How-To: Tubular Cast On with Waste Yarn

The tubular cast on is a popular choice for edges that need a clean appearance and plenty of stretch! There are multiple methods, but the most common is the tubular cast on with waste yarn, which we’ll demonstrate here using Swish Worsted yarn [www.knitpicks.com/yarn/swish-...]. It uses waste or scrap yarn to provisionally cast on stitches, and then a handful of set up rows are worked. Once those rows are complete, the waste yarn can be snipped away or unpicked to leave a lovely clean edge. Pair it with the tubular bind off to have matching edges.
Supplies:
Waste yarn
A crochet hook if using a crocheted provisional CO
Snips if not using crocheted provisional CO
Project yarn
Project needles

You said to add an extra stitch if an odd number is required but my problem is I don't see how to make this an even number of stitches. When you start with the project yarn you start with a knit followed by a yarn over, but you end with a knit stitch - hence an odd number of stitches. For the next row, you start with the yarn in front and slip the first knit stitch, and you end that row by slipping the last knit stitch: still an odd number of stitches. What am I missing? How can you end up with an even # of stitches?

I has this problem. What I do is half the even amount +1 and then do the pattern. Example 30/2=15 so cast on 16 stitches 20/2= 10 so cast on 11 Set up: *k1 YO Row 1: sl1pw k1 Row 2: K1 sl1pw Row 3: Repeat row 1 Row 4: Reapt row 2 Row 5: p1 k1 then work in pattern

Does it matter how you cast on the waste yarn?

I think your row count is off in the video. It looks like when you're starting row 5, you say "row four is worked like row 2"--doesn't make sense. Great video but found that part to be wrong--I had to watch the video numerous times to see the error in the row count--otherwise a great demo.
