Nice video! (Just saw it pop up in a search for something else.) I loved the accessible beginner-friendly way you explained the process. And I got a kick out of seeing the free version of PianoMeter being used to tune the whole piano by aligning the blue dots to the tuning curve. I've heard of others doing that too, though I've not tried it myself. One thing I don't think the video stated explicitly is that when you're done with that tuning, the piano will be slightly flat again due to the increased tension of all the strings compressing the piano a bit. It looked like you were intuitively overshooting "zero" perhaps to counter that.

Very nicely done, Sir. Easy to follow, and the pace was just right....not too fast. That Piano Meter app looks great, too. Seems pretty straightforward and easy to read. Great advice for those just starting with piano tuning.

Hello, I'm the owner of a brand new Yamaha B3-TC3 (transacoustic), it has been delivered to my house one month ago, but now it's untuned (bad unisons etc.) then playing acoustic + electronic sounds together is awful. I have a free tuning included in the price within the 6 months after purchase. I know that a new piano won't stay tuned and stable during the first 2 years. My question is regarding the pitch raise for the next tuning, .currently it's tuned based on A442,8 (almost 443Hz, I checked with pianometer app that confirms this, curve is to high in the middle section of the keyboard). I would like to make it tuned at 440Hz, but I wonder if it's a good idea as the piano seller says that it will decrease quickly (the strings will keep streching a little) during one year (that is why they tune it higher than 440Hz in the factory, that's what they said), if I ask them to tune at 440Hz, will it be untuned faster than if I ask 442 the first year then 440 the year after ?

The piano dealer is correct that the strings stretch out really quickly during the first year, and less the year after. I've personally done the "courtesy tuning" on a lot of pianos straight from the deal or factory. I found that a lot of the pianos are tuned to A=442, and I will often "tune the piano to itself" if the pitch is between 441-442 because I know that at the next tuning the piano will be significantly flat. If there's a 6-month appointment, I may target A=441, and after a year I just go straight for A=440. Different parts of the piano stretch more than others, so the first year can be unpleasant. The manufacturer recommendation is usually to tune the piano 2-4 times in the first year. For the acoustic + electric effects, is there a setting where you can temporarily change the standard pitch of the electric to match what the piano is?

@@pianometerthank you for the confirmation I'll ask 442hz for the free tuning then 441 after 1 year and 440 after 2 years. Yes the trans acoustic electronic part has a global tuning setting that I have set to 442,8hz, but it fits just a section of the keyboard as

It would be quite hard for your electric bit of the piano and the acoustic bit to ever be totally 100% equal in tuning. However, I agree that keeping the real piano strings tuned very slightly above pitch is a good idea. However, if you over do that. they will go sharp not flat from kind of metal and wood memory when you want to lower to 440.

Top tip to NOT use anything electronic. Get 4 tuning forks for the 1st four 5ths. so, from C, get a C, G, D and A fork. Why? because the 1st 4 fifths are the most difficult to tune. Tune round the circle of 5ths and when you get to A to E you have a 3rd interval reference with C. next one E to B you ad have a 3rd ref with G and so on. once you've done the middle octave and a half using 5ths and octaves to keep you in the middle of the keyboard, tune beatless octaves down the bass and up the treble.

This is really NOT the way to tune a piano! Use a mute strip to tune only the middle string for 1 and a half octaves in the middle of the keyboard. use the circle of 5ths and octaves. then tune the unisons of that octave and a half. then beatless octaves down the bass and up the treble. Papps mute for uprights, rubber wedge mute for grands.

PLEASE DON'T JUST TUNE EACH NOTE SEPARATLEY. Do the circle of 5ths whether starting on C or A. You will get a much better result. trust me. I've been tuning pianos for 40 years.

That will only sound really good in some keys though, and pretty bad in others. Equal temperament like he's showing will sound pretty good in all keys. It's a compromise that's been made so that we can play any key we want on a piano.

@@isaacsloan5896 Not true if you know what you're doing! The problem with NOT checking 5ths and also 4ths and major 3rds is that you will never get a good equal temperament. The intervals have to be tuned very precisely. eg: middle C up to G then up to D. If the G is just a tiny fraction wrong, both of these 5ths will be wrong. one too wide and one too narrow. Here's a tip for you. Tune middle C, then up to G, down an octave, then up to D, down an octave, then up to A, then up to E using an app. You now have a major 3rd reference ( C - E) and for all the rest of the 5ths. The top note of the major 3rd should be as "sharp" as possible without sounding bad. You can also check major 6ths from this point. 3rds and 6ths are much easier to hear the "beats" per minute.
