Such good tips. I had landed a couple tres before watching, but lacked consistency. The tip about having my backfoot feeling more of the edge and keeping pressure on the edge has dramatically made me land 3/5 now! Stoked

Men .... I wish I was a kid in 2023. Having slow-motion closeup youtube tutorial video's on how to do tricks is crazy. When I was young, in 2000, you had no information at all, only magazines with some pictures. At that time you just needed to go guess how the trick was done or learn from somebody else. I am 35 now, and maybe I will start skating again, why not.

Quality content, love the emphasis on foot placement, weight distribution, shoulder / head alignment and pressure plus release. A lot of trick tip videos completely gloss over these points but the basics of physics make tricks much easier to visualize and correct for. Can't wait till you start talking about ledge / rail tricks.

Skating on and off for 20 years, I've always had to relearn 360 flips every spring, and would do them differently each year. Yours are great! I find it makes a huge difference how rough the ground is. The popping one, with the slight delay in the scoop, works better for rough ground ime, while in a smooth skatepark I'll sometimes try to do em with as little pop as possible. One thing I've found to help when learning any flip trick, but 3 flips in particular: once you've figured out the basic technique, think less about the scooping and flicking but focus all your attention on putting your feet where they need to be on landing. Maybe also do it with less force, or extending your legs less and just focus on landing on it. Sounds obvious, I know, but one reason why people bail flips is because they're just not doing it fast enough, and then they start to unconsciously set up to bail.

Hey Tom! I've been seeing your clips in my IG feed for a while now and just saw this one. Big inspiration and motivator to get out there and keep trying. I've been a skateboarder for 17 years, 10 of those years being active with the last few years being my comeback at 33 yrs old. I've always had a diversity of tricks in my bag but always struggled with tres. I've watched probably every tutorial and taken advice from just about anyone offering but to no avail. It's always, "it's all in the scoop, all in the backfoot, etc," but I know it's much more than that. Even Aron Kyro's tutorial with his take on jumping straight up after you pop and scoop, while very insightful has not solved my problem. I've never quite heard it explained like this, the way you do. Particularly about keeping your backfoot on the tip of the corner edge, and more specifically NOT having your shoe on the grip for the most part. I believe this might be where I am having issues as I might be trying to grip my feet around the entirety of the corner but on the top corner of the grip with my feet flat instead of the outer edge of the plys hanging slightly 'off.' I've also never heard anyone go into depth about the facing direction, particularly the diagonal and slightly leaning over the edge you face aspect. Though that's how I naturally keep my upper body as it feels the most comfortable. Very insightful. A big skate inspiration I had growing up once told me to 'study' skateboarding; every position, rotation, and tweak it with trial and error until you understand how it works. You certainly remind me of that person with how much you've studied the nuances of the board. I can't wait to give this a try, it looks promising. Thanks so much for the vids!

So, I started skating 25 years ago, haven’t really done it since about 2009. But in all that time skating I couldn’t land a damn tre-flip. I can switch no-comply a tre-flip, which looked impressive and made me a 1 trick pony at the skate park, but 360 flips always alluded me. But I realised that basically my back foot (goofy left foot) just isn’t up to what my dominant right foot can do and I went down the path of pressure flips, avoiding anything with pop except for Ollie’s when I needed them. BUT, thanks to your video I think the late scoop is where I was going wrong all that time ago, and I’m getting the old set-up out to try it. Will update if this 35 yo can finally tre-flip and move on 😅

Greetings Tom, thanks for sharing your awesome tips and knowledge, for the slightly older skaters (30's and onward) could you share your pre and post skating stretching/warm up/cool down routine? Also any tips on stretching/core building/non skating exercise/muscle strengthening you can recommend would be awesome.
@toms_tutorials
@toms_tutorials Жыл бұрын
Of course! I like to do active warm-ups like swinging each leg in a forward and backward motion as well as side to side, and anything that isn't a static stretch. I've heard from many that static stretches can be harmful to do before you're warmed up. I like to do lunges as well to warm up my knees. I'm not an expert though and know that there is much better advice out there. Check out 'Old Friends Fitness' on this page! kzfaq.info/love/hs1KOBryHuue-5-JTq_pCg It's catered toward skateboarders.

@toms_tutorials
@toms_tutorials Жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam! This is a tricky one because every trick is so different. For example, some tricks you catch with your front foot and others with your back foot. The best thing you can do for all tricks is to be bent down and well balanced before you pop. That will help you stay consistent.

Would you recommend learning tre flips in fakie first? It seems to look a lot more like a good rotation/spin when I try them fakie, but I’m still really inconsistent with my attempts in my normal stance… my board tends to shoot out from under me. Either way I have yet to land a clean one. guess it’s time to put in some work 😤🤙🏽 thanks for the tips!
@toms_tutorials
@toms_tutorials Жыл бұрын
For some people fakie is easier to learn first as they require less pop/snap, so if they're working better for you there's nothing wrong with learning them before regular tres. If you want them regular though, really focus on the snap!

@toms_tutorials

Of course! And yes, exactly! You have to put as MUCH weight as you can on your back foot, all the while monkey gripping the tail. I like to lift my heel up so I can put even more weight down on my toes. Hope that helps.

You scoop back and at an angle toward the direction you're moving. Having all that pressure on that back edge of the tail really helps give you a combined pop and scoop. In regards to hopping, I would hop straight up.
