Today's video is all about how I use wax paper to transfer an image to wood. I show you a step by step tutorial starting with creating the image and then transferring it to the wood. I use an Inkjet printer for this project. In this video I use Picmonkey to create my image for the transfer. Below I have posted an affiliate link for a free trial. Kendra Garvais I always print on the glossy side. The Reynolds wax paper almost feels the same on both sides. If your using that brand then it should work fine on either side.

Thanks Shelly. I use Reynolds wax paper and both sides look about the same to me. But yes, I would print on the shiny side.

Is there such a thing as white ink? If transferring to black ebony wood using black mink won't work well especially when desiring to do intricate routing work. Any reply appreciated. Your very pleasant to watch and listen to. You also got to the point without wasting viewers time which is much appreciated.

The cutting board is just for decoration. I would not use water on it.

You still want the ink to be wet or it will not transfer after it’s dried.

The paper I used was pretty much the same on both sides. I would say it probably depends on the brand you use. I would print on the waxy side.

This technique only works with an ink jet printer.

What does pic monkey charge now? Is there still a free version? When you need two things the same, like the line, can you duplicate and paste? Lastly, if I use white ink will it be pretty muted with this technique?

This is awesome. Especially for those of us that don't have cricket. Just a f/u for when you load the wax paper into printer. My paper sits at the bottom of printer. Any tips suggestions how I can get it under the rollers? I know that is a super specific question and not all printers are the same. ☺️

Not really sure. I know that when I load the paper in to mine I press the rollers up so the paper slides in better. Are you able to press up on the rollers at all?

I tape the edges of my wax paper to a piece of 8.5x 11" cardstock. Seems to work well.

Polycrylic is a good sealer. It comes in a bunch of different finishes as well. I would not recommend using it as a cutting board after though. This piece is just to be as decor.

I’ve never tried this method with a laser printer but I don’t think it works the same. Also, I’ve been printing on wax paper for a long time and have not had any issues with my printer. 🙂

I do transfer it fairly quick but it doesn’t have to be immediate. You just still want your ink to be wet.

Hi, This is a great idea. I have an Epson Workforce printer that uses pigment ink cartridges. Will this type of printer and cartridge work with the process in your video?

I would wait a while to make sure the ink is totally dry. It would use a clear spray sealer.

I’ve never waited a long time after printing, but I would think the ink would dry and wouldn’t transfer very well if at all. I’m not 100% on that.

You don’t have to immediately, but I wouldn’t wait to long or your ink will start to dry.

This will only work with ink printer. There are different methods for laser printers I just do not own one.!

Thanks! Make sure your wax paper doesn’t have any crinkling and feed the paper in under the rollers before printing. I hope that helps.

You can also use double-sided tape at the top of a piece of printer paper to attach your wax paper. Then trim your waxed paper to fit printer paper. Print with the appropriate side up or down according to which side your printer prints on. My inkjet printer prints on the side facing UP. Carefully remove the printed wax paper from the printer paper without smudging it. Now you are ready to transfer the print to your wood piece. Smooth wood works best.

You want to do it soon after printing. As long as the ink is still wet it should transfer.

I’m not sure about the post cards. I’ve never tried it, but if you do try it I’d love to know if it worked. You do not need to use Picmonkey to reverse your image. If you have the paint program on a computer just flip image horizontally.

I'm interested in trying something like this to make Christmas tree ornaments on wood slices with Vacation Bible School kids. So we would need a lot of these, printed in advance. I'm not sure the logistics will work. Does the transfer have to be used immediately, while it's wet? Does it ever dry if printed on waxed paper? If it has to be wet, I'm not sure we could print it on the spot; if it never dries, I'm not sure we could print it in advance and not have it ruined before we use it. Any thoughts?

I have never tried using parchment paper so I’m not sure if it will work or not. Could be with a try if that’s all you have on hand. I’d love to know the results if you try it out. 🙂

This piece is just a decoe piece to be displayed. It is not to be used with food.

It is a good idea to seal it. This is just a decor piece, not for actual use.

Is this ink safe from smudging due to washing? Just asking for the the application of wood. I plan on using this method to stencil onto cardstock.

The ink will smudge while it’s still wet. Once the ink has dried it should not smudge.The cutting board is meant to be displayed as a decor piece only, not for actual use.

The wax paper I used is regular wax paper. You can purchase it in the area that sells food storage bags.

What printer do you use? I need to get an inkjet printer for crafting. I want to be able to print on wax paper, freezer paper and fabric. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I was using a cheap HP inkjet 1000 that I probably had for 10 plus years but it finally quit working. I just got a Cannon TS3322 and I love it so far. It is also an inkjet printer and was really inexpensive $30 from Walmart. It is a printer, copier and scanner. I have not tried using it on fabric yet. I hope this helps. 🙂

How long does the ink last on the wood? And if you’re staining the wood is this done before or after.

I painted the wood first then did the transfer. It’s been years since I’ve done this projects and the ink is still going strong. Obviously this is a decor piece and not for actual use.

Just an inkjet printer will work for this project.

Does the ink have to be wet or freah out of the printer

I wouldn’t let the ink dry down to much or it won’t transfer.

Really awesome! Did you use a ink jet printer? And do you know if Canva would work? And how would I rotate the image I don't have paint in my Mac

Yes, I used an inkjet printer. I think Canva should work. There should be a tab somewhere that says flip. You want to flip the image horizontal. I hope that made sense and helps!
