If I had to force myself to have 1 addiction in life it would be gaming.
better than doom scrolling, alcohol, weed, Netflix binging because none of those things require focus, skill and knowledge and like playing hard video games do.
We can’t ignore that any addiction is a mechanistic need to escape discomfort.
Which is why just telling people to stop the addiction won’t help - it needs to be replaced with something that will solve that underlying discomfort and provide fulfillment.
The way that game designers take advantage of that is by making the players of their games be as productive as possible, helping them improve bit by bit ,learning skills and by applying almost every hack into a framework you will find in any book about productivity.
this is why being a gamer can be your greatest weakness but if you understand and apply this philosophy of game design it will become your greatest advantage.
