The thing I love about plants/trees, is that they are very resilient and forgiving. If you don’t like where they are, move them. If you don’t like their size, trim them. Great job. Everything looks great.😊👏🏼👏🏼

Your husband is a hero and he must love you lots & lots! That was a lot of work to put into moving a tree he hates :-) I moved a redbud in March, same sort of size, but I brutalized it a lot more (ie it was almost a bareroot by the time I got it out of the soil) and it survived. You guys did a fabulous job of keeping the rootball intact so I am sure your tree will make it.

And P.S. screw the hater comments, 9 times out of then those people live in apartments and don't even have a garden let alone a container full of herbs. Nurseries fail to do an important and simple thing to avoid losing trees to shock. They fail to flag the south side of the tree before they dig it up. If you flag the south side of the tree before you dig it up and are careful to keep that orientation when you plant it you will suffer a lot fewer deaths due to shock. ..

The timing of your video couldn't be more perfect. I have been avoiding moving a newly planted apple tree (earlier this spring) to allow more space for future growth of a 'Limelight' Hydrangea I purchased several weeks ago. It should be fairly easy given how recently I planted it. Our weather has finally turned a corner, in the 70s this week here in zone 4 b. Your "small tree" seemed pretty big after 5 hours of digging, right? Oh my word. I absolutely love your Redbud tree. The shape is beautiful and the multi-stems are so interesting. I bought a Redbud tree several years ago when it was little more than a switch. I've neglected it so the shape is odd. There's been dieback so it now has multiple stems. Mine is in the shade. I love the heart-shape leaves and the amazing color in the spring. Did you add some Bio-tone to the planting hole? Was that a pipe I saw? Scary to run into power or gas lines when digging. I'm curious why your husband kept adding dirt under the tree. Was that to help elevate it out of the hole so it wasn't a back breaker to lift out? Again, I think my tree move should go pretty well that I can handle it alone. I hope so.
@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 3 жыл бұрын
Kate, Yes, the "small tree" project turned into a huge deal (in my eyes) after 2 hours of digging lol My hubby started by digging the root ball around the tree carefully, then, he started to lift it slowly by adding soil underneath it to elevate the root ball, since the new place was just feet away, we wanted to just roll the root ball into the new hole, at the very end, you can see where he dug out a very small trench to sorta help us with the last push, that thing was HEAVY! I did not add any soil amendments when I first planted this tree last year and I didn't either this time. That pipe was carrying power cables ( we think ) to our garage, our home is a fixer upper so we are slowly getting to know this place finding little surprises like that.

My husband and I just transplanted a redbud that was right next to the house. I’m talking the football was 3 feet away from the cement to our basement so we had no other choice but to move it. I almost broke the shovel when trying to use leverage to loosen it up. Too bad I didn’t think if backfilling or planks. Then my husband came to help and just tore the roots apart. No matter how nuch I said “it needs those roots” he just kept rocking it and cutting the roots and pulling. Completely bare foot with barely any roots when we moved it downhill away from the house. Fingers crossed but I don’t have high hopes, so I’m looking up other redbuds to buy and put in its place when it prices to be dead next spring. Sometimes I wish my husband would listen to me. Like the short weeping Cherry tree needing to be closer to the garden as An accent plant, but instead it’s in the middle of the front yard. Question: what was the pipe running through the new hole that you dug? Was that water? Gas? Is it okay since it’s so close to the surface? Thank you for the video and ideas!!

Let me ask you. How long ago did you plant this tree on this spot? (the first spot). I have two redbud trees that I planted early this spring. (Spring 2020) but I already think that they need to be move a few feet here and there, practically I have the same issue you have . So I wanted to know how long has your tree been in this spot? The root ball of your tree looks pretty big to me. My trees have just one straight single trunk each and when we first plant them the root ball was less than half of your tree’s tooth ball. I just want to kind of determine how much work I (Well....my husband) has ahead of him. Your tree looks gorgeous.... I wish and hope it continues this way...have faith. I know what it is to love a tree. 🙏🏼🌿

Hi Bibi, I planted this tree in its original spot last year in the fall-ish, (2019) so it has been there for about a year now, you are right, we decided to grab as much of the rootball as possible to make it less stressful on the tree, that is why is so big but we could have gone half that size and still be ok. The single stem ones are probably easier to move ( not an expert thou) especially if yours has not seen a winter in that spot, I would start digging a bit bigger from what you(or he) is thinking, and go from there. Good luck!

Thank you for letting us know that your redbud didn't survive after replanting it, that is probably a risk of any tree that gets moved. I have a redbud twice that size and am willing to take the risk, I notice that the roots individually are not huge in diameter and redbuds are indigenous to this region. I wouldn't have known to backfill while digging and one person suggested to mark South on the tree and replant it with the same directional orientation.
@myfirstnamemylastname2994
@myfirstnamemylastname2994 7 ай бұрын
I have one just that size I would like to transplant but have learned that a water line runs straight through the root ball so alas it is going to have to go. But for those who have hope I have learn from other videos that you can increase the chances more than 50% that your Redbud will survive if you transplant it in late winter. It loses list moisture through the leaves and it doesn't go through as much shock and it has time to develop new rootlets before it has to Leaf out and make flowers.

The tree did not make it, the 1 trunk that survived was infected by something... the center was rotting 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I was super sad about it for a bit but I’m over it now.

Just a thought to make it easier; why not rent a ditch witch to save time, muscle aches, etc. The roots alone would be worth it + then to dig new hole for tree. Just 🤔

This is the very definition of high maintenance. The title of this show should be a day in the life with my high maintenance wife… That’s a whole day of fishing right there… I would’ve either hired someone to do it, or would have said no… Honey, do you remember that sycamore tree I planted last year, we’re going to need to move it 3 feet over here… If I’m going to do it, my wife is going to be nude while I’m doing it… That’s just me… Let’s hope she’s got something real special because this is going to require quite a few deep digs to make up for this one…
