This is an alternative method to spreading out your thin set onto the wall. Normally we comb out the thin set mortar onto the wall we are tiling, then trowel out our perfect parallel groove lines of mortar, then backbutter the tile and place it onto the wall.
How To Apply Thinset directly to the tile
We used the new Schluter Allset thinset for shower walls for different types of tiles. This one of the best thinsets for large format tiles (LFT), and also for large heavy tiles (LHT) like granite tiles, stones, and travertine tiles when tiling a shower wall.
When tiling bathroom walls you must use a stable thinset mortar
But in this case, we are doing the opposite of what we normally do for thinset for shower walls, and back butter the wall with a thin layer of mortar first. Then we actually trowel out and comb the mortar grooves onto the back of the tile. So now the lines of mortar are on the back side of the tile.
How to apply thin set mortar wall tile for shower walls
It is much easier to handle the troweling because all you have to do is comb the back of the tile and press it down onto the back buttered wall, and you'll get 100% coverage. it does not matter which surface gets the troweled out mortar and which one gets backbuttered, because in the end you still mash all the mortar together. Remember the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) recommends 95% coverage on all tiles in wet areas.
