Ok. I am a registered Vascular ultrasound tech with 23 years of experience. I can tell you with great confidence that over 95% of my patients have venous reflux (also known as venous insufficiency). I have found this in late teenagers and young athletic people as well. It is easy to say that it’s genetic, but the truth is we all get some vein deficiency as we age. It can cause aching, throbbing, restless leg syndrome, swelling, spider veins, and varicose veins. To the more severe degree, it can cause skin discoloration (appears like freckles or dark skin in the lower legs) and the worse case scenario is a non healing wound or ulcer. The common denominator is gravity. As we age, we spend more and more time on our feet. In our 20s, we at some point start to say “ man, my legs are getting tired. This getting old sucks.” Millions of people have this and it is undiagnosed. Most people won’t talk to their doctor about it because they think it’s normal for their age. When I do a venous ultrasound, i look for veins that allow blood to fall back towards the foot. These veins are incompetent and aren’t doing their job. Certain veins can be treated by different ways to send the blood to the deep veins which are almost always normal. The end result is to send the blood from a bad vein to a good vein. For most people, the symptoms go away. This is fixed with a quick office procedure. So how do the majority of us get bad veins? I think genetics plays a role for those who develop varicose veins early in life. But we all stand on our feet for long hours and nobody wears any good support socks. Everyone wears little ankle socks or no socks at all. The blood pools in the veins as we stand for long periods of time. The normal vein begins to stretch and the valves start to separate and lose function. It slowly gets worse with time. It is not a serious condition. You don’t have to do anything about it unless it is affecting your quality of life. Conservative treatment is to wear support hose (20-30 mm/Hg) and to elevate your legs as much as possible. I managed my leg pain with support hose for 15 years. I eventually had enough of it and had my veins fixed 4 years ago. I have been good ever since. I forgot to mention that usually most people have more pain, swelling, and /or varicose veins on the left leg. This is due to the way our left iliac vein (located in the pelvis)is positioned between the right iliac artery and the lumbar spine. This is called May-Thurner syndrome, but most people do not have this. This also can be fixed with a stent. For the people who have had a DVT ( deep vein thrombosis or blood clot), your problems with chronic swelling, pain, discoloration, and ulcers may give you trouble for years to come. Support hose and elevation is your best bet. The deep veins cannot be fixed. If this sounds like it’s you or someone in your family, I recommend finding a good vascular surgeon for a consult. There are many people who fix veins, but only a few are good at it. I have seen plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and general surgeons do vein work because it pays well. A good vascular surgeon should know what’s in your best interest. Almost all insurances, Medicaid, and Medicare pay for vein procedures. Be wary of vein practices that want cash only. Some will say pay up front and then hope your insurance will pay you back. Not a good thing to do. I think the world of Dr Berg. I started Keto 4 months ago and I have lost 60 lbs. I just wanted to give some advice and my expertise as a registered Vascular tech with many years of experience scanning veins. I hope this helps someone. God bless.

ddye011 Awesome thanks for your professional feedback! I actually got my first burst of spider veins on my outer thigh in high school! I was so self conscious (& still am that everything revolves around the issue; to the point I wear pants dead of summer.) And I’ve been very active my entire young life & remain active 30 plus years later but now have tons of spider veins all over both legs. I’ve had sclerotherapy multiple times (over the years. But it’s cosmetic so out of pocket & expensive!!) I always followed up with orders wearing compression stockings but they’d just come back & bring more of their ugly friends along. I finally had ultrasound several years back & one leg had reflux but not the other so I thought I’d wait to use insurance when both were covered so I could have the main veins that cause spiders to occur, surgically removed. Then I guess I’d prob have to have both legs shot up BIG TIME to get rid of all the unsightly veins? I’m a bit afraid of vein surgery esp because I somehow have never suffered any itchy, heavy legs, etc. so I really feel it is entirely cosmetic but it has ruined my life in many ways & Id love to finally feel free. It really sucks & seems incredibly unfair. The few times I’m wearing a bathing suit or shorts, friends ask what happened, how’d you get all the bruises, etc😩Any advice? Feedback on surgery & how they’d handle all those spiders after surgery? I’m fit, super healthy & active but won’t have legs exposed; so tired of this. And I’d be so excited if something could be done more easily via laser; is there anything new in this realm rather than zillions of shots to rid of spider veins? I’d be very appreciative of any advice!
@ddye011
@ddye011 5 жыл бұрын
Dream Star It’s kinda hard to say without knowing what your ultrasound may show. Conservative therapy would be wearing support hose, elevating the legs, try to do some walking. If the pain is still unbearable, then I would research and find a good vascular surgeon in your area that works on veins. As in my previous post, do some good due diligence and read reviews. Myself, I think the radiofrequency ablation works better than the laser ablation. Venaseal (glue) works well, but not all insurances cover that yet as it is the newest technology. Hope this helps. Remember, I am not a doctor. I am a registered vascular tech with many years of experience.

ddye011 sir why is it that whenever i eat any kink of carbohydrate my legs and fingers swell up i want to know the difference between edema and this i heard its not moving fluid and that it leaks the cappillaries? But when ever i dont have carbs theres no swelling and my legs look nice again im 15 years old

Salad Dressing I would think your veins are OK at this standpoint. They usually won’t be that bad until you start spending more and more time on your feet (jobs, kids, etc). I think you kinda already answered your question when you said it is directly related to carbs. The Keto diet is easy to follow. Watch Dr Berg and you can learn a lot about it. I know myself i get bloated and swollen from a heavy carb meal. I have kids about your age and I am working on everyone in the house headed towards a Keto diet. Good luck!

My varicose veins only arrived when I was a postie, exercising (walking with weights) up to 6 hours a day. I would say that 8 out of 10 posties in the office had varicose veins to some degree. Walking did not help. I would finish a shift and I could feel them throb, they would be very painful, and they would be standing completely proud of my legs (then rubbing on clothes to make them extra sore). These are the two things it can be: 1. you're not moving enough and therefore blood is pooling and distending the walls of your veins (which are called capacitance vessels for a reason). This will only be the case if the doctor did in fact successfully treat all of your points of reflux. Number 2. you haven't had all the points of reflux treated (many doctors and surgeons are actually pretty clueless when it comes to curing venous reflux disease and not just treating it (seal the visibly varicose veins but not the hidden ones or closing up all of the vessels with an incompetent vein valve)). This oftentimes happens because there's a pelvic origin for the venous reflux (called pelvic congestion syndrome - quite common in both men and women) which is left untreated and these varicose veins must be found via an ultrasound not only of the legs but also the pelvis. It'll either be this or because you have incompetent perforator veins that were never sealed by the doctor. These are the veins that communicate between the superficial veins (the ones you can see once they become varicose) and the deep veins (ones you can't see no matter how varicose, which also includes the perforators themselves). Find a really good doctor who checks for pelvic congestion via an in-depth ultrasound and make sure you don't stay still (either sitting, standing or lying in bed for any extended lengths of time other than when you go to sleep (if you have to sit at work all day, make sure you get up to move about every 20 mins or so)) and you will be able to successfully treat your varicose veins (unless you have true deep vein issues which is very very unlikely).

Also, if you lift heavy weights or strain on the loo, do not perform the Valsalva maneuver (where you forcibly exhale whilst holding your breath. This puts extra strain on your vein valves since your chest moving up and down acts as a pump to return the blood from the pelvis/thorax to the heart. When you hold your breath, you increase the pressure the blood has to work against to return to the heart once in the pelvis/thorax). Breath through the whole range of motion if you lift heavy weights. Eat more fibre so you don't become constipated. Your veins will thank you for both of these. No more lie-ins in bed as well!

I am now in Thailand and have some gotu kola growing here. Some pain behind my knee showed me a varicosity. Eating 9 gotu kola leaves/day relieved the pain in a week. Now about 60 days later the size has been reduced. Spider veins are also improving. I am already active growing food, but in the dry sesson, I need to stand more while watering the crops.

@roijaxen5674
@roijaxen5674 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeanreynolds1425 Fresh is good, but then you have to experiment with dosage. I assume that the dose is low and being consisistant over a long period minimizes my risk of adverse reactions. A capsule has the advantage of a specific average dose. As with all Eastern herbs, preparation can be the difference between an effective medicine or a worthless excercise. Study all you can about dried gotu cola leaf and how best to deliver it into your bloodstream. It could be a hot tea, cold infusion, an ointment on the skin, or even inhaled as a steam or smoke. It is the dry season here and my supply is dormant. I've been off of gotu kola for a couple of months now. My focus now is stronger hair and skin and healthier nails. When the rains come in May, I may grow gotu kola again so I know how it was handled.

@@sparrow7356 The laser treatment only works if the treated vein isn't crooked, but straight, as far as I know. I was 24 when they had to remove an entire great saphenous vein without me ever being overweight or pregnant. Later I found out that inflammation of the veins may be connected to some neglected issue of the liver as the liver has many functions, including hormone regulation ones. So what helps me are milk thistle seeds. I grind them in a coffee grinder and eat one tablespoon (with water because it's hard to get it down otherwise) in the morning on an empty stomach for at least 4 weeks. If anything, it will at least support the liver greatly. In my case the blunt pain in the veins stopped and they recovered their normal shape (didn't stick out from my legs anymore).

My legs look so much better now than 15 years ago when I had poor circulation. I had spider veins and thick lines behind my knees that were pinkish purple. It was a daily leg cramp that alerted me to do something about it. I invested $65 on electric leg compression. I also bought an electric foot massager, about $50. Both were from Amazon. I used the leg compression 3-4 times a week and I don’t know for how long because I remember putting lotion on the back of my knees and there was no spider vein in sight! I took photos on my phone and I had to enlarge them to really look for the ugly discoloration. Geez! I was ready to accept aging and there’s a $65 cure for spider veins! Btw, my feet look better too! One doctor on KZfaq suggested Nattokinase, Vit C, K and E supplements to help with leg cramps. I have not had one serious leg cramp in almost a year. That’s a true story.
