I've had a few requests for this - a tutorial on how to read and understand SIDs and STAR's within the Flight Simulator world.
SIDs, or Standard Instrument Departures are pretty much always used when you depart in an airliner on VATSIM and knowing what is expected of you when using them is key! I hope to try and explain all the considerations here in the first part of this video.
The second part focusses on STARs or Standard Arrival Routes when flying into an airport in an Airliner. Again, knowing and understanding these is vital for you to succeed on VATSIM and get the most out of your own simulator experience. Usually, a STAR starts on the edge of an airway with the first waypoint transitioning out of the airway onto the arrival route into that specific airport, as a little bit of bonus info for those who have read this far!
I'll show you a few variations and the considerations of each, decoding all the information available to you on the charts.
We're using Navigraph for the purposes of this tutorial, but you can usually find different styles of charts on chartfox.org as a second option (though Navigraph is absolutely worth it!)
Hope you enjoy the video! Be sure to click Like and Subscribe, and let me know what you think in the comments below!

Just to add, this a the level of detail that many experts posting here avoid. Thank you for tackling it.

Very welcome! Can be unnerving so if I can break it down the way I learnt it myself (and I'm no expert) then hopefully it can help lots of people :)

Terrific video. I have found teaching myself flight swimming that there is always another layer of the onion to be peeled away. This has got me to a new layer - not sure the MCDU on the A320NEO I usually fly can keep with this, but I’ll give it a go.

Aviation is very much like an onion! It has many many layers! The FBW A32nx isn't quite to the level of the Aerosoft CRJ or Heavy Division 787 for the flight plan managers but it's getting there :) make sure you're using the development version of the FBW mod for now

Oh my goodness thank you so much. Going to start Vatsim soon but I need to understand Sid and Star charts. Hopefully I can understand it because I use Chartfox.

You should be fine with this! Chartfox uses a different chart format and it's less standardised (whereas navigraph use Jeppesen) but all the info should be the same on whatever chart you look at :)

@@BritishAvgeek Yeah. I wish Chartfox had a little better charts as their sids are not rnavs

@@BritishAvgeek It'd be nice if you could make a tutorial on Chartfox charts since they are a bit different compared to Navigraph but of course that would be unfair for you since you just spent a long time making this video on Navigraph charts. I really want to start Vatsim but I know I am not ready. I think I can manage clearance and ground fine and tower, it is just departure/approach which I am uncomfortable with. Worried that they will say "Climb via SID" which they do sometimes and I won't know what altitudes to be at etc. ;/

Thank you for this, I’ve been struggling with the Bea 146 FMS using both MSFS planning and Simbrief, I always had a discontinuity. Having never used SiD and Star I just assumed they would always just connect when building flight plans above 👍

Here's a question i have, in the perf section of the MCDU, approach phase what is the point of entering the dest data? Altimeter / temp / winds etc. I always do it in the FBW320, but what is it actually doing?
@BritishAvgeek
@BritishAvgeek 3 жыл бұрын
It's giving the computer data to work out what wind component you might have, or the temperature for engine performance etc etc :)
