The fear of public speaking, whether in front of large or small groups, is extremely common. While many people experience this fear, it can be managed and overcome with practice and time. Mariama Whyte not only shares her personal journey in a unique and compelling way, but she offers an accessible and empowering framework for people to begin trusting their own voices so they can fully express themselves with confidence, authenticity, and impact wherever they are. Mariama Whyte is a singer, songwriter, actor, speaker, coach and ebook author from
Cleveland, OH. She has performed in the Broadway National Tours of The Lion King and The
Color Purple, and on several regional theatre and music stages. As a speaker, she combines
dynamic storytelling and singing to enrich her audiences and coaches individuals to communicate and perform with confidence and presence. Mariama has released various music projects as an independent recording artist and is excited to release her new album,
"Hey You It's Me” in 2023. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Mariama, your TEDx Talk was amazing! So authentic and uniquely you, yet it reaches so many! Thank you for putting this into our ethos! The lack of psychological safety is something many people experience when they don't see people who look like themselves in spaces. You managed to effortlessly put us all at ease and helped us to know that we are all going to be ok - with our strong sense of home. Much love

Shout out to @CollegeofWooster! But I was especially moved by your account of AP classes in high school and associated culture shock. This was a problem in my HS, too (Cleveland Heights - for reference to those reading - a suburb adjacent to the Shaker Heights district Mariama grew up in). That narrative is far too prevalent to this very day. The overall takeaway of your talk is so uplifting, positive, and nurturing of resilience! I am glad, however, that you made a point to mention the challenges and injustices - things we do/don't have personal control over. You really are 2Cool. Well done, Mariama!

You were eloquently telling my story! 😉 As a fellow Shakerite, I had a similar path as you, at least 10 years before..falling into silence in AP classes because I was not "at home". This continued in my college years...After all these years, it has been defined for me! It is good that you found the tools to work through that season to find your voice and home again. Any student of yours will blossom because you will "see" you in them. Onward!

The opening was incredibly compelling, in fact, gripping as it totally pulled the listener in. The song's true power is your talk leveraged the song and the importance of owning and knowing self. through themes of vulnerability, the power of authenticity, the value of self-awareness, and transformation of self to find a home within thy self. I watch a lot of Ted Talks, and this was the first time I saw one begin with an acapella song and in fact, was more like a one-way play. Well done!

Wonderfully put! As a teacher, I believe that many of our youth today are misrepresenting themselves because the don't feel at "home" with their own self. This in turn leads to frustration, shut downs and anger because they have yet to learn adequate coping skills to deal with the pressures. Using the steps you mentioned can unlock the way to a confident and happy existence.

Thank you for your insight as a teacher. It takes some time and practice to get there! Our youth need all the tools to be comfortable with themselves in a sometimes not so comfortable environment. Please share with your students and colleagues! I hope my talk inspires them :)

I understand! I hope my tips can help you the next time you do a presentation. Remember to breath, not just when you're preparing for a presentation. But perhaps have moments of deep breathing as a daily exercise to help with staying present and in the moment. AND think about presenting your talk as a gift to your audience. Put your audience first. That may help take your mind off of your own anxiety. You got this!

My thing is that I don’t sound “proper” due to my upbringing and can’t help compare myself to people who do. Any advice ?
