Tena koe/hello Jose I commend you for teaching others how to trim harakeke/flax bushes and also look after them. I both trim and harvest my own flax plants. I also weave the flax into hats, baskets, bangles and many other things. We New Zealand Maaori (indigenous people of New Zealand) have their traditions and customs relating to flax bushes/paa harakeke, when we trim or havest the flax we always leave the 3 middle leaves and we don't cut straight accross any of the leaves, we trim the leaves on a slant in a downwards motion so any rain will run straight off the leaf rathe than go into the leaf. once again, wht a great job you are doing in educating others about care and maintenance relating to flax bushes. I’m a sucker for clearance plants to nurse them back. I found a yucca adam’s needle and I am finding KZfaq very helpful on how to take care of it. Thanks for doing this awesome video. I paid $10 for it and I’m so happy right now.

Thank you so much for this. It's taken me months of trying to cut it back and doing it badly. This video was so helpful and informative about how to do it correctly.

Thank you! This was so very helpful to me. I've just moved into a new home which probably at one time was beautifully landscaped. I'm feeling so overwhelmed. I didn't even know what this plant was called. I found several videos that said what to do but yours was the only video that showed how to do it. I was just cutting the tips on the plants that were bended over but now I know how to do it properly. Thanks again! Subscribe and Liked!

Very informative, thank you! You clearly showed how to give that flax a much needed haircut. I would have liked to see an after photo when you were completely done cleaning it up.

Thank you so much for showing your skills. I need to trim ours and wasn't sure how to do it. We have a lot in our garden here in NZ where it's a native bush.

I have a beautiful one of these, not sure the exact variety, it has pink in the leaves and is very large, tall with beautiful interesting flowers. I love how you had so much patience with this process. I had a gardener who I thought was very knowledgable who cut across the whole top of the plant down to trim it back. It looks like this is not the way. Anyway, really appreciate your help with this since now I'm going to do it myself. The plant is gorgeous but too big and getting into the driveway. I know they make beautiful baskets out of this. Maybe one day in my old age I will make baskets with the leaves. LOL.

1:40: serrated hand tool found more easily at a landscaping shop vs hardware store 2:50 onwards: how to remove dead growth at the base of the plant * don't cut at the tips, rather cut at the bottom near the base to thin * if they are loose enough, you can just pull the dead growth/leaves out vs cutting them at the base * wear gloves to protect your hands!

Kia ora Jonathan, you can use a sharp knife like a stanley knife. you don't need a special tool. I weave with harakeke its not flax nor related to the flax plant it is related to the lilly family, the english got it wrong lol. Although the plant is very hardy. This demonstration is brutal i suggest you watch how to harvest harakeke kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKpxjcRq05mYXX0.html In NZ its common for weavers to clean down our bushes late autumn early winter that is when the pups are ready to separate and replant. I love this plant, its used for medicine, basketry, clothing, mats, hats, rope, glue.... etc good luck harvesting/pruning

😢😱😢😱 nooooooo!!!! It goes ugly like that because of the hedge trimmer...not to mention, can do some damage to your trimmer. You're suppose to chop the bottom leaves away, about 4-6inch from the root and this stops the water logging. This video made me so sad knowing how precious and useful it is 🥺😭🥺😭
