were in a downward spiral with difficult walks and lots of fear around people. Yesterday, we took a walk and it was a breeze. We said "hello" to another dog. We received pets from two humans. We ignored a cat. The results we've experienced with Recallers is nothing short of miraculous. Thank goodness we didn't give up before finding this step-by-step method.

I think its extremely important to acknowledge that rescues have an adjustment period where their serotonin is higher. This is typically the first 3 to 5 days but some rescues who have more trust issues can take longer. This is NOT the time to introduce your rescue to kids outside the home or a multitude of new situations. That adjustment period is important to build trust and basic boundaries with your rescue.

May should be a whole month of rescue themed videos!!! Aggression, confidence...I know I could use one on the human body chewing alone 😂

Listening to this again! Honeymoon period of about two weeks. That’s how long we had a rescue when some resource guarding over a toy popped up, directed toward my, at the time, 11 year old. I was totally unprepared and freaked out and brought her back. 😭😭😭 Also- that 5 days a week living with you, and 3 days with my husband sounds spectacular! 😂

After working with guide dogs, I was asked to adopt a rescue. I took the dog off kibble, feed 💯 raw. I use a journal. The training never ends and I love Susan Garrett! Took a year for him to understand trust. Susan taught me, "Grow where you know!" Best advice ever!!

Thanks for posting this I think I’m the last week we have watched 7 or more of your videos after rescuing our dog. She has chewed through and broken 3 crates. Ate our camper door and after 4 days has found her lungs. She went from this “timid loving dog” the pound told us she was to what we have nick named the “devil dog” our “he’ll hound”. But I won’t give up on her. We are going to help her relax and trust men again. She won’t get near them or women with hats on. She barks and barks and then shakes in fear. It’s been really hard on my husband as he loves dogs. But our dog Jojo does not love him back. Any pointers on not loving a certain gender and being terrified of that gender. Having 3 adult sons and a husband. I really want her to love the whole family not just our little 3 kids and me. Glad I found your channel.

I got a shelter dog with no behavioural issues apart from being totally new to the environment, still with her pink nose and paw pads unused, and being scared of it all, leaf or flag in the wind etc, water running across the road, whatever. So this is interesting advice. However, i kept her name Cloé, she entered a shelter in spain at he age of approx 12-14 months, and i adopted her from a shelter in france at the age of 18 months. iIthink one of the shelters called her Cloe and i didn't change her name, but she was also called many other nicknames. she was gradually allowed the bed and other things, though she did insist a bit. i was most probably her first real guardian/human. Thanks for the advice and any more.

OMG this is perfect. Signed up for recallers a couple of weeks ago AND I started with a dream rescue. After two weeks she stopped listening, nipping guests etc.

Geez, It makes me so sad to know how much help I needed 15 years ago. Multiple rescues and fosters later...well let's just say I'm here now. It's never to late for a 12 year old Senior Berner to pick up a few new habits. What I see many many MANY people needing is training for dogs jumping up on you and incessant barking. My neighbour has a dachshund that breaks my heart with his barking. Anyway, my household luv, love LOVES you!

Agree, agree, agree. I have and work with people with rescue dogs and boy it is so hard to get new owners to understand 'reinforcement and practice of bad behavior' ...

Ok, I had to laugh when you said, borrow some children…..lol. That’s not exactly the wording I use when speaking to clients who have no kids. Since I don’t have kids, I have and still do borrow kids. I find them in the parks, downtown at a skateboard park etc. That is so empowering not only to the person at the end of the leash, but the kid you borrowed. I ask parents if I can use their child and with that permission, I’m off and running. It’s great. Especially with skateboards, bikes, scooters etc. Dogs that chase are trained at a distance and brought closer and closer as their ability to respond to cues etc are established. I am on dog #31 in 40 yrs of being blessed with owning dogs of my own. I have rescued, purchased and brought in dogs needing to be re-homed but didn’t get that far as I kept them…lol. Luckily that was only 2 dogs. I am playing “its yer choice” with my newest Border who is deaf and 10 months old in 2 days. She caught on just as quick as the hearing dogs. Great point on planning to be home. I took 2 rescues at the same time (ya, Im crazy) and could not be home due to work. The only thing that saved me was the crate while I was working or sleeping. I first thought it only applied to the puppy, but learned the hard way it also is needed for adult dogs. She climbed over the gate, climbed onto the kitchen counter and ate an entire loaf of bread. Puppy became Houdini escaping from her crate so we had to secure her with thumb clips. She knew how the latches worked and could open them at 4 months old.

Just watched rescue dog #78. We have a 1 year old rescue CoonHound; he ihas been here 7 month. We love him to death, but there are the obstacles. I had to smile when you talked about us being used as the toy table-yeh that's Yoshi. I have to say that our friends are surprised that see the progress he has made; particularly indoors. Once outside forget about it other then the loose leash walking without distraction. I would love to see the earlier video, showing the way for Yoshi to be the perfect creature he is. Or for that matter any other podcast, utube. I am following the recallers which has helped me quite a bit in recognizing where I go wrong. Many Thanks

Have my own “Tater”. Former puppy mill breeder, female. In 14 weeks we have gone from the-world-is-scary-and-I’m-not-going-out-there to walking in mostly quiet parks that are not heavily populated; walking pretty successfully around our neighborhood and even showing curiosity about other dogs and maybe one or two people; sniffing the ground on walks and showing interest; being able to ride in a cart through a lg hardware store and meeting people (I think the cart feels safe-crate-like); running around the house, up and down stairs instead of hiding in her own corner; peeing/pooing outside; usu not lunging at other dog’s bowl and sitting and waiting for own bowl; seeing rabbits on a walk and not chasing; enjoying lots of petting and cuddles; learning yes, no, wait, new name, come here, sit;. Things that are current (big) challenges: not pulling on leash; not also peeing/pooing inside when given free run of the house. And not seeing men as threatening. There are periods of time when I am amazed at the sudden progress and how far we’ve come, and days when I despair and have to remind myself that in a six months or a year this will be a distant memory.

I really wish I had someone tell me this about appropriate goal setting when I first got my rescues. I learned by trial and error that to get good behavior on long walks that I had to first get it walking down our driveway. My goals got more and more incremental, breaking things down after each fail. (Some epic fails in the park. Luckily nothing life threatening.)

Thanks Susan! I have just finished binge watching/listening to your podcast series and am both eager and overwhelmed! My question is, with Tater Salad, did you work on all his issues at once? Or work on the anchor issue one day, then the people chewing the next, etc?? With how reactive he was with having his nails trimmed, did you work on desensitizing him a little every day, and he just had to suffer with long nails until he would let you clip them? I have a 10 month old Maltese that loves to bite at the comb when I try to comb him. I'm trying to figure out how to train him not to do this, but with his coat, I can't wait 2 weeks with no combing for him to figure it out, or he'll have mats to be dealt with! I would LOVE to see how you train your dogs to love husbandry, because with the combing, nail trimming and tooth brushing, it seems pretty vital to get it figured out!! Thanks for being fabulous!

Thank you Susan, I made quite a few mistakes when my rescue first came to me. So I have struggled, but I’m not looking back anymore, we still have some issues but the awesomeness is shinning through. Love your teachings, and strive to be the best I can for my boy.

Thanks for this video! I noticed that Susan said that she handled Tater taking things that he shouldn't have by teaching him the Bring Me program and asking him to bring it to you when you see him picking up items. I was wondering how this works when Susan isn't home. Has Tater progressed to the place where he can be trusted to have free access to the house whilst unattended and not take anything he shouldn't? This is the hurdle I'm trying to overcome with my dog, if he takes something he shouldn't he'll give it back when I ask but when left unattended one of our remotes met an unfortunate end... I'm not sure how to address this and create a 'default leave it' for items around the house. I'm working on IYC but having trouble with moderating the challenge and my expectations as I try and progress it beyond the basic level in Home School the Dog.

I was so excited to see a podcast about behaviour problems!! Yes, I would like to learn more about Tater’s journey! We got our puppy at 5.5 months old, just before all the obedience classes around here were shutdown. We did find other forms of training, but 4.5 months later, we still struggle with most of the behaviours you mentioned, and are also unable to get him to stop eating rocks, mulch, grass and soil. We’ve been doing the IYC from crate games, but can’t seem to transfer the value.

We have a prerequisite in our rescue program that adopters must sign up for HSTD. I was hoping you could have this same program integrating some of your video on rescue dogs and what to expect etc. We do have a handbook and such, but your videos are excellent. Thank you.

Thank you Susan! this is really good! My mistake is my dog is already 11 months old and i wish i got into your programs when i first got her... So i have to "un-do" many things that we had allowed her to do at home. Is it also applicable for dogs which are already at home for months? 😅 So many things i wish i started early. Finding you Susan has been amazing! We are still working on crate games and it has been a long process. but i'm keeping going! Is it hopeless for dogs that had already established some bad habits at home? How to factor in the adolescence behaviour?

Hi Susan. You mentioned chew-proof (or resistant?) dog beds/mats. How do I find something like that here in Canada? Our terrier mix puppy chews open every crate mat or doggy bed, and then eats both the stuffing and the outer fabric (even part of a zipper). He also shreds and eats towels and blankets. He hasn’t had any kind of bed/mat for the past month, and doesn’t nap well without it.

I came here just to say this, I was listening to the podcast in the car, and the police siren noise gave me a heart attack. - a brown trainer in texas I loved the rest of the video and tater salad sounds like my MILs english bulldog. Bulldogs are SO smart but people don't give them nearly enough credit.

My Zulli is a rescue, I’ve had her for just over 3 years. We do Recallers as Alumni, H360, very very behind but we do agility and love it even in Agility Nation. The one big problem we can’t seem to get over is food stealing when I’m not about. Yes we can do IYC, when I’m there and we’ve watched your Counter Surfing episode. BUT if I leave home, forget to lock pantry, leave food out even crumbs on counter or worse in accessible pockets that have had treats its disaster. Containers on floor, broken cups, torn pockets. It’s only food, not things. She is food driven, was very skinny when rescued apparently, found wandering the streets, at 10/12 no microchip but wearing a collar in fact two and not desexed. She has a great friendly nature, not reactive and except this one thing has been relatively easy to train. Any help?

I rescued a 2 month old puppy which is now 6 month old now we went through the honeymoon stage he was the sweetest pup we took him socializing to Wal-Mart a number of times then as he started getting older he started changing he doesn't like to socialize with other dogs or people and the biting doesn't stop. With me and my brother he's perfectly fine but with my mother he's always barking and trying to bite her. Please if you have any suggestions id appreciate it. I love your podcasts and learn a lot from them. But now I'm stuck

On a dog with known, demonstrated fear-triggered aggression behaviors, is socialization ideal or will this have the opposite effect? A dog we are about to care for barks and lunges at every new person. It is very startling because it appears to have no trigger, no eye contact or sound just suddenly he remembers the war or something. The prior foster's solution was to not have any people interact with the dog apart from them, resulting in reinforcing that behavior. However, it also isn't safe to meet people due to the animal's behavior. What issue do we address in what order?

Great tips here! The one thing I have not been able to stop is the body slamming like Tater used to do. I got my rescue at 2-3 years old and he's now 5 or 6. He'll body slam my adult sons when he's excited to see them. And doesn't seem to have proper dog play etiquette so I don't let him play with other dogs. What to do?

Susan, found your You Tube channel recently. I have a shelter rescued GSD, probably about six, been with me 3.5 years. She was in the shelter atmosphere about 7 months before being cleared for adoption. Although I didn't care for her "shelter name", I didn't change it because she had been used to it so long. Question, is it too late to change now? I would love to give her a more appropriate and appealing, to me anyway, name.
