I rebuilt clutches a few times decades ago. First was with an engine rebuild I did when I was 8 or 9 years old. Next one was at 13 years old. They were so easy back then on Honda 90 motorcycles. Then at about 14-15 I rebuilt a clutch for a neighbor who had an old BSA cycle. I have never done a clutch plate/spacer replacement since. I see they over complicated it as engineers seem to enjoy doing. I just bought a 2007 FJR1300 and watching your videos I realize I have a lot of work to do on my beast as I bought it with 39,521 miles on it 3 weeks ago. Thank You for educating this old man on what I need to do.

I bought a used 2013 FJR and found your channel, and I’m glad I did. Your how-to videos are very well done and extremely helpful and informative. I love your down to earth approach, and the inclusion of things to watch out for that a shade-tree amateur really benefits from. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

Haha, feel ya!;)) whenever I have a courtesy bike from the garage, it feels like I want to squeeze the clutch lever into the handlebar...;)) I commute around Rotterdam, so 8 miles of traffic is a weekly thing for me, and after almost 3 years on a 2009 and 2013 FJR, I don't feel it anymore. When I'm filtering for 1 hour+ continuously, then I wish I could stop. I think the worst was about 2 hours of filtering from Charleroi Airport, Brussels, Belgium, back to Rotterdam. The highway lanes are a lot narrower here than in the US. It feels like after watching all those biker videos. Thanks for bringing up the subject!

I have just completed this little project on my '08. Here are a few tips and tricks and how it turned out for me; 1. Be careful making up your parts list. Compare the fiche carefully. An '08 is slightly different to a '14. I bought some parts I did not need and had to go back for a few more. They are all special order so cannot be returned. 2. You can actually buy a proper clutch basket holding tool for just £7.50 on eBay. Or even make one from 2 pieces of steel hinged in the centre using a bolt with each end cracked at 90 degrees. I bought one but still had to modify it by bending the handle outwards in order to clear the engine case. 3. Best to squeeze bearings in using a vice, not a hammer. I wrecked my first set using the hammer technique. When I first fired up, I found it difficult to find neutral. I guess the plates were still a bit sticky but that eased following a few miles on the road. So a groan turned into a smile. Of course it still 'clonks' heavy into first but that's just what FJRs do. The clutch pull certainly feels lighter than before. I measured around 7kg before and about 5.5kg now. I can't be exact because it is not a linear progression. I think there is also a slighter shorter pull so I was able to move the lever adjuster. The slipper makes downshifts so much smoother which is rather nice. Even if you go for it way too early, there is non of the harsh jolt of before. So it's a nice mod and I'm pleased with it.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 7 жыл бұрын
1 - Sorry but looking at the microfiche, the only difference is the '08 doesn't use the retaining ring. You may have simply misread. 2. Just hold the rear brake. No tool actually needed. I found that out post install of course! Hammering bearings in is no problem - it's the user, not the tool ;)
@Mark333032
@Mark333032 7 жыл бұрын
Not quite. On an ’08 the ‘Plate, Seat’ and ‘Spring, Clutch Boss’ are prefixed 3P6 so I needed to replace them with the correct 36Y prefixed parts and also the retainer ‘Ring Set’. Also I mistakenly ordered a new set of ‘Plate, Clutch 2’ parts 2H7-16325-00 (6 of them). I did not need to as I could have used the old ones. So just a word of warning to others to be careful because it’s easy to mess up. And a dope slap for me!
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 7 жыл бұрын
Did you try fitting the old plate and spring?
@Mark333032
@Mark333032 7 жыл бұрын
No. I took the new prefix to mean they were different parts. I read somewhere the prefix refers to a code for the bike in which the part was first used. In this case 3P6 v 36Y.

Update 75k miles, plates are worn and burnt so doing clutch work today bought new OEM plates and found that item #8 Partszilla RING SET 2H7-16385-00-00, shown at 24:00 on your video, had been destroyed and pieces are all in the clutch housing, so now buying the clip and additional plates behind it, cleaning everything up and going with new oil since I can't trust that that paper clip of a ring set is not anywhere else in my oil. Wish me luck.

Nice video, & good explanations. I own a 2012 FJR that I bought new & for my style of riding, I prefer the standard clutch. When I hit the twisties (we have an abundance of them here in BC Canada) I gear down as I come into some tight stuff rather than apply the brakes. A quick "blip" of the throttle when between gears does ,much the same as a slipper clutch. Maybe when I get old I'll move to a bike with a slipper clutch, but for now, even in stop & go traffic the resistance on my clutch isn't a problem. Thanks for the demonstration, well done!

Excellent clutch change, I saw the complete video and the recommendations not to lose the steel ball, and how to remove the basket from the clutch, very well explained, I am sure that the steel ball came out and fell on the rags, my fjr is A mod 07 I do not know if the clutch system is the same, I also saw that the lock of the nut slides when putting the nut, I would put a little grease so that it would stick and thus put the nut, I would like you to support me with a tutorial to change the oil pump chain is noisy, i think i saw you in a video with charly sinewan on the mountain i think from colorado, they camped, it was a rainy day, if it was you?

Great videos! I have pretty big hands so I don't have any issue with the clutch pull weight, even though I am a two finger guy. However, if I did this but put back in the original springs, so I kept the manual clutch lever pull the same but with the additional engine assist, do you think I could use just about any synthetic automotive engine oil I wanted without worrying about clutch slip?

Awesome job making this detailed vid Bryan, thank you. My '07 FJR is about to hit 300,000 miles, (around 200k miles on the original) and with around 100k now on a low-mileage replacement engine. I figure this upgrade should be a welcome improvement. I was wondering if you happen to know how this upgrade works with the Gen 1 clutch slave cylinder, since that's a mod I've already got on my Gen 2 to help ease the clutch pull a bit. It is my understanding that Gen 2.5, 3 and up FJRs already run the Gen 1 clutch slave cylinder right?

Thanks for the confirmation. The bike has been "down" the last couple of days while I was changing the generator cover, oil change, exhaust swap, and switching out the HIDs for LEDs. I can't afford another downtime right now but I'll definitely keep this upgrade in mind and may get to in next month.

Wait, I thought you said in one of your earlier videos that if they did change the clutch that you weren't going to upgrade? Lol

Your right. I watched a bunch of videos yesterday and it was not you. Got you confused with Science_biker doing a review of his. After a while it all bleeds into one long video. Lol

Has anyone had success with the slipper clutch on a 1st Gen FJR? I’m rebuilding my clutch this winter and am considering this modification if someone can confirm it fits with the 1st gen.

Did you ever find out if this mod can be made for a GEN I bike? I have a 2004 that needs clutch work and I'd really like to retrofit it with the slipper clutch.
