I read a comment in the comment section of a recent post i made. It got me interested in diving into the idea of tackling the emotions of jealousy and envy.

It has taken me years to get over the artist comparison mentality. Years. I still catch myself doing it every now and then. Thank you for talking about this. It is a needed conversation. Every artist has something unique to bring to the table. We need to break away from scrolling through everyone else's art and just make our own!

The greatest strength comes from owning your vulnerability. I admire the commenter's will to post their thoughts on the struggle they're facing. Admitting that to yourself is a big step, and finding the courage to put those feelings out in public domain is a huge leap. I'm curious about where that artist is headed and I hope to witness their progression!

Yeah! i definitely want to know what changes to their practice this artist is going to make in the future. hopefully those changes get them where they want to be.

Calling yourself out when you feel the pull of envy is the first step, but even then you should never make it another creators issue from writing negatively. It's not fair on them 😥

This is a biiig struggle for me. I’m trying to confront it head on. I’m jealous mostly of people’s ability to put their work out there and be good at networking. I find it difficult to be vulnerable with others regarding my art so I envy those that showcase their work ..

Being vulnerable is what a lot of people like about the work that artists create. When people see others pour their soul out, or are honest about the work they do, people truly appreciate it more. so don't be afraid to let people know who you are.

Great thoughts, when we support each other, we're supporting ourselves, too. Loved the comment exploring their feelings of jealousy, self-sabotage, and joy

When I see artists with skills I have not learned, I admire and respect it. I learn from it. When I became a great player it broke my heart realizing the majority of artists get upset when confronted with their flaws. I never knew I was part of such a small group. i admit I am not perfect and I want to improve and learn forever. I just never knew that most people think they are perfect, (specifically the most flawed). Most humans cant mentally handle or process the concept that they need to improve themselves. It makes me sick. Love and Respect for yourself has gone too far. We should love ourselves, but always learn and improve.

I can relate - I just got my first mural gig a few weeks back, and while it was a big achievement for myself, I couldn't help but feel disappointed when I found out later I missed out on another huge local mural fest. I found myself feeling mixed emotions as I initially saw the project going up via social media and I started avoiding checking on the project. I had to really pull myself out of that emotional state and remind myself that those people earned that opportunity with years of dedicated career building, and not all opportunities are meant for me. It's tough starting out as a new artist on the scene , but like you said, it takes time so be patient. As long as you keep doing what you love and getting yourself out there, your time will come

I notice that artists automatically envy one another or barricade one another. They don't want to be friends or network, very seldom or rarely. I have tried to reach out to artists and make friends but it seldom ever works unless the artist is just a beginner and doesn't have an ego yet.

Bad artists, Rich artists (from their family wealth) and mediocre artists (who have a large group of friends from outside music) are typically the ones that do that. Not all of them. And the worst is the delusional ones who listened and believed their mom when she told them they were the best in the world. A true bluesman would rarely do that.

Yeah, people would comment on my work like "youre so good, i envy this etc." (not often nowadays since i havent been active xD), thinking its talent or something else. If they only saw the piles of bad sketches and works i have hidden away in my closets lol. There is so much practice behind everything. I think you really are onto something here, every time i feel the sting of jealousy, of someones opportunity or art, i turn it around to myself and speak to my brain "good, its awesome that others can share in this cool work now, its done, if it hadn't existed humanity would be deprived of it" You gotta train your brain yo!

it's like an iceberg. people only see a very small amount compared to the work artists had to do to get to where they're at.

You make a very good point that if you see some art from someone it's only a sliver of what they do what they have done it's certainly not a complete picture of them as an artist. We have a lot of things pulling us one way or the other, being an artist can be a difficult emotional Journey. Your art is great and your heart is great, thank you for sharing. 8 billion people on the planet, 8 billion Journeys.

yeah! I think it's part of the journey. those feelings are rough maybe especially so for the artists but I think it was a step forward. 1st put it out there (as he did) allowing for vulnerability and build onto that. either through the act of creating and strengthening yourself and the community at the same time. 🤙

I know that it is real and will happen time and time again. You are right saying that it's a journey and being different. If anyone reads this and come across this know and remind yourself that it is an emotion that you feel that way in that moment and it's valid. What is the most important is you and the power that you have to change it with your own actions. The artist you have seen found a way for them. It's time for YOU to find out your own way that works for you. Change perspectives/gears/mediums to get there.

On another note, I've noticed that artists (From what I've seen in my local community-Miami) think that it's a competition most of the time when it's not when every artist is uniquely different. In turn, it can lead you to these mentally exhausting issues.

Hey I definitely agree with your message. In my case, when it is an outsider, I normally gain inspiration. I put in my mind, if I keep going on this path hopefully one day I will reach and surpass this level. Sometimes I feel jealousy amongst artist within my close family, but it quickly turns into 'you know what I have some work to do. I need to hussle' lol Love your work. Beautiful like always. Greetings from louisiana.

Ive thought and thought and thought about this, and my biggest issue is im just impatient. Im trying to rush because i started taking digital art seriously last year when i turned 30. Most of my peers are in their 19-30s with years already under them and im just playing catch up :(

Iv'e yet to see a non-toxic art community, they really don't seem to exist, narcissism and jealousy seems to run rampant. Apparently it isn't even possible for people to be complimentary of other's art skills or collab, everything is a dumb competition. 🙄
