In this this video I demonstrate how to UNlock or "Jailbreak" a Baofeng GT-3WP ham radio so that it can transmit on locked-out frequencies, most notably, GMRS frequencies.
WARNING #1! There does not seem to be a way to UN-do this hack, so don't try it unless you are prepared to live with it.
WARNING #2! - This jailbreak is for NEW LOCKED Baofeng GT-3WP ham HT radios - Who knows what will happen if you try this on another radio.
WARNING #3! - If you do not know what "locked" means, or if you do not know why you need to UNlock your radio, do not try this.
Question: Does this work on a Baofeng UV-9G? -- NO
Question: WHY would you want to unlock your 'locked' ham radio? Because in an emergency it may be necessary to transmit on frequencies outside of the "locked" ham bands to get help, and this is fully permitted by FCC rules in an emergency situation to protect life or property when no other means of communication is available.
Question: Is it legal to 'un-lock' a Baofeng ham radio? - YES.. There are no laws or regulations that prohibit unlocking of any ham radio - just ask any licensed ham operator that has done a "MARS/CAP" modification on their ham radios.
Question: Is it legal to transmit on GMRS using a ham radio? There are no "laws" that prohibit transmitting on GMRS on a ham radio - however FCC Rules specify that to transmit on GMRS you must use a FCC Part 95 "Type Accepted" radio, which the Baofeng GT-3WP is not. The only exception to this would be in an emergency situation as defined by the FCC.

Thanks for sharing this! I ordered a UV-9G for outdoor use and was very excited... until I tried to program local repeaters into it and found out that Baofeng has it locked down like Fort Knox. The "DIY channels" are just awkward to use (and also locked ) so I returned the UV-9G and now I'm waiting on delivery of a GT-3WP that I plan to unlock and program for GMRS.

Thanks for the hot tip, we love info sharing. My 3rd-grade teacher hated sad hams as well so we learned to be good little children. In high school my ham friends and I formed a non-club so that we shared info without blasting each other with snotty comments. We stayed legal, but you can't learned much unless you have a few failures.

I am not a lawyer, but I recall the principle of "desuetude" where by laws that have not been consistently enforced are generally not enforcable or adjudicated against the person or entity that violated such law. Seems to make the airways free.

I'm trying to program this using CHIRP but notice the settings tab (under memories tab on left side of chirp screen) is blank. I cannot adjust any of the settings in the radio using Chirp. Are others seeing this or am I doing something wrong? A big thanks for putting this video out. I'm learning a lot!

Uh oh, the FCC delivering an AnyTone TERMinator-style smackdown to the GT3WP in 3...2... ;) Some history for those that don't remember: AnyTone had a series of radios (by an offshoot of the BTECH company) that had a similar power-on key combination to convert from MURS to GMRS (and I think to HAM on another model), and the FCC spanked them hard and they never came to market. Apparently having such a user-accessible radio band modification like this is a "no no," so it will be interesting to see how long it lasts. It sure is more convenient than having to reprogram with special unlock software (like the Wouxun radios). Fun stuff! :)

Has there ever been a fix found for the No Transmit problem on the Baofeng GMRS-9R short of just sending it back to the seller ? Love the radios and hate to send them back . It receives just fine on Channel 15 , it just will not transmit ! You would never guess what channel our local repeater is on ........................How did you know ? Thanks for any help ! Love watching your show and as I said once before you really missed your calling , you should have been a comedian !

So what happens if you reset your radio to factory settings? Also, where are you getting your radios? None of my radios (and I have many) fail to transmit on GMRS frequencies. Oh, wait, one Tidradio UV5R 8W I bought did fail to transmit on GMRS frequencies, but I did that unlocking thing you recommended and it worked fine. But no other radio I've bought had that problem. And here's the thing. That radio, I subsequently learned, had a card that came with it showing how to unlock it. So how can they placate the FCC if they send you a locked radio, but then send you a card telling you how to unlock it?

This is a great tip. I own two UV-9G's, and I wish I could unlock those for use outside GMRS (in emergency cases). Oh well. However, with this modification, wouldn't you then want to switch to a GMRS-tuned antenna for use with the unlocked GT-3WP? Just curious.

Yes - you always want to use an antenna tuned for whatever frequency you will be transmitting on.

Late to the party! I recently purchased this radio with the intention of monitoring radio transmissions (NOT to transmit) However there are only two frequencies programmed on the radio. The manual does NOT include instructions on how to add and save additional channels or frequencies. Can someone point me to where I can obtain this information? Randomly pushing buttons isn't something I'm comfortable with. (Completely new at this) Terry

That radio is just like the Baofeng UV-9G but with the GMRS channels open and the other channels locked. I wonder if it would unlocked them.

I have the UV-9R version (ham dual band) that looks nearly identical. It shipped unlocked about a year ago. I really like its capabilities and will be buying more and suspect they might start coming locked. I bet this same technique will work on the 9R if they start locking them.

What I want to know is...who the hell "accidentally" discovers things like this? It's like hey, if you hold the PTT switch and the down button, and hit the # button 3 times then turn the radio on and push the numbers 456789 2 times, it unlocks it. How is that something someone just finds out?

This is the way to reset another boofwang so a lot of people tests these out across the radios as only the body is really changing on most of them.

Agreed. The Yaesu FT-65 has a code as well...press and hold a couple buttons while powering on, then entering a code, then pressing another button, it resets the radio and changes the display layout. Who tf figures that stuff out?? Where do they learn it?
