How to Turn a Dress into a Skirt (Beginner Sewing Project)

This 50's style dress has been sitting in my closet unworn for a few seasons. I decided to transform it into a skater skirt to hopefully get more wear out of it. This project was super quick and easy, and definitely beginner-friendly!

I love your results! I have the same situation, so I appreciated your “costume-y” description. My dress is also like that. I feel as a skirt, it will be chic. Hopefully, I will be able to do the stretch and sew.

So cute! And practical! I bought a dress at a thrift store without being able to try it on that is a halter top that fits me terribly. I haven’t worn it once, but I love the material! I’m doing this project tonight!

That's my issue. I bought a dress online that's really cute, but the girls are way too big for the top, so I'm trying to find a way to salvage it.

Yay! Awesome little video. Thanks for the inspiration Kaylee. I was just thinking about doing that for two no longer age appropriate dresses I have not worn for years. I'm starting my new summer capsule wardrobe June 1st, so I have a few more days to make alterations.

Oh wow it’s funny, how I have the same dress with pockets the top did not fit so I removed the top but I did not know how to fix it , so I KZfaq “how to transform a dress into a skirt”. Your Chanel come up , I laughed because the dress was the same dress I need to fix. Smh lol thank you so much.

hey!! love the video but the dress I want to do this to has a waist about four inches bigger than my waist is there anything I should do to help with that?? cause im worried it will mess up the final product.

You can still do this--the elastic waist is really forgiving and 4" isn't too much extra fabric to gather into the waist for an adult size skirt. Make sure you still use elastic to match your waist measurement (don't make it bigger because the dress waist is bigger). In the end your skirt would be just a bit more gathered because of the extra material. If you have trouble stretching the elastic to match the fabric, try gathering the top of the skirt first so it matches your actual waist measurement, baste to hold that length, then sew on the elastic.
