Richard Mann, host of Gunsite Academy NOW!, and Gunsite Academy Instructor Mario Marchman discuss and demonstrate how to properly run a bolt action rifle. If you’re basing your technique on what you’ve learned watching hunting shows - you may be in for a surprise. Filmed on location at Gunsite Academy with Panteao Productions.

I'm just getting used to shooting the K98K. It's my first bolt action rifle and it's actually tougher to use than I had anticipated. The rifle itself is heavy and it wears out your arm holding it up for long periods of time. The bolt is really tight too so you need to come in strong and swift with your movements. I personally find that open hand works much better for me firing from the shoulder, after trying both out and working on just cycling the gun over and over again as quickly as possible without unshouldering it. When I first started using it, cycling the action felt like 4 distinct movements, now it feels like I'm slapping it open and closed in two motions. It's not quit as fast as and Enfield but the fluidity is there, which is something I think you need to develop in your muscle memory for every rifle.

@@Mustafa-dm5co lol, kar98ks from all eras are so abundant where i live, a well maintained ready to shoot one starts from 700€, but people tend to pay more if its stamped from their favourite manufacturing site, but still rarely more than 1000€. I’m thinking of getting one, but the ammo is expensive, i’m leaning more towards a modern rifle in 223

I have ar10 and Bolt action,both in 308. I cannot tell you how fun is shooting the ar10 but is very expensive and is mostly for fun. The Bolt action in other hand you can take a 20 box ammo and spend half hour or more time enjoying shooting those long range shots from 50 yards up to where ever ur range has. It outs you in a different mode as you focus a single shot to be deliver in the bulls eyes as for the ar15 or ar10 u just wanna shoot like rambo

I think you learn how to shoot better. You learn to focus more on aiming and making the first shot count.

Whatd ya end up doing about it? I always love asking people about progress from a comment made a while back, just to see, y'know? Guns are obviously something we're all interested in, but more specifically bolt action rifles are another subcategory entirely.

How important is it to have a left handed rifle when shooting left handed? Looking at this video, it seems essential. Would it be wrong to use your foreword grip hand to cycle the action when shooting a right handed rifle with your left hand?

Questions : After all ammo is fired, and the gun is emptied, the gun is still in cock, how to remove/relieve that position? Is dry fired every time the answer? How does dry fire effects the gun in the long run?
@Dr4gon2000
@Dr4gon2000 3 жыл бұрын
Dry fire is fine given that it is a centerfire rifle. Dry firing on a rimfire can eventually wear out the chamber from the firing pin hitting the wall so many times. Now, if it is a very old rifle, sometimes it might be best not to dryfire it, but that is pretty rare regardless. Even old milsurps (k98s, 1903, krags, etc) will be fine with dry fire.

You can also leave the bolt in the upstroke then hold the trigger while you move the bolt down which will disengage the firing pin , just make for sure she’s unloaded first

What would cause a round to go off when your chambering a round in? Remington Model 7 .243 The gun was shot, round chambered out, and went off when the bolt was slid forward. Scary stuff.

Probably never going to have a gun, bc Germany and also because I dont earn much money(16 yrs old) but when the apocalypse comes I know how to operate one. I did already know how to operate a bolt action but I just forgot if you really need to pull the bolt all the way for just chambering the next round.

bolt guns are worse in every way but okay its like saying "i take a revolver over any semi auto pistol"
@sovietunion4484
@sovietunion4484 2 жыл бұрын
@@pavelmorozov6599 Bolt actions are lighter, cheaper, slightly more accurate, this is because when the bullet is moving out of the barrel there are no moving parts. And they don’t jam as much as semi automatic rifles. Semi automatic rifles generally have less recoil due to the action, have higher capacity, and customization. Easier to use.
@sovietunion4484
@sovietunion4484 2 жыл бұрын
@@pavelmorozov6599 however a revolver does suck in almost every way, besides having less jams they are harder to use due to its small capacity, and slow reload, and double action trigger. While a semi automatic have faster reloads, more capacity, and generally have easier triggers. An easy to use trigger=more accuracy.
@andrewb2111

@@pavelmorozov6599 Depends on the intended use and the scenario. Put in the proper hands, a bolt gun has been known to decimate entire platoons. For hunting, if you need semi-auto, there's an issue. I have some because I want them, but I definitely don't need them ... for hunting. For a battle purpose rifle, I suggest you read the book White Feather. It might change your outlook on old school tech. I can think of one instance where I'd prefer the AR platform ... urban combat where I'm forced into battle under the orders of someone else. Left on my own, I'll take the bolt rifle in 30-06 any day of the week.
