To continue to enjoy your instrument, the first thing you'll need to learn is how to tune it. A well tuned autoharp is heaven!

I am glad you are recommending an electronic tuner! I broke a string trying to tune my autoharp to a keyboard about 17 years ago, ha-ha. I then drove right away to the local music store, got a replacement string, and bought a $20 Korg-brand electronic tuner. Best investment ever, I am still using that tuner today.

Just received an autoharp that was incredibly out of tune so this has been a huge help for a first-time tuner. A huge thank you!

Thanks for the tutorial. I just found a type 73 model in great shape, including a booklet on how to play copyright 1948. I have been looking for one like this for decades, because it has buttons like a golf tee and not the longer ones. When did they change them? Thank you.

Hello Pete. Thank you for the video. I have Tune Lab on my phone at A440 for pianos. Would that work for the Autoharp? Not sure of what octave I would use if any.

I can use the tuner just fine, but don't know which octive to start with. If I start too high on the low end, I will snap strings on the high end. If I start too low on the high end, I'll have untied shoe strings on the low end. What note do I start with and where? Otherwise, great videos.

Where is the link to the long necked star shaped autoharp wrench? I can't find them anywhere.

Is that tuner just clamped to one of the tuning pegs? I could not see how it was attached. Thanks for the tips.

Great advice! I was wondering what tuner you are using? or if you recommend any particular electronic tuners for 36 string chromaharps?
@cajsheen25945 жыл бұрын
Pete said that was a Shark tuner. Be sure and get a chromatic one. X

Hey man, i just bought an autoharp from a thrift store type place. It's beautiful but the sound coming from it is like it's out of a horror movie. Ive never heard an instrument sound like it. I also noticed the hole is really close to where the buttons are. I've never used an autoharp or seen one before but wanted to learn it. Any advice?

My tuner never shows the # notes. So I am wondering when I get the key note is it tuned when the line is far right. Or is it completely out of tune. Or is it my tuner?

i would think it would ''wolf'' tuned to perfect pitch with a tuner ? should be tuned to temperment like a piano ? or do you gain or lose cycles with 36 stings
@someolddude38584 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, all of the normal inexpensive electronic tuners tune to the same equal tempered scale as pianos use. The whole point of the equal tempered scale is to spread the "wolf" out over the whole scale, so that the harmony of no particular key is ruined. In the equal tempered scale, the only interval that is a pure integer ratio is the octave. Even fifths and fourths are slightly off from a pure rational intonation, but it takes a keen ear to notice. I don't know what you mean by "gain or lose cycles". f you were to try to tune an autoharp to pure ratios (such as the fifth being a 3:2 ratio), you will quickly get into a lot of trouble. The chords on a chromatic autoharp are probably in too many different keys to avoid an ugly wolf somewhere. (I haven't done the math to be sure.) Tune it like any other equal-tempered instrument and you avoid the issue. If you want to try different temperaments, the Korg OT120 Orchestral tuner has a number of temperaments you can pick. It's pricey, though.

i bought a used os 21c and when i went to turn it i find i cant turn the pins with the wrench=do the pins saize up? what can i do about it?
@Daigleharp7 жыл бұрын
How old is your 21C? The sad fact is that a large number of these have tuning pins which are too soft. The four sided (rather than eight) tuning wrench is best for these, and the wrench must be fully seated on the pin. If not, the corners of the pins can be rounded, making it very difficult to tune. Try to fully seat the pins. If that does not work, you may have to buy new pins (ours are much better) and install them. You can see ours here: shop.daigleharp.com/collections/parts-and-accessories
@verdevalley19667 жыл бұрын
im not sure how old -maybe 1979? is os21c-i have a 4 sided wrench but just feels like pins are cemented in and dont turn.
@Daigleharp7 жыл бұрын
1979 is American made & better pins. If you are getting a full grip on the pin and not stripping it, you may just need to put more muscle into it. The wood may be swollen with high humidity. Turn it counter clockwise until it turns to avoid breaking the string. Once the bond breaks it may be stiff, but will work better.

By the way, the 1879 to 1979 label was used well into the 1990s with both Japanese and Chinese made instruments.

I need to find out the actual notes as the tuner doesn't actually know which string should be tuned to which note. No one seems to mention this on the tutorial videos.

Here you go - for a 37-string chromatic D'aigle : F G C D E F F# G A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C D
@apilgrimsprogress76885 жыл бұрын
The problem I have with my Aigle autoharp is that there is actually no way to find out how to tune it because nowhere does it say what each string should be tuned to. Obviously you have memorised the notes of each string but for the novice it is impossible. Most autoharps have the actual notes stuck on somewhere but not so these ones and I don't believe the tuner knows.

Thank you. I brought mine out of the back of the closet. It's not as hard to tune as I thought it might be.

Plese tell me what an idiot I am if a have this wrong but - IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IN THIS WHOLE VIDEO IS ZERO INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO TUNE AN AUTOHARP!!! What note should the first string be in? What note second and so on? Guitar are usually tuned EADGBE - but autoharp? I have no idea and i have just watched a 6-minute video. We know how to use a bloody electronic tuner there is no need to explain that. We know that the tuning knobs should be turned in order to tune the strings! But - how to tune an autoharp, man? Fucked if i know.
