I believe this apply s to early Dakota's as well I know the 90 I had was using Dana 34's and used this system for the front,. I think they where using Jeep Cherokee drive lines in them. Those trucks where designed when Dodge would reuse as much as possible on there vehicles. The 3.9 V6 was a 318 missing 2 cylinders. So is used most of the moving parts from a 318.
@bungcheese59016 жыл бұрын
Robert Peeler unkillable. My ex girlfriends mom had a mint 87 3.9 not only that but it was a breeze to work on, but to be honest I think it was missing two cylinders from a v6 because that thing was GUTLESS only downside.

So what do you do when your housing doesn't have the right machining to properly take a seal at the diff, so when you put a new, one-piece shaft in it that doesn't have the machined, bulged surface for the CAD's seal, it won't hold fluid in the diff? I've got an axle now that I have to add a quart of fluid to once every other week after doing this conversion.
@govannydavalos76435 жыл бұрын
What axle and truck did you do this on?
@joelschermerhorn54475 жыл бұрын
My axle leaks out the passenger side and I have CAD, and supposedly the seal was replaced. When you do the solid axle shaft swap, you're increasing the axle shaft size and (hopefully) replacing the seals in the differential with the correct size, and supporting the axle shaft when it goes in to avoid damaging the seal upon shaft installation. If not done properly or carefully, the seal will leak. Also, if you have a good gasket around the CAD, it won't leak.

Just wondering... In theory could this system be used to unlock a front wheel, while in 4x4, for 3 wheel drive? with a front auto locker? (if you need to know why I ask, because I have heard of people unlocking a single front hub? to get a bit extra grip when using a front NON-selectable locker, in conditions when you don't want the front diff locked- like snow/tight turns) I don't have the system in my Jeep, but I don't like the front Aussie auto locker, and am probably getting a trutrac, but I still wonder.

Curious about this as well.
@cb-gz1vl Жыл бұрын
@@edwardh1003 Actually its due to the differential. The differential supplies power to the wheel with the most slip. So if the passenger side disengages the differential supplies all the power to that side which does nothing and no power to the driver side.

The driveshaft spins anyway because the short side is always connected to the wheel
@BainBoyd6 жыл бұрын
that would only be true if there was less resistance on the drive shaft turning inside the transfer case, than that disconnected long side inner shaft, which there would never be. I have an axle sitting in my garage waiting on the matching one to build, so I'm almost 100% sure of this.
@riflemanjim6 жыл бұрын
BainBoyd huh? There's no way the driveshaft doesnt spin,thats the a fee companies offer free spin hubs conversations.
@johnterpack39404 жыл бұрын
@@riflemanjim If it's an open diff the driveshaft won't necessarily spin. The torque from that tire will follow the path of least resistance... which is almost certainly the disconnected axle shaft rather than the driveshaft.,
@riflemanjim4 жыл бұрын
@@johnterpack3940 the driveshaft is always connected to the axle in the dodge trucks,thats why the shaft has that coupling to disconnect the one assembly from the rest or you'd be in 4 wherl all the time. Without a way to disconnect the wheel from the hub ie locking hubs it always spins which in turn spins the driveshaft.
@johnterpack39404 жыл бұрын
@@riflemanjim The axle is not directly connected to the driveshaft, it is connected through the spider gears in the differential. With the CAD disconnected and an open diff, those spider gears can spin the disconnected axle freely and send no torque at all to the driveshaft. You could disengage the CAD, weld the driveshaft to a bracket to stop it spinning, and still safely drive down the road. Even with the CAD engaged you aren't in 4wd unless the transfer case is also engaged.

This is also the same axle setup in the 4wd Chevy S-10. That sliding gear idea is junk. But, be warned. This is like driving in 4 HI all the time, and will bind the front wheels during turning. Off Road Use ONLY.
@406Steven6 жыл бұрын
The front differential will compensate for that. The front axles on my Ranger are always engaged (always spinning the front drive shaft and output shaft of the tcase) and it doesn't bind up at all making very sharp turns. It has a tighter turning radius than some cars I've owned but no binding issues. When you put it into 4wd you have to drive it as such because then it will bind up but otherwise the differential and the disconnected front drive of the tcase takes care of it. These automatic systems like CAD and automatic hubs are so unreliable that Ford finally threw the whole thing in the garbage in 2002 (if memory serves) on the Rangers and figured people would just have to live with the extra drag of the front axle.
@johnterpack39404 жыл бұрын
It will only bind if the transfer case is in 4wd, not 2wd. In 2wd there's no mechanical connection between front and rear axles, no binding is possible.

vburke1 it's actually kind of cool for light duty stuff. I have a yj Wrangler with this. I just bought the manual cable posi-lock he was talking about a couple weeks ago. With that you can weld the diff solid and have a locked front axle but still be able to unlock it for street driving. So a really cheap and easy manual locker without having to spend a bunch of money replacing the diff.
@vburke16 жыл бұрын
It looks weak and it only unlocks one side so the other side is still turning the diff.
@kshepthedrummer6 жыл бұрын
vburke1 yea that's why I said light duty. These axles are known to be frigile anyways. Power upgrades, big tires, and harder off-roading will hurt them no matter what. But for trail riding, mudding, and getting unstuck from a snowy ditch (open diff is useless there, ask me how I know lol) it's great to have a locked diff. And the driver side axle shaft is solid so the diff spins regardless.
