This will not give as good results as welders with the appropriate functions, but your results look surprisingly good. The difference between a TIG and MIG power supply is that TIG is constant current and MIG is constant voltage. I discovered this years ago when I bought a MIG spool gun and connected it to my TIG inverter, i.e. the opposite of this video. The TIG constant current would blow the MIG wire away each time it struck an arc. When I turned the current down, the wire would just keep sticking. Maybe TIG welding on constant voltage is easier than MIG on constant current though. TIG inverters are really cheap these days, although high voltage start makes it SO much easier. I bought a cheap high voltage start unit for my TIG inverter which makes starting so much easier than scratch start.

Ive done the conversion to my Mig to Tig using the Tig tourch set up but im yet to use it due to a house move. good to see it works. Now i need to get some Argon and bring the rest of my kit over and get chassis building.

I'm impressed with your second results. I wasn't sure it could be done without a foot pedal to control the current. I've only ever done TIG on a ridiculously expensive set at work but I might give this a go. (I just like the way TIG welds look! Childish I know.)

Definitely a great idea, if you don't have a Tig Welding machine. The downside ?? Not much fun Tig Welding with a Mig gun ?? ( most have enough trouble welding with a Tig torch, lol ) Still great information to share.

Doesn't that machine do stick as well? If your using the tig torch you can put it in stick mode and just adjust the amps that way instead of adjusting wire speed and voltage.

Hello, great video and idea. I'm in the market for a welder and I'm in a bit of a dilemma because here where I live availability of gas purchase for the hobbyist is not easy (or affordable) so since I'm interested in being able to weld aluminum and also SS (plus mild steel) it would be 3 different gases so I kind of discarded this machine. I was looking into the MTS200 so I can add a spoolgun for alu MIG (with argon) and use the same gas for TIG SS. Sorry for the long story... my question is how thin SS can you TIG with this "hack" using the TIG torch? Thanks.

Why does the tungsten become live ? On a mig i can touch my wire on to the weld surface without it going live until I squeeze the trigger. Why does putting a tungsten into the end change this?
@amcustomfab
@amcustomfab 2 жыл бұрын
Because when your MIG welding you're not on MMA or stick welding mode. When you switch to stick welding mode the lead is live the entire time and it's not determined by the trigger. 😎

I wanna try the scratch tig with my mig welder one day. One thing I don't get is why all those torches have a knob for the shielding gas. I would assume that it shouldn't be too hard to put an electrical valve somewhere near the flow regulator, which could be activated by a button on the tig torch. Would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Generally the button you are talking about is only for HF (high frequency) start. The knob is very common if using a scratch start Tig torch. ( but this is something you might already know ?? ) You could set something up like you've mentioned ? But i never seen anyone bother with the hassle of doing this. Each to there own. 👍

Great video but one small contention, negative is not the same as ground. There are these things to think about. Positive ground is when a car battery goes positive to chassis. Negative ground is the opposite. Neutral ground is part of a star circuit. Ground literally means chassis or earth. I am saying this as a locomotive electrician. I know you mean well so I hope this is the help that is intended.

@@amcustomfab Thank you for getting some great information out there for us. I am not a welder although I must weld fairly often and am not terrible. Not great either. Just self taught. I learned to braze, gas weld and forge weld early in my career. Electro welding has come pretty easily. I learned some harder things first. I now need to teach my fourteen year old son these things and tig I think he would get the hang of the fastest. I know it came easily to me as it’s similar in process to brazing and soldering. So converting a machine I have to what I need is what your video is all about. In fact the swapping polarity is a key fact that I didn’t think of. Thank you and keep getting better. Never give up and always look for options. Greetings from the high plains of Texas.
