That's gonna be funny, my friends know me as the bike crack but have never seen me with anything but normal bikes. I will not tell them at all and one day simply show up on the unicycle. It's gonna be great fun!

G’day Ed. I have viewed a lot of your videos & admire your achievements. For my 61st birthday I ordered myself a 24” unicycle. Yesterday was day 9 of practice & I got to 2 wheel revolutions before coming off. I figure if you can ride around the world I should be able to ride up the street and back.

I have a 26 inch uni. Just after I completed your series I picked up my birthday and Christmas money and bought one. After that I sat in my backyard for a week and taught myself off of videos. After that and with a little help from my sisters pick-up, I could ride pretty freely. A few feet a few yards and down and back up the street. After that it was just concentrating on free mounting. And after a week I had that. I would say my only draw back was the bruising and soreness between the legs and everything. But it was well worth it.

Hey Ed ! An other option about finding paneer. There is Vaude who made some decent panier for Unicycle. They are the Vaude "Off road M & S" That's what I used for my Tour and it did the job quite well. It is not as good as cary cray set up, but as I have only short amount of time to prepare my trip, it fulfilled my needs very well. Such a great video as usual. I wish I had this video five months ago when I started my own unicycle tour. Unicycle touring is such a roller coaster but the reward worth the challenge. And as you say, being on a unicycle create to much genuine connection. On my trip, I had someone inviting my on his plane just because he was amazed by my unicycle. Thanks you so much for the inspiration you brought me to start my own unicycle tour this summer. And now I am super excited to edit my trip and share it with the community. The first video will be online tonight on my youtube channel. :D

In these restricted times I decided to take the plunge and learn to unicycle, one of the motivations was the fact that everyone was indoors not so many would see me falling off. October now and I am wobbling along on the 26inch wheel, still falling off just not as often. I cycle a lot but I was amazed at how different it is to cycling I am lovingly it. It is a real ice break I get nothing but support from people seeing me practice. I will be looking forward to you how to unicycle series for more tips

Not just a massive BRAVO for your incredible achievements here, but also a huge thank you for producing these high quality videos for us - the quality is truly exceptional and you really are a natural at presenting. As for why I might want to travel on a unicycle, well as a road biker who took long enough to come to terms with using cleats I can't begin to imagine even trying one - but chapeau! to you nonetheless :)

Well Ed you've finally done it. Pushing me over the edge to finally take my uni out overnight tomorrow. Got some of Cary's bags earlier this summer and finished building my fender 2 months ago. Commute using the bags 10+ miles every day, so I'm ready. At the very least you can know this video is the one that finally did it for me, not that your adventures weren't the motivation already. Wow this is very cool. I ride an electric unicycle and my wheel the nikola plus can go 40mph. And I use a 16 inch tire. The bigger Euc’s are 18” 20” and 22” so 36” sounds insane to me. I love how u toured around the whole world, so badass man. I’d like to try to learn the unicycle bikes now thx for the video

It occurred to me today that someone's bound to design a Segway-like electric unicycle. It's bound to happen, if it hasn't already. (And I don't mean the fully electric ones you simply stand on.) Something that works with the rider in helping with balance, but that works in association with the rider. Electric and balance assist. It would be an interesting project to try at least. Then again, it would weight a ton and you'd have the battery issue - once it's dead, you'd be hard-pressed to ride the thing.

When I first discovered your videos I thought I might like to do it but once I watched a bunch of them I knew better. I'll stick to my regular bicycle thank you. Last summer I rode around Japan on a folding bike. I liked that, the downsides to having that type of bike were offset by it's plusses.

Great video, Thanks! I found though that you can begin with one wheel then add a second one right behind it... then a bafang hub motor and big lithium bromide battery.. that allows you to carry more items and go up hills a lot easier. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about a Unicycle Grand Tour but I've definitely been inspired for some kind of big tour. I've ridden a 29" for hour long trips comfortably enough to know that anything further or for longer isn't for me.

Hi Ed! I watched all of your round the world 🌎 videos & am catching up on some others. You inspired me to get a uni. It arrived 2 days after the entire US shut down because of the zombie 🧟 viral apocalypse. I haven't learned to ride it but I'm not giving up. I'm more of bicycle riding & touring grrl! Hi Ed, great stuff after your adventure which I enjoyed from beginning to end. Two things that I saw that you battled with were bum sores and tire punctures. What would you differently now after your experiences wirh those challenges? What makes for a good seat and how to reduce or eliminate problems with tire punctures? There is a guy near me who is getting into the touring unicycle he is going the older bag on back style at least from what I have seen or he has been seen with modified standard panier holders for his bike, but he had a larger cycle at 26 inch that is the smallest size used for distance cycling now as of the 1990's and 2000's when the bigger cycles came about. He started with a 20 inch and now has a 26 with the lightweight steel frame where the whole bike is that lightweight steel once used for touring standard bikes or some old style racing MTB steel frame. I have not seen him in a while, maybe he moved or is actually touring. I live in South Dakota Pierre, pronounced Pier as people who live here call it.

I have a 16 inch uni but the cranks kind of broke then I looked for a different one and I thought what you were doing so I got a 24 inch uni. I wanted to do trial stuff like going to the skatepark but I thought about it so now its actually fun just riding long distances with the unicycle. did you get your unicycle from a website called unicycle.com because I saw the same one you use.

I haven't got a 32" yet (damn pandemic) but I am so tempted to buy the panier set now... Quick question for Ed; have you known of anyone attaching a trailer to the back of a uni? My son wants to go out riding with me every time I head out but he's too small to ride solo currently...

I did it for short ride, but I just hold the trailer with my hand. If the trailer is light it is ok, but as soon as you bring some weight or ride up hill, it just feel like you don't have enough grip on the road with one wheel to pull the trailer. And if you attached it to the uni, then I feel it kind of loose the concept of ridding uni, as it just become a tricycle, and you don't hold the balance by yourself.

while interesting I still think two wheeled riding is best, you can go faster with less fatigue and hold more stuff or pull more stuff. that is just to much work using one wheel. I dont see the point but if your happy with it fine,and if it gives you a money making niche that is fine too

Ed, I have to ask - Did you ever rotate your tire around the wheel? In the US, that hole you got in your tire made me think maybe you kept the tire about the same, and mounting the same way wore down individual spots more quickly than others. Regardless, I love the video, I'm getting a bit older, but I'm always thinking about trying something like this. The adventure, fun, and suffering, are all what I crave.

I am aiming to cycle from lands end to John o groats next year, however I am not sure where to stay, as I'm only 15, most hotels and campsites will not let me in. Any advice on how to overcome this?

Wow that's super young! Good on you, but remember to be safe. The world is pretty scary and travelling on a unicycle alone can be a scarier situation if your not prepared. I'm going on 30 and I'm going to travel across my country of Canada next year on my 36 and I am a bit concerned for safety. Be careful and maybe see if you can find some people to ride with.

Wildcamping ist the one way to overcome this. Maybe warmshowers is also a way. Good luck on your trip!

Just awesome.. Why is it that all unicycle you must paddle all the time and doesn't have the same mechanism as bikes?

Having the direct control of the wheel is essential to balance. If there was a freewheel mechanism, and the wheel got ahead of your body, you would have some difficulty slowing the wheel down to get the uni back under you. When you're riding, you're pretty much constantly adjusting the speed of the wheel along with your weight shift. You could do it with a freewheel and some brakes, but it wouldn't be as good as having a direct connection from your legs to the wheel.

Man riding unicycles is so expensive. Been riding since I was 9 and am now 25 and its so disappointing because entry level unis are so cheap and as a kid I could just buy a cheap $40 uni and it was perfect. Now I am older and bigger and really wanting a bigger and better uni, especially a touring one because it would be so nice to do a small scale version of what you did, I would love to travel Australia like that. But man it would cost me almost $3000 AUD just for the uni and gear. Maybe one day in the far future but I've never been able to justify to incredibly high cost of being a unicycle enthusiast. Weird situation too, can't think of anything else where the barrier to entry is so so small/cheap but as soon as you break out of the budget offerings it's all expensive as hell. I just feel as though there is no middle ground it's either budget as heck or premium Apple product pricing.

You think unicycling is bad? What about bicycling! You can get a bike for free but once you get into in $3 grand gives you something mid teir both are expensive most hobbies are easy to get into but expensive if you want the best

Ed: Wouldn't it be easier on a geared unicycle with a smaller wheel? Lower height means less wind resistance, easier to mount and easier to store unicycle.

A smaller geared uni is harder to ride. It is more expensive, more twitchy, more sensitive to bumps, has friction in the gearing and not as mechanically reliable as a simple 36er.

@@jimthode I take your points but we've been travelling on 26" wheels with geared hubs on bikes for decades; I'm sure the technology is there. Just looks so inefficient to be that high up on a 36er.

@@sab611 Those are 26" geared-hub wheels on BICYCLES. Completely different scenario which Jim explained pretty clearly. Apparently, you don't understand that "more twitchy, more sensitive to bumps, has friction in the gearing" has MUCH more effect on a unicycle. (And to be honest, you do realize that mountain biking has abandoned the 26" wheel size in favor of the 29" and 27.5", right? "Better at rolling over stuff" is the reason - and again, this reason is used for a BICYCLE!) I've been riding all manner of wheels on bicycles for 48 years in all terrain, wet, dry, sand, tandem, etc. and I can still barely ride unicycle over driveway bumps! Ride on grass? Nope. No way. Granted, I'm not really planning on mountain unicycling, but it would be nice to get SOME bumpy stuff down. I'm not there yet and I'm sure others can learn it faster (Seth at Berm Peak for example), but I've decided to work on other skills instead. Either way, Jim provided a pretty good answer that you quickly disregarded. Perhaps go learn to unicycle and then let us know how you feel.

My first real unicycle!(first one was a cheap plastic one as a kid kzfaq.infoUgkx4e2fa6x27dF7shCelntq0ZIKt4N0jELI I never learned to ride)So, this is a true learner, and for a C note, exactly what was needed. After a few weeks, I'm able to easily ride up and down the street. The Good: Solid frame. Has absorbed numerous spills through learning and still solid. Look - great looks, after 6 weeks of bashing Weight - it's really all tire, but as I fall I can easily grab the seat so it doesn't slam the ground. Size - Very adjustable. I'm 6', 33" inseam. I put it mostly up, but could go a bit higher if I needed to. The Bad: Not sure if it's out of the norm, but seat got scraped up quickly. Pedals - they are a bit uncomfortable and I can't get the right feel on my feet. But, they are solid and haven't been damaged at all as I've seen in reviews on other cycle's.- To address one comment about the seat connection not straight. Huh? Seat is on a round pole, you just turn it and it's straight. Either of the bad I expected to replace once I improved. I'd recommend to anyone else in the learning phase.
