It’s really cool to see someone talking about the less tangible aspects of training like how to try hard and to hear your perspective on it. I think mental game in “off the wall training” is so neglected at all levels of climbing. Love your work man :)

Thanks! Climbing is definitely more feeling when it comes to on the wall but off the wall there is tons of room to apply just straight sports science!

V nice, like this style of detailed video on a subject you're clearly quite knowledgable about, cool to see the crossover between powerlifting and climbing. One question, I've been experimenting with high RPE effort in both powerlifting and climbing/hangboarding too, but find it to be super exhausting (presumably due to high CNS stress). How frequent would you say it's reasonable to train like this, and how do you recover from and/or mitigate this type of fatigue?

2-8x a week go as hard as can as often probably
@loiduongjr
@loiduongjr Ай бұрын
The volume is extremely low (you are only doing 2 max effort reps per hand). 3-4x a week should be totally reasonable. I think a normal try hard sesh itself is much more taxing.

Usually I only do it before my off the wall training. Climbing is much more technical/unpredictable so being too stimulated can increase your rate of error in climbs.

What do you think of my current finger strength program? I do weighted hangs with BOTH arms (since I'm weak...) and add 1 kg of weight each week. I only do this once a week. You think I should add some campus board as well or is that too much? I've been climbing for 2 years.
@loiduongjr
@loiduongjr Ай бұрын
Impossible to say with that information. I don’t campus board, I only use it for activation. It’s all about intensity.
@gingobingo1567
@gingobingo1567 Ай бұрын
@@loiduongjr I started with 10 kg added on 20mm 15 weeks ago, and now im at 30 kg added. I climb monday, tuesday and friday and do this program on monday session. The other sessions I do 20mm lifts with less intensity to get warm.
@loiduongjr
@loiduongjr Ай бұрын
Try to work from principles. To make strength gains you need to recruit more muscle fibers. To recruit more muscle fibers you need to be trying hard. If the intensity is right than you're good. If it's too easy than you are not making optimal strength gains.

Do you sometimes do one arm lifts instead of hangs? Seems like you prefer hangs 😊 And do you sometimes lift 80% of max (3-4 reps) or always max hang?
@loiduongjr
@loiduongjr Ай бұрын
I find hangs the best because (besides a true isolation setup) I find that it targets the forearms to most effectively (by minimizing other muscle groups). For example in lifts, it is easy for your form to break down yet still lift the weight (because your legs are strong) and same with seated pull down (your core and legs and lats are strong). In a hang the limiting factor actually seems to be my shoulder and then I continue the rep with feet on the ground curls. It's a little convoluted but from a pure activation stand point I feel a huge difference.
@srenmllerjepsen6137
@srenmllerjepsen6137 Ай бұрын
Thanks for the answer. But: do you always try to lift 100% or do you also do sets of 80% of max, like Tyler Nelson recommends? 😊
@loiduongjr
@loiduongjr Ай бұрын
@@srenmllerjepsen6137 It's complicated. The exercise isn't programmed to hitting a certain number. The point is a concentric contraction of the forearm at rpe 9. The actual output of force varies drastically day to day.
