This episode is all about how to use a basic tire changer to install or remove tires from rims. There are lots of little tips to help you become a rock star at changing tires and without damaging tires/rims. There is also lots of tips on how to get stubborn tires to seal against the rim. I also explain how to position tires during removal/installation for wheels that have TPMS sensors which can be broken quite easily. This info is crucial to understanding more about tires on any vehicle. This is the third video in a new series of videos coming out so you can be an expert on everything tires! This is another episode of a brand new series on how to become a GEARHEAD! Very informative, well done. Love the tips on sealing stubborn tires, hate when that happens. I'd just like to add that besides safety glasses I also use safety earmuffs to protect my ears. Some tires pop louder than others when you inflate them, and I've had my ears ringing a few times so I always wear them now.

Great video! I have a manual machine (w/ duck head, Red Line Stands) for motorcycle tires and sometimes I pinch off some of the rubber tire edge YUCK, but I think you just showed me something useful I am going to try, it's all in the details. Thanks.

Excellent video. FWIW, the ratchet strap technique is about the only thing you can do to seat smaller tires like a zero turn mower/garden tractor, wheel barrow or a dolly etc that dont use a tube. Of course these are the type of tires you normally change manually on the ground w bars vs on a machine.

I always had trouble with seating the bead on new truck tires . I tried all those methods but 10 ply tires just don't flex well. Then I bought a bead bazooka. It changed everything. It works the first time, every time. A little pricey but well worth it. You'll never worry about seating a bead ever again!

Thanks John! It depends as every tire/rim is different. Most times you don't need anything and sometimes almost nothing works. I do have a large wide ratchet strap for these when they are stubborn. I rarely use anything except my bead seater, that usually do the trick. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel.

A note: if you use a nylon “soft” duck head on your tire machine, you might feel compelled to not set a gap. That soft coating can wear off and expose some sharp parts that will scratch the face of the rim. Ask me how I know lol. Set the gap even for nylon soft heads.

I was trained to handle TPMS on mounting a bit differently. Put the TPMS sensor on the other side away from the duck, and push down on the tire by hand and let the machine do the work without a prybar. This keeps the TPMS sensor from being squashed by the tire, and IMO makes installation easier for most tires. Haven’t broken while mounting yet. (Tbh, I always have trouble with pry bars slipping.)

Yeah I guess to each their own. If it works, keep going the way you were trained but I teach my students my method using a prybar because many of them don't have the strength to keep the tire down into the drop center and they can also keep their fingers away from the rim so they don't get pinched. The tire iron can be kept in position if you lightly push towards the center of the rim as you hold it down parallel to the floor. As for the tpms location I know my locations work without issues but I am sure there is some room for error but there are some locations that will definitely break a sensor. Excellent video! Thanks very much, for the refresher. I have to ask, though… why no mention of cleaning the beads? (I’ve watched 3 other people’s videos, and nobody mentions it). I’ve been caught with a dirty bead install, and the annoying slow leak. Not to mention potential for corrosion on aluminum rim beads. (Our salty Canadian roads will see to that) With the bare rim clamped, it’s the perfect time to wipe/brush/wash those beads clean, to ensure the best possible airtight seal. . Maybe not worth a video/edit?… but, a warning on dealing with a dreaded ‘fix-a-flat’ tire (propellant) might be valuable? More on ‘seal’… with the worst of the battered/rusty rims… how about bead glue? . Thanks again for your great content! I’m sure your students love your class.

You've got some great ideas and it will be a future video. Usually rims don't leak from being dirty, it's usually because of paint flaking or wheel corrosion. When a wheel leaks, you can try to seal with bead sealer (kinda like a tacky gooey sealant). However, if this doesn't work, you can carefully sand the surface to smooth the surface so it seals. I have to go this every now and then. Sounds like a great video. Thanks for the watch and suggestion. Cheers!

Wow. Another Awesome Video. I had a hell of a time trying to make a tire inflate. The one i took off was 215/65/R18 and the one I was trying to replace with was 215/70/R18. I hurt my back trying to get that done. Ended up telling buddy to take to a different place. But had i known those tricks you showed. Maybe it may have been possible. I Need to see more of your videos it seems. I really enjoy the way you teach. Lots of detail. Thank you again. 1 question I do have though...Does the fact that the middle number was different make that big of a difference?? (65/70?)

The middle number (the aspect ratio) wont matter that much in this case. Both are bigger aspect ratios. Yeah the tricks in this video probably would have helped. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

What kind of lubricant will i use on tyre when I want to remove it from the wheel

Is it much more difficult to change a tire at a low temperature? I completed my 1st tire and ready for the 2nd one, but the temperature here dropped. I saw in one film how they heated the tire w/heat gun, but how much, where exactly, all that is kind of vauge. Also in that film they were working on tractor tires, I have just regular passenger car (R16 tires). My HF is mounted outside, while it is snowing I won't do anything, but tomorrow it will be clear. So I decided to do a small research on the subject meanwhile. At what temperature you can change tire more or less comfortably, can you do it @50F, or it is too low. My main concern is that I can tear the tire or burn it w/heater gun. Thank you for a great (as usually) film.

That's a good question. While it might make changing a tire slightly easier, I don't think you need to or want to. Summer tires will be harder at sub 7 degrees C and Winter tires should be fine at anytime. I would think that if you have regular passenger tires, you will be fine without heating the tire. If you have stacking issues like 15 year old, low profile, and Summer tires that are being changed in minus 45 degrees C then you might have a hard time. I personally have never used heat on tires but maybe some people do in very specific conditions/applications. Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench Thank you. I think I opened a new part of knowledge about tires related to different temperatures. I'm working w/All Season tires. I was thinking to apply a bit of heat, but I'll never do now, bcs one lady wrote me that if overheat, it might change the structure and the tire is not safe anymore. The film I saw was about tractor tires, they are more thick, so they heated them. I'm sorry I didn't explain well my project. I bought new tires fm/Tire Rack (All Seasons) and installing them on Chevy 2003 using Bead Buster XB-452, HF Tire Machine, and Duck Bill attachment. I worry about putting back the new tire, how not to tear it, since the rubber will be more dense. Probably I'll just try slightly, and if it will be very hard better wait till the next week w/expected 60F (we are in Dallas, TX). Special thanks for letting me know that on snow tires all that doesn't matter and noting on 7C limit for Summer tires. Though I bought All Seasons tires, it can be temperature effect on installation I guess. Thank you again.

with bigger tires, they like to hang down cause their heavy which makes it hard to remove the tire. If you lift the other side while trying to lever the other side's lip over the duckhead, it will make it easier. When installing, make sure you lubed the tire and press the tire down into the drop center as it goes on. I use the tire iron to ensure the tire is in the drop center. Low profiles are a whole other story, we only do 55 aspect ratio or bigger but we have a new machine coming. Hope that helps!

I don't know if they still make/sell the exact model tire changer but you can still get something similiar to this from Ranger. While you're at it, maybe look at getting a slightly better model for doing low profiles. Thanks for the watch!
