Improving your drawing skill will improve your painting skill! Sketching your design on the surface prior to painting is a relatively quick and easy way to transfer an image. It is also a great way to work on your drawing skill!

Hi Trevor, I can draw, but found upside down drawing (turning the reference) helps you draw what you see rather than what your brain recognises it as. In my rush to get on with the airbrushing I prefer to project the image and draw the outline that way. Great advice as usual 👍🏻

Hey Kevin! The trick of turning your work upside down, sideways or looking at it in a mirror works well during the painting process as well, especially during those times when you might be struggling with a particular area. I can't fault you for being in a rush to get to the airbrushing part because I do the same thing my friend ; ).

Great to see someone who is promoting basic sketching skills. I see tons of airbrush work that shows that the artist has really good skills when it comes to airbrush control. But sometimes proportions are way off, especially when doing humans. Me, it's the other way around.. I can draw and paint using a paint brush, but to be honest, I am not very good with an airbrush. It is frustrating, but also part of why I started, I needed a challenge. And damn it is hard...

Hey Mattias! That's one of the cool things about the airbrush in my opinion, using other tools and resources in concert can have someone with absolutely no previous art experience or skill creating some pretty impressive pieces. Mastering the airbrush is just like anything else, it takes practice. It is hard, but it is worth it in the end!

Love your channel and been watching since the ur vid on using candy for hulk eye. I know your not a fan of doin true/realistic fire but if u can and have the time, would love to see you do the realistic fire and show how to use a fire reference for shapes of the flame licks and tieing them together. A basic understanding if u will of keeping the flow. I’m tryin to teach my niece but I suck at teaching and explaining things and why I do this or that and getting her to understand that less is more bc of the number of layers and not gettin to busy in the 1st or 2nd layer she has a hard time with the roadmap

Hey Ben! Thanks for the kind words and support my friend! It's not that I'm not a fan of doing "true fire" or realistic fire at all. I've actually planned to create some more of those videos for a while now, I just haven't had the time to get them done yet. Part of the issue has been coming up with a good way to explain everything in a way that is easy to follow and understand. I think I've finally come up with some good solutions on that end though. What I have in mind actually has me excited about the topic again. So, I'll get back to work on those videos soon.

Hey Dale! If I'm hand cutting a stencil I normally cut it over one of those self healing cutting mats. I prefer an X-Acto type knife with a number 11 blade. The key to avoiding rips while cutting is to keep plenty of fresh blades available and change them often. It doesn't take long to dull those blades and working with a dull blade tends to rip the material you're cutting rather than cut it cleanly.

What would you recommend sketching with on a black surface?

I've always used white chalk. It's easy to clean away, even after painting over it, and leaves no residue.
