These are the three basic modifications you’re going to have to make to pretty much any new axe you get. Some will come with a sheath, but most budget axes do not. This isn’t intended to be a step by step tutorial. Rather I’m just attempting to demonstrate what is possible with a little know-how and a little time. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the video as well. Cheers.

So I gots me one of them Council Tool 'hudson bay' axes. The old version with the almost-beard. Love it. Sure, it had to be modified but in the end - what a great steel companion in the woods. Light, sharp and not too big. Great vid, as always. Don't recognise the tunebut love the fluglehorn. Cheers from the other coast

Cheers, I have both and enjoy them both. The new one if pretty much a Dayton, but it’s a better splitter.

lovely video. i find it interesting how the council tool hgudson bay has turned from a thin limbing axe into a thicker splitting axe by increasing the eye and making it stubbier.

Awesome video Kevin! I like the idea of that axe being a little camp splitter. With simple mods it now looks great. 👍 I’m really interested in how you got into doing some leatherwork. Would you be able to make a video on the subject or address some of the basic things one might need to get started? Thanks, Codi

Yeah, I’m lucky. I didn’t always see it that way. I hated living here when I was a teenager. All my friends lived in town, and I was stuck on the farm. But now I’m so thankful my great grandparents bought the land when it was still affordable. The dump’s 5-6yrs old now, but I have very low miles on it. I only use it to haul debris off site at work; otherwise it works on the farm. The plow is sweet! I need to get a backup camera on it though. Just makes life easier.

I was just thinking about that the other day. Unfortunately, I think I’m going to need cortisone shots in my arms. The docs says I’ve got permanent scar tissue from not allowing my arms to heal properly. I don’t think he understands I drywall and plaster for a living lol. So I have to take it easy on the chopping atm, but regardless I’ll be chopping. You can count on that. I’ll have my arms cutoff and swapped out for tools lol.

Yeah, I was reading about it the other day. It has to help with the inflammation though, right? Basically that’s the problem as I imagine it. They don’t have time to heal before they get re-inflamed. I read about some other therapies that do attempt to heal the tissue, but they’re more experimental and I doubt my insurance will cover it unless I go the traditional routes first.

Your “camp” is very much like the ones I had… The first one had a little lean-to that my friend and I camped in. We sat by many a fire at that site… hot dogs, canned soup, and French toast were staples. Later on I had another one with a little shack and a field stone fire ring. It also had a 100 yard shooting range… I taught myself reloading and marksmanship there as a teen. Cutting firewood with a bow saw and axe was a common chore at both locations. Eventually both sites were abandoned due to nearby development… I made that decision when a new neighbor claimed I shot her windows out… Mind you I was shooting a 30-06! I found out later that the Karan and Ken who lived there had harassed some kids to the point where they went over at night and retaliated by shooting holes in every window in the house with BB guns! Nobody believed it was done with a 30-06! I still miss those camps…

Brings back memories for me too. I built a cabin here when I was in 8th grade. Burned it down when I was 19. Shame you lost yours due to development. Yeah, I think Karen and Ken would have known if their windows were hit with 30-06 lol.

@KevinsDisobedience
@KevinsDisobedience 2 жыл бұрын
I think the flying fox is smaller, but not sure. The snaps and rivets are from Amazon. Just your basic set, and the leather is a 24” x 12” piece of veg tan from EBay, but I also buy half hides from Weaver. Hope that helps.

Glad to see you got some snow! This question is off topic but I went out chopping this weekend and was quite humbled. Just wondering what your best performing chopping angle is and if it's worth chopping when it's below freezing due to the wood being frozen? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@KevinsDisobedience
@KevinsDisobedience 2 жыл бұрын
Angle has gotta be below 20 degrees or don’t even bother. I find 17 with a small micro bevel works very well in most woods. The temp doesn’t really matter unless it’s real cold, so long as the wood is green and not seasoned. If it’s seasoned, get a saw lol. Most axes aren’t even close to setup for chopping, so don’t let that deter you if that was the case. Beyond that just work on accuracy. It’s way more important than power. That’ll come later with form.
@chimmy4244
@chimmy4244 2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the input! I've done some chopping in the past just monkeying around but this year gonna try and be more serious. I was at a 20 degree and ready to throw my axe. I also had an axe with a curvy handle more for display rather than using and that affected my accuracy. Hopefully with your input and my patience I have a better outing this weekend. Thanks

Hi Kevin, kinda knew to your channel. I love axes too. I have way to many. Or can you ever have to many? I am rehandeling an axe I purchased at a yard sale. They had used a grinder to sharpen it. I have lots of files but none seem to cut the steel very well. My question is, What type and brand of file you use? Thanks Kevin. Love your videos!!
@KevinsDisobedience
@KevinsDisobedience 2 жыл бұрын
Well welcome then. FYI I call the comments the doobly-do 😄. And no, you can never have too many. As far as the files go, I recommend Simmonds double cut. If you can find the 10” one with the red rounded handle that is the most aggressive file I have found. I use it to reprofile axes or grind new ones. That said, a lot of vintage axes are too hard to hand file. I have two Plumbs and one CT that a file won’t even touch. And some modern axes are that way too. My HB Kisa destroyed one of my files and the GBruk axes are soft enough to file but only just. So keep that in mind too. The file I was using here is a Pfred. I really like those too, as they cut well and leave a nice finish, but they dull pretty quick too. Good luck!
