How to Transfer Google Authenticator Accounts to a Different Device | No computer needed!

In this Quick Tech Tip we will be going over how to transfer Google Authenticator App accounts from one device to another without having to readd all of your accounts over again.
This is helpful if you get a new phone and want to move your Google Authenticator accounts over before factory resetting it. Transferring Google Authenticator Accounts to a secondary phone is also helpful so that way your 2FA accounts have a backup means of access.

@@christophertyrrell4018 I just tried to import the QR codes from 2021 and they worked so yes you could in theory save the QR codes for later. You would want to make sure to protect the QR codes though and if you add any new accounts to the authenticator app, the QR codes would not include any new accounts added after creation.

One more thing I thought should be mentioned, is if the codes don't match looking at your old device and your new device, its because on the new phone within the authenticator you need to select the Overflow button(3 dots)>Settings>Time correction for codes. This will update the codes based on the correct time from google servers and not from your phone. Thanks for your help btw, I didn't know it was gonna be this easy to transfer accounts.

Thanks for the video. On a shared computer, used by 2 different users, one person is going on a short out of town trip, needs to transfer the code to the other back up user, without removing it from the current user. Can this be done?

Using this method would allow that, they just select the account they want to transfer. Once done both phones would have the account.

You would uncheck the accounts you don't want from the screen shown at 0:55. So you would;d only have the accounts you want to transfer checked

A question I have--does this work if you are converting the authenticator from an old phone, to a new device with the same ph number? In other words, can I perform this process, and then port the same number with the other apps and data to the new phone? Or should I do them in a different order? Any advice on this is greatly appreciated! I'm not the most tech savvy person around. Thanks for all the helpful info!!

Sorry for the delay in response - the authenticator app is not tied to a phone number. The most important thing to remember is that you must move / backup your accounts prior to wiping your original phone. Following the process outlined in this video will make a copy of the accounts in the original authenticator app and place that copy on the new phone's authenticator app. Even if you transfer apps from old to new phone, you'll need to follow this process to get the accounts from the old phone onto the new phone. Also remember that following this process will not remove the accounts on the old phone so if you are giving the old phone away make sure to factory wipe it (after moving the authenticator accounts and verifying they work on the new phone).

The codes on the old device will stay on it as long as you do not delete them

Google authenticator does not require a SIM card. Should just need an Internet connection which can be accomplished via WiFi.

Yes! You would use this process to duplicate them to a second device.

Nope! The phone just needs a connection to the Internet (over WiFi is fine)

Question...I imported from an old phone to my new phone using the qr scan... however once I logged into the account the authenticator was for and enabled 2fa on the new phone it had be set up the key again and now I have 2 Google authenticator wit different codes for the same app...any idea why

Hmm that's odd, sounds like the transfer might not have worked. Do both codes work for logging in?

I have my Google Authenticator app 8 digit codes but my old phone is broken. Do these codes even help me at this point? Can I sync the accounts using these codes or do I need to start over? If I try to set up a new Authenticator account the system tells me I already have an account. Help!

You need your old phone to transfer accounts. Unfortunately you'll have to re-setup your accounts on your new device.

One more thing can we screenshot the two qr codes from the old phone and keep it somewhere safe Incase we lost the old phone so all I'm asking is do the code qr change?

Yes, however in the latest version of the app you aren't able to take screenshots (they are just a black screen when attempting). Instead you'd want to take clear pictures from your phone to save. I'd recommend making sure the QR code photos work before relying on them as a form of backup

I don't have the 3 dot menu in the top right hand. My Google Authenticator is on an old iPhone that hasn't had service in about 5-10 years and all I have is a + sign and a pen symbol in top right corner. Any help is appreciated.

Hmmmmmm I'm not sure honestly. There could be some timing involved where the qr codes don't work after a time period. I'll save a copy of mine and see if they work in a month because I'm curious now lol

my phone screen broke most of the pixels in the midle of the screen are dead i cant scan the qr code i try to screenshot it but it blocks the screenshot tried with screen mirroring on pc same black screen is there a way to show the qr code on a diffrent screen ?

Are you able to manipulate the window within the multitasking pane in such a way that you can scan the barcode while the app is shown? If you keep the app as the main selected app you might be able to drag it without the app screen going black. Not sure how bad your screen is damaged or the size of the screen so it may not work but worth a shot.

That will go away on its own. I think it stays for about a week after the transfer process is completed.

Switched from Microsoft to Google for this very reason. Backups should be easy to do, not a pain in the ass. And no I'm not going to backup to the cloud. That defeats the whole point of TOTP.

To my knowledge you need the phone with the accounts already setup to transfer them. Otherwise you have to try to recover the accounts directly.

That's an odd one. If you haven't tried I'd reboot your phone and see if that helps. Another option could be to maybe select only half of the accounts to transfer first and do the second half after. The accounts will stay on the original device until you delete them off or wipe the device.
