My clear and simple formula for understanding your buyers intent will help you when you're selling your art. Satisfy all three criteria and you make the sale. if either is missing you won't. Simple as that.
The process should be a personal one for us all so when you're faced with getting to grips with why people do or don't buy from you then remember the Buying Triangle - a need to satisfy Intent, Desire and Budget.
Oh and a warning against doing online courses and remembering that face-to-face contact with people is worth more than your digital footprint.
If you found this video helpful, inspiring or entertaining, and you would like to buy us a coffee, you can donate using the Super Thanks button (the heart icon). It'll go towards paying for the next camera (as I seem to break them with alarming frequency!!!). Thanks for all your support - Ed an Ady

I absolutely agree. I started an artist collective 5 years ago because I wanted a brick and mortar to sell and show my art and that of other local artists. One of the requirements is for artists to sit in the shop and learn the business of art. When people come in they inevitable ask what that artist does and where their art is. That is a great time to make the connection and to tell the story. If people like you and feel invested, they want to buy from you. They then have a story to tell their friends when they come over and admire the piece. You personally know the artist, you have the info and story of the piece. Sorry for the run on. LOL

That's brilliantly observed and so true. Like I said in the very long intro - art is such a personal thing so let's make sure it's always about people!

I've been the business for over 30 years plus... What you say is absolutely true! Most of my art that 'sold,' is often.... in person; or during exhibits/events. Excellent advice for any artist, seasoned or beginning...

The problem is that some artists (eg me) are terrible with people, by which I mean sociopathic. You are so right about engaging with people face to face and it is actually really rewarding and addictive until someone comes in and says something like ' so is that finished then?' or (insert passive aggressive insult here) and you want to punch them.
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 4 жыл бұрын
I hear you Martin and have experienced that. If I could choose I would hide under the duvet all day. But the desire to do what I do is so great that I push myself to overcome this. How do you know what you are capable of doing until you try? But yes, a punch to the face could be enormously gratifying and would certainly bring the conversation to an abrupt end.

@@SwarezArt haha. Thanks for your reply. I guess every artist has doubts because it's so hard to be objective about one's own work. I just go to a different place and say 'you can't please everyone'. ( and then you get those people you love the work that you did that you hate, and that is also very upsetting/confusing. "But WHYYYYY do you like it?.)

Thanks Ed, I totally agree with what you have said here. I made the vast majority of my sales when I worked out of a studio that was open to the public. I could speak to buyers, answer their questions and form a relationship. Plus they could see the art for themselves, not just on a screen. Another great video, thank you! 👍

Another great vid thanks. Sold things on and off for the last 30 years 'buyers are liars'! I have found the people that make the most song and dance about something often don't buy and the person who is understated and asks a few specific questions mean business. Never trust how someone looks either, often the scruffiest people are completely loaded and vice versa!

I think it's so important, in any business, to have that human connection. Without it, people feel a bit lost, and as much desire as there might be, it is not acted upon resulting in a sale. Your triangle is great.....a very precise condensation of the human attitude/condition. I never thought of it that way. I'm an artist jeweler, and have sold almost nothing. Fear of failure is quite a deterrent to me. I really enjoyed your video, and it was very smart of you to be constantly moving around your gallery showing your paintings.....very smart!! Everyone gets a good taste of your talent. And, as an added bonus, you're handsome also.

Love the triangle analogy, in my experience buyers buy due to those three reasons and any one of those missing will make it so much harder to close a sale.

I work days tangentially for the marketing industry--and the one thing I'm hearing time and time and time again is customized/personal. People are fed up with the cookie-cutter--either in the product or service as well as in the approach. Your buddy is correct. People want the personal touch as a counterbalance to the impersonal non-community anti-social media society we're in now. We're missing each other's spirits.

Any person needs to ‘understand’ and engage with a piece of art. If they don’t, they won’t buy. A client of mine said that anything that doesn’t have a subject, he can’t understand it and therefore won’t buy it. What I don’t understand is people buying prints for high prices. Why would you do that? It takes all sorts to make a world.

I think you're amazing, and thank you for sharing such invaluable information. My husband began painting just two years ago at 70, he is a well known musician. I hate the idea of galleries as well and all the celebrity sellers. They want your money bad. Pricing is difficult for us because of who he is. People constantly interested but I know the price is out reach. Any ideas for this situation would be most appreciated. So glad you're here, thanks again.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Pricing is always a very difficult thing and is partly led by the market you appeal to but also by the nature of the work. Added to that is where you have the desire to position it relative to all that. It can get very confusing. I am doing a Q&A this Friday March 27th so make sure you are subbed and turn the bell icon on so that you can join in live and we'll see if we can answer that for you on air. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbWHlJeqp76Uo40.html

Sounds right. I think what's then interesting is to look at what can us artists influence? Intent is something the client has and the artist has no way to influence. Obviously, we can do something on the budget side of things. To the point that if you are in it as a business, you break even on materials & time. As for the desire part... well, I would think that is where the personal contact fits in. Understanding what you clients like, what they desire is essential. Still, that makes me wonder: do you pander to their desires? Or paint your passion? My triangle is broken for a number of reasons. Well, actually I don't have much of a triangle yet (I'm not generating enough traffic) and because I paint what I like/ love (close ups of ocean waves... paintingsofwaves.com). The waves are staying (for now).
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike and great points raised too. No, I don't pander to anyone - I do what I like and that's what I enjoy and can do effectively. If that is something someone engages with then great but if that isn't the case then the journey for them stops there. I couldn't be anything other than what I am and keeping that authenticity keeps the creativity true and the best it can be. People respond to that. There is an audience for us all. Hope that helps...

I found it Really interesting, thanks! I think also there’s questions around ‘availability’ or ‘accessibility’ too (which might just be a subset of one of the three you mention)... in that someone might have the intention, the budget and the desire for the art but for some reason, the artist is not available to engage with, or the delivery is impractical or a piece is sold, and a new piece needs to be made on commission, it might not meet a deadline, etc. So I think it’s important that buyers are made to feel welcome, are actively engaged with and well accommodated, because as customers we like to feel special 😁😜 Also, do you need to use dehumidifiers? I’m imagining damp might be a real consideration for your studio space.
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 4 жыл бұрын
Easy answer: the art and artist is always available. I have never had that problem because the answer is always yes. I am always there to engage, delivery is always practical and a piece is always there and deadlines are always met no matter how impossible. So for me the accessibility/availability issue doesn't exist. But I take your point of course. No I don't need dehumidifiers, as the skylights take care of sucking everything out of the building!

More useful information, thank you for sharing. I live on a lake here in Alabama. There are lots of wealthy people that live on my lake but I don’t know how to connect with these wealthy people to sell my art. I am not wealthy myself but trying to market my art to a luxury market. I am connected to all the social media pages in my area, but I just don’t know how to meet my market in person. As far as budget goes, in your triangle, do you have a particular system as to how you price your art? Do you change your pricing depending on the location you are selling it at? Thank you for sharing with us. I have learned so much from watching your channel, and appreciate your knowledge. Blessings to you and Ady.
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 4 жыл бұрын
Good lord! That's a whole series of topics on its own and impossible to answer as a comment reply. I don't change any of my prices for anyone or any location. Yes I have a system to price but it's a complicated one. Remember the other factors? Just because someone is wealthy means nothing if they don't desire or have no intention to buy. Dispel the wealthy client myth because it will disappoint you. Money alone does not equate to sales. Have you considered an open event? Have you found out where they hang out socially? Social Media will have little impact unless the right people are following you - which means they have interest. Get them first. Those that follow you back. Find 50 of them who engage. That's all you need to start with. But not just anyone - it needs to be those inside the market you are targeting. Hope that helps...

Sorry to ask so many questions at once Ed. All these things came to mind when I watched this video. Your response is very helpful, and I appreciate you taking the time. I don’t change my price regardless of location either. I think some artist do. I have a lot of interest in my art, the intent is there, the desire is there but maybe I am just overpricing my work. I feel like if I undercharge for my art, it cheapens my artwork. It’s not really about the money so much to me but rather trying to build my name as an artist. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

A quick question with probably not a quick answer. Do you have a template or example of a contract you use for special commissions? Besides emailing back and forth on the idea or details, what do you use to set out terms, timeline, reworking the piece, deposits, in-process payments, etc etc. Thank you both for all you do.
@SwarezArt
@SwarezArt 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! I don't have any contracts for commissions. Everything is done by mail or a phone call and sometimes a home visit. I may be either a genius or a colossal idiot for the way i do mine but I don't ask for ANY commitment from a client until they tell me they are happy (usually when I am in their home). If I can't create what they want I feel like I don't deserve to get paid. This, for me, makes me work very hard for a client. It suits me this way and my clients like this approach as it doesn't make them feel pressured. The whole process, when it's relaxed, means the actual painting is better in the long run if that makes sense? I know that won't work for many people though... Hope that helps...

You aren't missing anything. You are right in that you cannot change any of these factors - that's not the point. It is not for me to say that by understanding this principle that you can affect any of them because you cannot - what you CAN do is get under the noses of as many people as possible that may satisfy SOME of the criteria. I have no idea where or when someone will discover my site and my work - I have no control over that. What I can affect is the quality, diversity and service proposition and be honest and authentic. If I catch someone who engages with that and is looking for a piece of art I have, at least, begun that process of linking the points on the triangle together. I cannot directly influence things as you mention and to chase that is an impossible ask.

Love the three point thing, thanks! Now go have some cocoa, brrrr. :-) Hey, I wanted to ask you if you've ever gone the 'art rental' route, you know, like for photo shoots for films or interior designers? I can't tell if that's a scam or a small income stream. The whole borrowing thing seems a bit nefarious, acyually, especially since your landlord seldom lets you borrow utilities, right? Just wondering what you thought.

Never got into it. I do rent to businesses which is okay but not to anywhere else yet. If I do I will do a video!

Hello Mr. Swarez: I found that most people will look at my art, (paintings) but few are buyers. Like all things that are marketed there must be a need to have it and not just want it. I also have a question on how you put together a budget to take to a bank for a business loan? Do you show them a balance sheet of your past or future business profits? Do you apply for a business loan through the government as grants or what is ever out there for small business? I do enjoy you videos.

Thanks for the feedback Douglas! I have never had to apply for any loans or funding so I am not the right person to ask I guess? I started very slowly with just one canvas and I have saved every penny I can since. Everything is self-funded and re-invested, very steadily and one step at a time. I had no assets, no loans, no savings and no back-up plan (and still don't!). I have no one to support me or bail me out so I use that as a spring board to succeed. So I'm not sure how to approach a bank for a loan? I guess all of what you said is relevant. Maybe I am the one who should be asking you!!!

@@SwarezArt I think the artist has to find and educate the customer to a point that they would buy ones art works.

A piece of Art is Art only because it has the artist's statement behind it. If your "statement" is getting distorted or being dictated in any way by commercial pressures, then you are in a sense collaborating with your audience. When that happens, you are no longer an artist-- you have become an entertainer, or perhaps in light of this video, an Interior Decorator. When Art is made by more than one person, it becomes, with few exceptions, Entertainment. A film by Fellini or Kubrick can employ many people but still has one person's unique statement behind it. If you want to be a real artist, you have to be prepared to starve. We would not have had Van Gogh, Picasso, Pollack or many others with this money-focused "roof-over-the-head" attitude. That's not Art, it's Commerce.

What about payed advertisment for artist? To get more exposure beyound organic reach. Google, instagram, facebook. Is anyone using it? Does it work for anyone? Any ideas and advice?

Tried all that - put big money into it. Waste of time for me. Not tried KZfaq ads yet but don't think I'll bother. The problem is that you're targeting is still too generalised, no matter how good an algorithm may be. If people who like abstract art in their interests are served one of my posts how do I ever know if they have intent? Seems like a waste of time.

Hello: Your triangle is vary good, but buyers are reluctant to purchase a work of my art, because they may think of what their friends might think of them as making a bad choice or judge them for their poor tests. In other words a lot of buyers want to purchase art objects that their friend would want to have and value. I have had a few people come across my web site and they say they can help me get more people to my web site for a fee of some money,. I'm not sure if they are helping me or themselves more then me. As for having my art on facebook business page is so great, they also say they can generate more viewers to my facebook page. I'm not so sure Facebook business site is a place to market ones art works. I find that friends on Facebook just don't take your art vary series and they just say nice work. Anyway there is a lot to learn. Artist Doug
