Removing characters in a story can be one of the most impactful and meaningful scenes anime and manga have to offer, but many series struggle to do it effectively. Dragon Ball for example uses Shenron to supersede this and it can make these moments feel hollow. Other series, like one piece or naruto manage to make them into scenes we will never forget.

On the Madara subject, the problem isnt really the writing, Madara was believably defeatable after being weakened by Might Gai, then Naruto and Sasuke with their new powers having him on the back foot the entire time, to the point where he needed to escape and get his second rinnegan. It was already established before that having both eyes increases the users power, so instead of Sakura choking, have her stab the second rinnegan. Its believable and has a satisfactory ending for his character, but Kaguya had to come out of somewhere to continue the series. I say the issue is the execution, because before that point, it was never hinted at before that Black Zetsu had ulterior motives, so his betrayal feels contrived and deus ex machina.

Tbf, the anime greatly exaggerated the length of Sakura fumbling around with her kunai instead of acting fast and stabbing Obito in the eyes. The manga had this moment play out far quicker. She had basically no thinking time. I think it was just a single manga panel given to her to react.

My favorite explain of predictable deaths done well is The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. The book is narrated by the personification of death, the grim reaper, and he flat out says that a character(friend of the protagonist) will die, and the scene where it happens is still heartbreaking.

I just wanna say in akame ga kill's case i feel like the excessive death in the beginning at least greatly helped the tension and characters in the manga version.(Strictly the manga!). While those early deaths soon become predictable and repetitive, it helps give credibility to the series own rule that when 2 imperial arms users fight seriously one of them will die. So then later on in the manga when we see characters who do survive long enough to have development fight it creates this tense feeling of not knowing how either side gonna end up.

I'd actually argue against what you said about Madara and Zamasu. Most people consider Kaguya to be more threatening than Madara and Naruto and Sasuke could've defeated him the same way they did with her. The death was still bad, but it wasn't a Deus Ex Machina. It was artificial extension of the series and potentially just a last-ditch attempt to set up for the following movie and second series. On the other hand, I think that Zamasu's situation was also reversed. It would have made (almost but at least it's better than what we got) perfect sense for Vegito to back Zamasu into a corner, considering it's already been established how absolutely crazy the power boost from fusion is. Then if Zamasu was actually destroying the entire timeline, then yeah, it makes sense that he would need to be deleted by some higher power, they just needed to give that more establishment. What happens in the anime with Trunks and the Spirit Sword to me is a "Deus Ex Machina". It wasn't really an act of god literally, but it may as well have been. We had no knowledge that such a thing was possible, let alone to such a degree that it was used supposedly making Trunks on the level of Vegito over the course of 1 arc where he was starting out just at base Goku Black's level. But ignoring the power levels, even though it is conflicting story telling, the scene itself wasn't really very good in my opinion. It's just kind of a thing that abruptly happens. It had no real build up, you could say that Trunks earned it for all the effort he put in, but it's not like this arc had a ton of build up or anything. It just seems like something they did because it was cool, not because it was the best thing they could come up with. I know I'm not the only one who holds this opinion.

(Anime spoilers for Tokyo Revengers) I think TR handles the issue of permadeath really well. Bc obviously the whole reason Takemitchy is time traveling is to save Hina in the future (as well as some other people that die); however, it’s not just assumed that everyone will be fine and dandy eventually in the future. Baji still dies in the past, and there’s nothing that can be done to fix it bc Takemitchy can only go back exactly 12 years. While people can still be saved in the future timeline, there’s still consequences for the past timeline.

Dbz deaths had weight for the same reason there is weight to see a loved one be hurt. You still don't want them to be hurt even if they'll be fine. Also, they are leaving it up to the rest to go on without them. Trusting they'll get the job done. But ya it's still not great. Maybe if they'd introduce hell sp at least time gone meant mega pain

There is one deus ex machina death that I think works exceptionally well, and it is in Steins;Gate. Spoilers for that below. So Steins;Gate is a story about a self proclaimed mad scientist, Okabe, accidentally making a time machine with two of his childhood friends, Mayuri and Daru, and a super smart scientist he meets, Kurisu. They use their time machine and they accidentally completely fuck up the timeline, and now it's on course to a dictatorship. And, most important for Okabe, Mayuri is murdered. He goes back in time, and she's murdered again. And again. And again. And again. He cannot save her. Even when it seems like he's succeeded, and he keeps her away from anything dangerous that could theoretically kill her, she just drops dead with no explanation. It is LITERALLY an act of God. The way time travel works is that each timeline is on a different Worldline, and every major Worldline has a series of events that will happen no matter what. Mayuri's death is one of those things. It works because it justifies why she dies no matter what, even when there's nothing there to kill her, since her death is literally ordained by fate. It also helps sell the complete hopelessness and desperation of this part of the series, as well as the themes of the series. Okabe is LITERALLY forced to fight against fate and the universe itself. His choices fucked everything up, and now he has to pay the price and fix everything he did throughout the series. It's some powerful shit.

10:30 I disagree. I think the brutality of the deaths is a strong point for the series. Death is hardly pretty, especially when you’re fighting a war. Ports would display the corpses of pirates as a way to say “fuck around and find out”. Vlad didn’t get the epitaph “The Impaler” with his kabob skills. It really pulled me in. Made me care more for certain deaths because I knew the possibility that their corpses could be used to brag.

I don't know the best way to resurrect a character, but I know the worst way - Lelouch. His death at the final episode was perfect, beautiful even. Originals krilin by piccolo sr, or when roshi against piccolo sr. Yes dragonballs exist but it was huge motivator for 2 characters. And that was before death lost all meaning. At last the last death that was nioce too stuck in fairy tale an i shink the shadow dragonslayer does. I still think the zeppeli characters deaths are good. I really apreciate at least in the manga meine lives and ii pregnant with a surprising wholesome tatsumi dragon. FMA is good. Hell even scar not fits with he is reborn as more like a spritual person that wants to create, like his brother. Gurren laggan. Narutos best one beside jiraya i probably granma shiyo hirahuk and when oe a man .... .. really is ehat it should be a ll about, sticking in some way. Madoka magica an mami. And sayaka. And kyoko. I rean the manga more , but ouki in kingdom deffinitly, he really sets the tone an it is never forgotten. I mean the real start is with tarting in te military hich yeah, people die , even ones that stick around, but ouki is remembered. As is seis doppelgänger shins former adopted brother. Its not a manga/anime but person of interest has really goo deaths, even of main characters. Within their own agency but tragic with consequences, and one having fusco shining as hero that is shedding his dark past. And i dont ant to spoil, but the finale has an amazingly said line of the maschine recounting while dying rom the virus, that people die, but they liv on in their actions and hom they afected. Its very sad, and hopeful, and harens back even to another death. Alo that to understand how people live, you have tosee them die. From th maschine a super AI learning. Not sure if i would count kikyo because she is more a ghost, which she is great as symbolic too. And the death lets her and inuyasha move on. Bu i dont know if i should call hr alive or a remenant aka undead.

Now as for a series where I dislike "death", or the lack thereof in this case. One Piece. I love you so so much, but you are so terrible at killing your characters. When One Piece decides to commit to a death, it works incredibly well. In the numerous flashbacks throughout the series, they almost all have at least one permanent death, and they're all powerful. They serve as very strong motivations for whatever character the flashback is about. When One Piece killed off two major characters halfway through the story, it served as an exceptional tone setter for what the future of this world could be like, it hits you right in the feels, and it establishes two of the biggest villains in the series as absolutely major threats. And then there's the times that One Piece gives a character a death scene, acts like they're dead for a few chapters, and then just brings them back with no explanation whatsoever. A man takes a bomb set to blow up a kingdom, flies it far into the sky, and the explosion goes off saving the town at the cost of his life. Powerful stuff, if he didn't inexplicably survive the massive town killing explosion with zero explanation and proceeds to literally never be important again. How about a father who attacks someone attempting to kill his daughter, giving her the time to escape and seeing his daughter for the first time since before his daughters had memories of him, before he is executed right then and there. Damn, that hits hard. And then this is all undercut when he comes back, not even in the main story but in the god damn cover pages, once again with no explanation. He was surrounded on all sides by enemies, and the sword was LITERALLY coming down on his head. There is no reason for his life to be spared, and no chance for him to escape. Why is this man alive. And then there's the time that they had two characters get beaten to within an inch of their lives, they're on deaths door and it seems they sacrificed their lives in order to help defeat the villain, only for them to turn up fine while two OTHER characters died instead, neither of which were anywhere near as close to death as the ones who survived. It felt like One Piece wanted to kill characters in this major conflict, but they didn't want to kill the two characters that already had the set up because the audience had a greater emotional attachment to them, so it killed two characters who people probably cared about less.

I don't agree with the Dragon Ball thing. I refuse to believe that death only matters if it's permanent. I will admit that it's gets pretty ridiculous in Super but until the Buu saga Dragon Ball Z actually handled death pretty well. I usually just stop watching after Cell so I just view that as the end of the series. Death doesn't matter because it can't be undone especially since people have died and been brought back in real life before. Death matters because of the impact it leaves on those affected by it and that doesn't go away just because that person comes back even if the only one affected is the person who died. For instance you can have a scenario where someone goes through a horrible accident and is killed but after the paramedic's arrive they're able to revive him but it's made clear that he was indeed dead during that time. This could severely psychologically damage someone, I mean how do you just go on with life like nothing happened while knowing that for a while you were literally dead? That's a potentially very interesting idea to use but only made possible if someone is allowed to die and come back. Or look at the Winter Soldier, someone that Steve believed to be dead is revealed to not only be alive but a mind controlled slave for Hydra. What should be a happy and joyous discovery for Steve is now a living nightmare. Once again an excellent idea only made possible by allowing a character to return. There's other examples I could point to but hopefully you understand my point. Death does need to matter but death being permanent is not the only way for that to happen. Now obviously this doesn't mean that any character can be brought back no problem of course, I would hate if Mufasa came back in The Lion King because it's the fact that he's dead and gone that leaves Simba so messed up for a while and would hurt his character as a result. Likewise I wouldn't want Sarah to come back in The Last of Us since her death and the fact that Joel will never see her again is vital to who he becomes later and why he makes the decision he does at the end. Death doesn't have to be permanent but if it's meant to be permanent then don't retcon it.
