For redness 1 - centella 2 - niacinamide 3- Azelaicacid 4- allantoin For hyperpigmentation 1- sunscreen 2- aha, when not so oily and acne got resolved 3- tranexamic acid 4- tyronase inhibitors = kojic acid, alpha arbutin, licorice root extract 5- vit c = not so holygrail, in addition to other ingredients it work fine 6-retinol / retinoids 7- azelaic acid 8- hydroquionone with breaks For hypopigmentation 1- in office treatment, steroids 2- latese For scars / textured skin Take 18 months to 24months 1- microneedling with prp 2- microneedling with rf but by an expert 3- tca for icepick scars 4- subcision with right and small amount of filler 5- fraxel laser, co2 laser None of these work alone Hypertrophic scars 1-Steroid injection 2-Silicone 3- vbeam laser At last I am feeling bad due to acne scars 💔 maybe accepting them is the best option

Hang in there. I suffered acne in the 70's when there were no effect treatments. I am going to save up for some sort of in office treatment to hopefully minimize my uneven texture due to scarring.

I completely agree about Microneedling. During the years I have tried almost everything to resolve my acne scars and look younger, anything from face exercises (That's for sagging), vitamin C serum, Fraxel, collagen supplements and of course Retin A (7 years straight). However, nothing made any real difference compared to the high-quality derma pen I purchased for under 100 bucks. Within 3 months of use, my skin has improved DRAMATICALLY. Acne scars from childhood gone by 90% which was the main reason I started doing it however, that's not the only benefit, My fine lines have disappeared completely, and my nasolabial folds are way less prominent. I don't look like I'm in my 20s again, but definitely not 56 either. People often underestimate the power of wounding and the revolutionary effects it can have on the skin.

+1 for kora beauticaIs. I've been doing microneedling since it started 12 or so years ago. Nobody believe I am 55. They all say I am in my 30's or early 40's. As you know, as we get old, our skin gets thinner therefore creating wrinkles. But the wounding kept my skin still thick and youthful. Your comment will help so many women to restore their skin..

Ditto on the subject of texture 🎉 I have little, if any, estrogen in my body. I’m noticing that the texture of my forehead seems to be getting a little “rough” … not scars, not acne (but some of them look like they could be popped(kinda a sorta) and am wondering if this could be caused by lack of estrogen. It’s really starting to bug me because I’ve always been blessed with good skin.❤😮❤

After microneedling, peelings for two box acne scars, i decided to take an operation to get the scars removed in hope they would recover better. Unfortunately the scar got bigger and my skin texture didnt improve. Please be carefull with threatments, and check your mental health before undergoing any kind of treatment. It causes a lot of mental health issues if it doesnt work out and you only have skin. Be carefull💖

I honestly recommend just going on accutane. I had acne from 10 -29. Accutane was the only thing that worked. I experienced clear skin for basically the first time in my life. I really wish I’d gone on it sooner and not been so afraid of it. I didn’t realize how much of the marking on my skin was permanent until I stopped getting pimples.

I used Accutane when I turned 30 (I’m now 60) and it definitely did clear up the acne for good. My skin, nose, eyes became very dry, red and uncomfortable and there was some nasty purging that left a few mild indented scars but no real texture. These side effects could have been much less had I been given instructions on how to care for my skin while on the medication. Looking back, if I had been given the option, I would have used prescription tretinoin first. I’ve had some professional micro needling which has made some improvement.

best way: moisturise and sunscreen. my holy grail is a lightweight moisturiser ( i use invity microemulsion ) and then i use spf 50 sunscreen! try not to use any harsh acids if it is active. stay away from tret, or retinol or retinoid. focus on healing acne first and then the scarring. it is hard to do both at the same time.

I will start saving my money for an in-office treatment (microneedling, laser, etc.) I had my acne as a teenager in the 1970's and there were little to no treatments. They used to put me into something like a tanning booth! Thanks so much for giving me dark spots, with no positive effect on my acne. 🤷‍♀️ 😖 😢

Dr., would you ever do a video about first aid and skincare for people with dermatillomania? I don’t see many qualified professionals talking about the skincare aspect of this condition. I’m in therapy for the psychological part, but I wish I knew what to do after I did some bad picking at my skin to help wounds heal and avoid scarring/hair loss while also dealing with the increased sensitivity . By the way, this video is INCREDIBLE! thank you so much. Saving for future reference and taking notes.

I'm in my 40. Took me 30yrs to find out what I'm doing wrong to get acne. Over 10yrs now of no more acne just mini red scars. What I did that works: It all comes down to what you consume. Stay away from bad oil specially hydrogenated oil like vegetable oil; dary products and process food. (Read your food labels of ingredients) Stay hydrate, exercise and eat clean. Check your liver. Clean your colon. Clog colon leads to build up of toxins coming out to the surface. (Look it up) All the products will only help from the outside but the main cause is within. I pray for everyone get theough this stressful battle. Keep fighting and never give up!

Could you put together both an OTC and a Rx version of an ideal week of a hyperpigmentation routine? Having all these ingredient and product recommendations are cool, but when and how to use them all within a routine is overwhelming. Maybe like a “skin cycling for hyperpigmentation” detailing which ingredients can/should be used twice a day, which ingredients synergize vs which should be used on separate days, and then example routines for each day of the week with products and how you’d layer them!

Hi Dr.Idriss. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Could you please make a video how to address comedons (open and closed) when you have a hypersensitivity skin. My skin clogging worsens when I use salicylic acid, my skin isn’t oily and acids dry it out even more.

Thank you Doc! Got to tell you that I am one of those rare unicorns 🦄 with good skin 😊 I’m in my mid 50s and have always moisturized myself but it has only been a year of using SPF daily and a face care routine & I can see the difference in my fine lines 😊 I am 2nd generation Polish and Turkish…my question is do deep dimples cause extra wrinkles? TYSVM 💖🙏☮️

thank you. I suffered from horrible cystic acne and had to do three courses of Accutane over a period of about 20 years. I’ve been using tretinoin nine often on, but consistently over the last five years. I stopped producing excess amount of oil and getting acne at about age 42 and I’m now almost 47. The scars have improved, although they are still extremely visible. I have both types. They are mainly in the areas where a man would grow a beard, lol I am thinking about going to a cosmetic dermatologist, and I am going to show them this and ask them about each type oftreatment

I could have written this! Accutane 3 times over 20 yrs as well. Each time it was great for about 7 yrs: I’m 56 and Still get the odd cyst that scars…it’s so frustrating

Hi, Dr. Idriss! How do you feel about La Roche-Posay’s latest ingredient Melasyl? Their claims are pretty promising, do you think they’re superior to other anti-pigmentation ingredients in the market?

Old little Lebanese nerd here. I look much younger than my 60+ years but the box car scars on my cheeks have always made me self conscious. Acne scars more than just your skin. So I'm intrigued by the post below. I've used Tretenoin on and off for many years and have really seen no difference. So I'm going to order one and try it. Hopefully it works as well for me as Daniellemcdd states below.

"Exfoliate skin with glycolic acid 3 times a week." Can I know which one Dr. Idriss does or which one gets better efficacy for hyperpigmentation? To exfoliate every other night for 3 times a weeks or continuous 3 nights? I use retinol the other nights. THANK YOU!🙏

I am not an acne girl and never been one when I was a teen BUT I did experience few pimples throughout my 20s (few breakouts) and 1-3 of them turned into a red spot. So I believe you don't need to have had a face full of acne for years to develop few acne marks, just one pimple can become a mark. Also, I am the type who seriously enjoys to pop them so don't do that since it"s majorly because of that it can leave a nice mark 😉

Hello. I love your content. I have learned so many things from you. I have 2 questions: - are there ingredients that you can not use on tattoos? Or are there ingredients that are recommended for tattooed skin? Except spf :) - which are the ingredients that you have to take a break from? For ex: i can use tranexamic acid for eternity or i have to use it 2 months and then take a break? Or retinol, glycolic acid? I imagine antioxidants can be use without taking a break but actives? Please excuse my english 😢.

Please do another video on exfoliant acids and what order to use them in especially advice for long time users of Tretinoin. I have occasionally, at night, used Tretinoin, waited 20 min then used 5% glycolic acid serum, wait 30 min. and then moisturizer with no problems; but is this ok? I am still having trouble with Milia.

I started developing acne when I was 11 years old, and I am now 21. From ages 17-20 I used prescribed tretinoin and benzoyl peroxide with clindamycin. I developed a reaction to the benzoyl peroxide prescription, so I stopped using it, but I now have blackheads and cystic acne again. My pores are very large, and I would assume I have oily skin because of the blackheads, but my skin is really dry even with moisturizing. I have tried La Roche Posay effaclar duo and it is not irritating like my prescription when buffered with moisturizer, but it has not been effective on my pimples or blackheads. I have also used Paulas Choice Salicylic Acid exfoliator a few times a week (not with the effaclar duo) and I haven't seen any difference with it. I would love to see a video about skin with acne and blackheads but is dry as well. I feel that my skin is aging much faster than it should be because of the dryness, but I'm stuck between trying to moisturize my skin and treating my acne and blackheads.
