How to turn a loco that is too big for the turntable.

Күн бұрынA visit to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway on 6th September 2016 revealed the surprising sight of Romney Hythe & Dymchurch locomotive number 7 'Typhoon' in action. This loco is too big for the Ravenglass and Eskdale turntable, so this clip shows how the loco was turned at Ravenglass.

Love the sound of the vacuum hose! Notice how the driver puts his hand over it! Must've been deafening for him!

It's not because it's loud, the vacuum brakes wouldn't release if the hose wasn't plugged because it wouldn't be able to create a vacuum. You can still hear the noise from the chimney continues after he puts his hand is over the end.

I reckon that this is how the Skarloey Railway would turn Duke, at least until they could install longer turntables at each end. Clever, but inefficient. And I imagine that, just like on the Ravenglass and Eskdale (where this was filmed, and which served as the basis for the Arlesdale), Typhoon's driver is also the fireman.

The Driver did the right thing: turn the engine first and the tender second. That's how you turn an engine that's too big to fit on to the small turntable.

this was how they turned nothern Chief for the 2022 Kirklees light railway gala, blooming irritating to do 8 times a day

No room to install bigger turntables but typhoon was just up from the Romney assisting while we were shorting on steam power and all our steam loco's fit the turntables perfectly

not really? the boiler was well stocked with water before the tender was uncoupled, there simply wasn't any other way to turn Typhoon

Also although there is cuts in the video the whole operation takes no longer than 5 minutes
