I am glad I could be of help to you! I do use cattail as well every so often and its very similar material indeed. I do have even more tutorials on my website (ad free but paying subscription) but they are mostly aimed at NZ-based weavers and cover all sorts of projects from hats to wall art.

Same here! I’m just beginning to learn weaving and there’s not much out there on weaving with cattails. These videos are wonderful.

If by catstail do you mean what we call Raupo here? It has a brown stalk flower. I've been able to weave it but it dries out and falls apart or do you cure it first? thanks

Kia Ora Rosemarie, thank you. That depends a lot on the season and the weather. I prepare it and boil it usually and then just hang it in the sun with a bit of wind to dry them quicker and then they just dry... ready to store for years.. I have put up a video here on how to prepare harakeke so you may want to check that one out.

@@nataliaparrado1540 that is totally up to you whatever suits your usual preparation anything will go but the general rule is the bigger the mat the longer the whenu will have to be and the wider you make them the longer they will have to be. I just split them with my thumb so they are on average about 1-1.3cm in the normal range or half that for smaller width items and wider for other things.

@@jt9564 it really depends... like so many other things in life. One person is good at something and another is not. Experience comes in a lot of ways and even though I consider myself to be experienced in some areas I would struggle in others so I cant really answer that question I am sorry. I really do not know.

@@pkshiing4415 It would be easier to weave smaller sections together and then tie or weave the pieces together. Kind of like quilting.

I think this was my "normal" width in this instance (around 1.2cm), but it really does not matter as this was meant to demonstrate the technique of turning the sides rather than making a particular sized item:-)
