This is so useful!! I was last week for the first time on a fiddle session in Germany. We don't learn fiddle here normally. I learned classical violin. And I was completely lost at the session😂 I always told everyone "but if I had sheets, no problem!! I could play everything;" ....but I hadn't...and nobody had ...and they all played so confidently and nicely, even if their bow movements were "completely wrong" for a classical violinist. It was a really interesting experience and I really have to dive into the fiddle world to be able to participate with ease on the next session..thank you so much!!

Great lesson. I’m a mandolin player who just got a fiddle. There are only classical teachers in my town and I’m wondering about the pros and cons of learning my basics from a classical tutor?

Hi, Alex. Classical teaching is a great way to pick up the fundamentals of the instrument. Get some good groundwork in place as far as technique, and then come over to the dark side!! Or do both in tandem!

Hi, JD. At 7:40, that's definitely Whiskey Before Breakfast. You can see Fiddlevideo instructor Casey Willis teach the tune here: www.fiddlevideo.com/whiskey-before-breakfast-fiddle-lesson/ The tune at 9:40, is too short for us to tell...anybody else out there recognize it??

The vibrato being a more rhythmic element makes PERFECT sense. I'm a beginner and haven't gotten that far but I grew up in Texas and having uncles who fiddled, it is or was, dance music. When you have a gathering and out comes a fiddle or two, and possibly guitar, the cornmeal follows very shortly afterward. There are no drums or percussion so the fiddle provides the rhythm, in one way or another throughout the song. Heaven forbid the lose of the beat while one is in the middle of a waltz, polka or schottische.
