Looks cool, but it's a little pricey without knowing how much this improves signal strength. Considering this remote is $300, then add the cost of this antenna @ $577. For another $200, you could just get the pro version and not have to risk damaging your controller.

It is true that the cost of the antenna and remote combined can be significant, and it may be more cost-effective to simply purchase a higher-end drone with better signal strength. However, it is also important to consider the specific use case and the potential benefits of improved signal strength in certain situations. Additionally, purchasing the antenna and remote separately may be a more cost-effective option for those who already own a drone but are looking to improve its signal strength. Ultimately, the decision will depend on the individual's specific needs and budget.

"For another $200, you could just get the pro version and not have to risk damaging your controller." Fixed: For another $1000 you can purchase a pro controller and THEN add a range extender! Some documents show this patch antenna having 15 db gain. Each 6 db will approximately double the range so you MIGHT get 4x the range but only in the case of no interference from other sources.

Regardless of the cost and the size of the antenna, the important point is how much control distance has been increased?

Whats the point? Stock remote can already reach out further than the battery can go however while this antenna isnt needed the install kit here can be very useful. Im my case i installed 2.4ghz omnidirectional antennas onto the roof of my house and ran 50 ft of low loss LMR 400 down to my man cave . Then hdmi out to my 65 inch tv. And with all this i still have more range then battery. Its great for a more portable version with antennas with magnetic mounts for your car!

All due respect, thank you for showing how to do the modification. BUT, what good is showing how to do the modification, then NOT taking it out for a range test? Telling us what is capable of, is NOT the same thing as SHOWING us REAL proof. This setup is $599.00. I don't have a problem with the cost, IF it does what it says. What should have been done, was before the modification, do a test flight with the stock DJI RC controller. Max it out, to where the screen goes black, and see what the distance was. Bring it back in for a landing. Go, and do the modifications, with the new antenna setup. Then go back to the same exact spot you flew from, flying the EXACT same pattern as with the stock controller, and SEE the difference. Why is this so hard? Who the heck wants to throw down $599.00, for something they are TOLD, but NOT SHOWN to work?
@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 Жыл бұрын
"Why is this so hard?" Because it is probably illegal. That is to say, it would definitely be illegal in the United States anyway unless you have a BVLOS waiver from FAA. As it happens, a directional antenna is sometimes useful even when you can see the drone if there's interference nearby. Anyway, someone else on KZfaq is sure to be using one of these and does not mind putting themselves on report.

Oh, and one other thing; you are supposed to reduce your transmitter power if you have a high gain antenna. I wonder if anyone does that?

I understand your concern. It is always best to see a product in action before making a purchase. Many manufacturers and sellers of this type of antenna may have demonstration videos of the product in use, which can help to give a better idea of the potential benefits and performance of the antenna. Additionally, many online retailers have a customer reviews section where you can read feedback from other customers who have purchased and used the product. It may also be helpful to reach out to the manufacturer or seller directly and ask if they have any demonstration videos or flight tests available.

I followed your video instructions and installed the antenna upgrade. It worked out VERY good! The external antenna more than doubled my range! Even though I can see the the effects of a stronger signal, the measured distance shown on my DJI RC transmitter is not accurate - it's shorter than it should be. There seems to be the need for some sort of calibration to display an accurate distance with the new external antenna installation. Am I correct?

PLEASE! Answer me, is there any difference between antennas ports? There is two antennas, for 2.4G and 5.8G, on my remote controller. Is there any difference where to connect them, on ALIENTECH DUO II 2.4G/5.8G ??? There is nothing in users manual, about that. Tech support didn't answer on that crucial question.

Normally a 2.4ghz antenna will not only work on 5.8ghz but has increased gain because it's a multiple of 2.4. Which is the case with all antenna most of the time. For example. A 1.2ghz antenna will work on 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz. With increased gain on 2.4ghz and even more gain on 5.8ghz. But the SWR needs to be verified before use. Especially when increasing the freq by more than 2x. Sometimes what is labeled as say 1.2ghz turns out to be tuned for 1240 - 1300 mhz. So at x2 can throw its center freq outside the 2.4ghz band. 2.4ghz ISM Band actually covers 2400 - 2483.5 mhz. 5.8ghz ISM Band covers from 5725 - 5875 mhz. In the USA and varies some by country. Look up ISM Bands. The connectors are QMA which is a Quick SMA connector.

@@WW5RM THANK YOU ! If I had known about the world of drones, I would have absolutely purchased gear with a wider frequency range. I mostly dealt with the public safety sector and spent a fortune on test equipment, not realizing that it would have only been a small increase in cost to go to 6+ GHz. My first spectrum analyzer was an Agilent 9340 series (portable SA) which had an upper limit of 3GHz. It definitely paid for itself once I was able to tune duplexers, filters, etc.. but for only an extra $2k or so, I could have gone up to 6GHz. I eventually bought a Rigol “Chinesium” SA (it’s actually a nice little piece of test gear) for the bench and made a similar error in model selection. It was actually not worth the upgrade with this one. (approx $1400 for 1.5GHz // approx $6k for the 7.5GHz) I lost much interest in the radio realm after some major health issues. (stroke & ankylosing spondylitis) and my incredible Wife bought me a Mavic-2 Pro after watching a few Ken Heron videos. It changed my life and I was able to incorporate that new skill set into the public safety world.

My big dilemma now = I have a Mavic-3 (original model) / RC-Pro controller / RC-Plus (modified by the seller to run DJI’s Fly app). I live in an area completely surrounded by mountains and massive trees. Flight from my backyard is possible IF my controller + drone signaling was better. (VLOS, of course). I purchased an Alientech Duo-2 (combo directional antenna w/bi-directional amp in a compact package) and the install kit for the RC-Pro, but wasn’t up to doing the install, so eventually located the RC-Plus with external antenna connections. Alientech makes a great little adapter “bar” kit that permits you to easily remove the RC-Plus antennas and this “bar” screws into the (proprietary?) connectors on the controller and provides 2 QMA connectors for attaching the Duo-2 directly to the controller. Alternatively, I made up a wiring harness for remotely mounting the unit. 10’ (x2) of RG-400 with SMA male connectors. I then used “pricey but cheap quality” adapters to QMA (2x male / 2x female) to permit remote mounting using an old/spare carbon fiber tripod. I eventually purchased the “Alientech OEM” wiring harness with better quality connectors and no “adapters”. It honestly did not work nearly as well as I had hoped, but I have a horrible environment, especially when the trees/leaves are wet. I ended up buying the newly released DUO-3, but haven’t had much better success. The problem? The equipment is actually very well designed and constructed, but in my case - The antenna is STILL located too low, beneath the trees. I have a tower located on my property and have a few spare 7/8” Heliax cables, CAT-6 STP cables and a few spare 2” PVC schedule 40 conduit runs from the house to the tower and have a ton of space in a small “shed” at the base of the tower. (AC utility power and mini-split cooling also exist for the repeaters I have in the “shed”). Any ideas on mounting an omnidirectional antenna on the tower with a powerful bidirectional amp in the “shed” (80’ tower) and have some sort of “repeater” connection from the handheld RC to the ‘shed”? The overall length from the house to “shed” (150+ feet plus 80’ from “shed” to tower top) would be way too long for the freq range being used…. I had purchased a pair of DJI’s “LTE Dongles” when the Mavic 3 was first released, thinking it would be ideal solution. BUT… no go in North America. I was able to get the RC-Pro functional, but just for firmware updates, etc…. I’d l

@@PowderMill interesting! I've seen those RC Plus on eBay but was to much of a risk for me. I normally stay away from 5.8ghz due to its reduced range. Normally the higher you go in freq the Ground Wave propagation is reduced (excluding interference). The difference between 2.4 and 5.8ghz is almost double. Like you we have trees EVERYWHERE here. Some close to 100 feet tall. I barely have enough room to squeeze my drone between the trees to launch! I own 3 acres. It's basically two places I can squeeze through. Everywhere else it's a closed canopy! Normally I manually choose 2.4ghz in the Band settings. But I've noticed DJI FLY does an awesome job at which band to use. Occasionally I see a weak signal warning but I think it's switching to 5.8ghz, detecting even worse signal and Immediately switching back. Pretty sure if I would go back to manually selecting 2.4ghz I wouldn't even get the weak signal warning. But it's only for a second at the most. My general rule of thumb for even 2.4ghz is to not run more than 50 feet of coax / feed line. Mainly due to using smaller LMR240. But with 7/8" Heliax I'd have to look at the numbers (loss at 2.4ghz and antenna gain). You might get away with a long run but if it's borderline then you wasted time, effort, cost of antenna and not really gained anything. That's assuming you already have the 7/8 Heliax. If i had to buy feed line / coax then no, its worth it to me. Interesting you mentioned "wet trees". I see that too! Significant decrease in signal after a rain! Ah these wonderful trees! =] Honestly if you could get on a hill or mountain to launch that would be the easiest way to increase range. You either elevate the drone or if possible elevate the controller. I'm pretty sure a Repeater is out of the question. I've not seen any way to do it with DJI. Although they do have a Relay device for the Agri drones. I'm sure it's possible it's just the fact it most likely requires some added feature to the app for it to work and I've not seen anyone who is able to make it work. A Repeater for UHF normally has a 5 mhz off set in freq (input and output) adding that to the equation means the drone would need to run a separate freq / channel than the controller. Pretty sure to do that the app needs a option or feature to allow it. Plus stop it from channel surfing and band switching of course.
